Keynote speaker for the two days of Bible empha sis will be Dr. Eugene Carson Biake. president of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America. He will speak Wednes day, Oct. 23, at 7:30 p.m. in the First Presbyterian church. The program will include workshops, mass meetings, ra dio and television programs and meetings of laymen and minis ters. Speakers here for the pro gram will include Dr. Gerald A. Larue, National Council of Churches of Oregon, Dr. J. Quartet To Hold Nightly Meetings At Friends Church The Four Flats quartet, Los Angeles, now known as the Vis- ionaires, will open a one-week engagement at the Friends church Sunday, singing for the opening assemblies at 9:45 and 11 a.m. and speaking and sing ing for the worship hours at 9:43 and 11 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. They will sing and speak at 7:30 p.m. each evening of the follow ing week, Oct. 13 to 20, the meetings being sponsored by the Senior Christian Endeavor of the church. The quartet has sung in six nations in the Far East, in Alas ka and Canada,, as well as from coast to coast in the United States. They have appeared in several of the campaigns of Evangelist Billy Graham, includ ing the recent Madison Square Garden series in New York City. They have sung in Medford sev eral times under the auspices of World Vision, Inc., a mission ary organization. The public is invited to the meetings. At 1 p.m. Sunday the church will celebrate its 15th annivers ary with a fellowship dinner in the social hall, followed by a program of reminiscences. Guest musicians will be the Four Flats quartet. The Senior and Intermediate C. E. societies will hold con secration and pledge signing services at 6:30 p.m. "Quaker Hour" will be broadcast "live" from station KMED at 9:30 p.m., featuring the Four Flats quartet. Stewardship Program Starts Second Week The second week of a steward ship campaign at the First Bap tist church will be centered on visitation. On Sunday morning, the Rev. James Neely will speak on the theme, "Lifting our Church to a Greater Ministry By Visitation." On Monday evening, 50 couples will be serv ed dinner at the church and then will go out to reach prospects for the Sunday school and church. s Thursday' the women of the congregation will travel to the Newell Baptist church in Tule lake, Calif., for the Women's Fellowship of the Shasta-Cascade Baptist association. The speakers for the two day meet ing will be the Rev. and Mrs. Fleming Newcomb who are ap pointees to Haiti. Mrs. James Neely will conduct a panel quiz on Conservative Baptist mission aries and mission fields. The ar rangements for the fellowship meeting are in charge of Mrs. Douglas Lamb of Medford who is president of the group. Missionary From Turkey To Speak Here Sunday Miss Harriet Yarrow, Con gregational missionary in Izmir, Turkey, will be guest speaker at the two services at the Congrega tional church Sunday. Her sub jeqt will be "A Christian in the Tensions of the Middle' East." A new membership prepara tion class has begun and will continue to meet Tuesday even ings at 7:30. New enrollment will still be accepted this week. It is the custom in this church to ask all prospective members to attend these classes. Six sessions are held and basic religious questions are discussed. The top ic this week is "Prayer." PHOENIX SERMONS Phoenix The Rev. Perry M. Johnson will preach at the 11 a.m. worship service at First Baptist church, Phoenix, Sun day. His topic will be "Teaching -our Sunday School to Walk." The evening services will start at 7:30 p. m. He will also speak at the 11 a. m. worship services at the church. Presbyterians Tell Sermons Dr. D. Kirkland West will speak on the "Marks of a Mature Christian" at both the 9:45 and 11 a.m. worship services at the First Presbyterian church, Med ford, Sunday. Westminster fejlowship will meet to hear "The Education of Joe Barbour" and Geneva Fel lowship will continue their study in Galatians. They will meet at 1426 Euclid ave. Both groups will meet at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Ashland "Peter's Denial and Ours" will be the sermon topic Sunday at the Ashland First Presbyterian church at 9:45 and 11 a.m. The Rev. B. J. Holland, minister, will preach. Phoenix Dr. Clifford Miller of Southern Oregon college will speak at the 11 a.m. worship service at Phoenix First Presby terian church. Last Sunday was rally day and promotion Sunday at the church in the Sunday school. The meeting of the session is scheduled to be held Monday, Oct. 14. Central Point "The Poor Widow" will be the sermon topic Sunday at the 9:45 a.m. service in the Central Point First Pres byterian church. At 10:50 a.m. church school will be held ' with one class taught by the pastor Dr. N. K. Tully, on "The Beginning of the Gospel." That evening at 7 p.m. the young people will meet at the church for a program with a home fireside afterwards. Program at Eastwood Tells Story of Hymns "On the Wings of Song" will be the theme of the Sunday pro gram at 7:30 p.m. at the East wood Baptist church, North Keene Way dr. at Ridgeway. The stories of great hymns will be teature of the evening. Continuing the series on the "Ten Laws of Life," the pastor, the Rev. Richard M. Jones, will speak at the 11 a.m. worship hour on, "A Matter of Honor." This is the sixth in a series on the Ten Commandments. Eastwood ' Baptist church is located north of Hedrick Junior High school and is affiliated with the American Baptist convention. First Christian Church Teiis Sermon Topics "The Source of Power" will be- the topic for the sermon at the morning worship service of the First Christian church. "Under His Wings" will be sung by the choir. The topic of the sermon for the evening service will be "Christ, the Center of Gods Plan." The youth orchestra will furnish accompaniment for this service. Friday, October 11. 1957 Em SSiS 3-25 will speak at the noon luncheon of Kiwanis club and at 6 p.m. a no host dinner will be held for him at the Rogue Valley Country club. Registration will be held the morning of Oct. 24 at the First Presbyterian church. The following workshops will be conducted at the First Pres byterian church Thursday, Oct. 24. Included are Bible and Re cent Archaeological Finds, Bible Translation in Many Lands, Prophets and Prophecy, Devo tional Use of the Bible, and Bible History, Composition and Content. The workshops are held three times during the day at 10:35- 11:45 a.m.; 1:15-3 p.m.; and 3:30- 5 p.m. Instructors for this group of workshops include Dr. Larue, Mr. Collins, the Rev. Raymond Schaefer, Miss Josephine Lille moe, and the Rev. Robert Neal. Workshops on Friday, Oct. 25, will hold sessions from 10:30- 11:45 a.m.; 1:45-3 p.m.; and 3:30- 5:15 p.m. Topics will include God in the Bible, Group Dy namics in Studying the Bible, Words and Symbols in the Bible, Use of the Bible with Pre school and School Children, Use of the Bible With Young Peo ple, and Use of the Bible With Adults. Dr. Swaim will be added to the list of instructors for the Friday session. Audio-Visual Groups Both days a workshop will be held on audio-visual aids for interested persons taught by James McDonald of the Jack son county schools superintend ent's office. He is president of the student division of the Na tional Education association. Also scheduled during the two days are a ministers break fast at the First Christian church, a men's luncheon at the First Methodist church at which Dr. Swaim will speak, and a banquet with Dr. Larue as speaker at St. Mark's Episcopal church. The second day of the program will start with a break fast for ministers and committee members at the First Christian church with Dr. Larue, and a women's luncheon with Dr. Swaim as speaker at First Methodist church and a men's luncheon with Mr. Collins at the First Presbyterian church. College on Wheels to Be In Central Point Central Point The college on wheels of the San Jose Bible college will conduct Bible clas ses at the Central Point Church of Christ Thursday, Oct. 17 through Oct. 20. Teaching the classes will be Mr. and Mrs. Bill Jessup. Mr. Jessup is president of the col lege. The classes are free to all who wish to attend. Class schedule includes courses in "Building Homes for Christ," "The Importance of Training," "Training to be Bet ter Singers and Song Leaders," and "Training to be Better Leaders." Churches in Ashland, Med ford, Phoenix, Central Point, and Gold Kill will participate in the college. Sunday the Rev. Mr. Jean M. Shelley will preach on "The Price of Pork" at the 10:45 a.m. worship service and "Outwit ting Christ," at the 7:30 p.m. evening service. Proposal to Straighten Highway 97 Presented Yreka A proposal to straigh ten approximately six curves and reduce grades on U. S. Highway 97 was presented to the Siski you county board of supervisiors by California Highway Officials Herb Miles this week. Most of the work would be in a two-mile streach near Cougar, he said. Board Chairman Don Avery was authorized to sign an agree ment with the state for the Mt. Shasta bypass. The agreement provides that existing county roads would be improved as a replacement for the county roads closed off by the freeway. Missionary To Speak At Griffin Creek Hall The Rev. Lee Green, mission ary from Belgian Congo, will speak and show films this even ing, Saturday, and Sunday at the Griffin Creek Union Sunday School. The meetings will be held in the grange hall. Tonight at 7:30 p.m. he will tell of the life with an African girl, leper camp work, and show scense from a Congo leper camp. Saturday at 7:30 p.m. will he tell of a day with an African school boy. The third program will be given at 10 a.m. Sunday. Mr. Green will be assisted in the programs by Mrs. Green who is a registered nurse and taught in the Pedagogy school in Africa. The Greens are with a non denominational mission in Bel gian Congo for three and one half years he was in charge of a training school for African pastors. Pastor to Aflend Centennial Service Central Point Dr. Norman K. Tully, pastor of First Pres byterian church, Central Point, will leave Monday afternoon by plane for Minneapolis, Minn., where he will visit his brother-in-law and his family. From there Dr. Tully will go to Eau Claire, Wise, to particp ate in the centennial observance of the First Presbyterian church. It was from that church 36 years ago that Dr. Tully and his family moved to Portland. Prior to returning to Med ford Oct. 25, Dr. Tully will visit the church in Galesville, Wise, his first church after graduating from seminary. On the return trip he will visit his daughter and son-in-law in Davenport, Wash. Colored Film of Peru To Be Shown in Talent Friends Church Sunday Talent A colored sound mo tion picture taken in Peru by Dr. Louis T. Talbot, then presi dent and now chancellor of the Bible Institute of Los Angeles, will be shown Sunday, at 8 p. m. at Talent Friends church. The importance of missionary avation in reaching such people is displayed, and the work of veteran missionaries who have patiently taught and guided these Indians is seen. Included in the film is a visit to the famed Bird Island, the home of the valuable and unique guano birds. This pic ture is one in a series of round- the world films obtained in re cent missionary surveys made by Dr. Talbot. The picture is presented by the film department of the Bible Institute of Los Angeles. At the 11 a.m. worship serv ice Sunday the Rev. A. Clark Smith pastor, will speak on "Lost and Found." First Baptist Church Sponsors Teen Center' The First Baptisl church of Medford will sponsor a Teen Center following the Medford High football game tonight. The center is open io students and their guests from Medford High school and from Crater High school. A wide variety of games are set up for use by the young people, and free re freshments are provided by women of the church. The purpose of the program is to provide a wholesome after game activity for high school students according io Haddon Robinson, the youth director at the church. All stu dents are invited to attend re gardless of church affiliation. Adventists To Hear Guest Speaker; Special Offering Members of the Rogue Valley's Seventh-day Adventist churches will be asked Saturday to pledge their continued support of the denomination's international ra dio program "Voice of Prophecy" during a brief service honoring the 27-year religious broadcast. Saturday's program will in clude a tape recording of a typi cal broadcast featuring" the con tralto voice of Del Delker, pro gram soloist, and the King's Heralds, Voice of Prophecy male quartet. At the close of the service of fering will be taken to aid in furthering the work of the pro gram. The Voice of Prophecy is heard locally on at 9:30 Sundays a.m. over station KWIN. Pastor Harold Turner of the Grants Pass Senenth-day Adven tist church will be guest speaker in the Medford church at the 11 a.m. worship hour Saturday. His subject will be "Why Go to Church?"" Medford Pathfinders are spon soring a film, "The Unfinished Task," Saturday, Oct. 12 at 7:30 p. m. in the Rogue River Acad emy gymnasium. Proceeds will be used in the completion of the new Pathfinder club house located behind the gymnasium. The public is invited to view the picture and tour the club house. The Pathfinders have been meeting in the new build ing fo the past two weeks, al though the finish work has not been completed. The Academy is located on South Stage Road between Min ear rd. and Arnold lane. Southern Oregon Federated Dorcas association of Seventh day Adventists will hold an all day meeting Monday, Oct. 14, in the new Red Cross building, 60 Hawthorne ave. The meeting will start at 10 a.m. and a pot luck dinner will be served at noon. Guest speaker will be Miss Maybelle Vandermark from Washington, D. C. the headquart ers of the church.. The ladies of the Valley View Seventh-day Adventist church will be hostesses for the meet ing. Sister fo Speak at Zion Lutheran Sunday Sister Marian Maurer, an offi cial representative of the Board of Deaconess work of the U.C.L.A., will be the guest speaker at the 11 a.m. worship service at Zion Lutheran church, Sunday. She will also visit the Sunday school. In both instances she will tell about the work of the Lutheran diaconate. Sister Marian entered the diaconate from Grace Lutheran church, Shamokin, Pa. Majoring in sacred music, she received the A.B. degree from Capital university, Columbus, Ohio, and is also a graduate of the Baltimore school for parish workers. Sister Marian has had varied experiences in settlement house, rural area work and summer camp programs. She served as parish deaconess and director of music in Luther Memorial church, Madison, Wis., and Grace church, Richmond, Calif. prom Medford she will travel to Our Saviours church, Eugene, to continue her speaking tour.
