Leon's All I've gotx is a bankbook. Ethel S. Is it stingy to try to stretch the dollar? Leon S. My wife and I met and married when we were both in the army. We were both far from home and lonesome and we enjoyed one another's company, so marriage seemed like the natural step. That was two years ago and we sure have learned that mar riage is a lot more complicated than you'd think. We fight about a lot of things because we have such different ideas, but mostly we fight about money. Ethel is just about the stin giest person I ever met. She won't buy anything unless it's on sale. She refuses to buy on time. She says we've got to have a big bank balance before we start having a family. All of my friends have cars, homes, kids and all I've got is a bankbook. Is this living? Ethel S. You'd think I was pocketing Leon's hard-earned money for my own personal use the way he talks. I am saving for our future, the future of our family. I work just as hard as he does and earn almost as much. Surely I have a right to have my say about how the money is spent. I was shocked when I visited! Leon's home after our marriage. His folks are up to their necks in debt. Everything is bought on time. They never get ahead. My parents taught me not to want things I can't pay for right out of my own pocket. Leon calls me stingy, but is it stingy to want to stretch the dollar as far as possible? He ought to be grateful for a wife like me who knows how to make ends meet. He doesn't appre ciate his luck.. The Council One reason young persons are cautioned against hasty marriages is that they lack the wisdom and ex perience to quickly size up an individual and his values. In the service, where every one is away from family, friends and customary activities, this is particularly true. There is little opportunity for individual tastes and values to find expression. Leon and Ethel were unwise to marry without having met each other's families. Family visits would have given them some clues about one another. It certainly would have opened discussion about some of the matters that now cause so much difficulty." A marriage in which there is a conflict of values may be dif ficult, but it can be made suc cessful and even richer in some ways than most, if the partners honestly desire it. Leon and Ethel have much to give one another if they open themselves to a new way of looking at things. Leon is now convinced he is right Ethel is stingy. Ethel is sure nothing can be more vir tuous than "not to want things I can't pay for out of my own pecket." . Yet each point of view has its limitations. A life spent one step ahead of the bill collector surely lacks peace. On the other hand, a life devoted to "stretch- 1 ing the dollar" could result in nothing more fruitful than ex actly that. Leon is justified in complain ing that his bankbook is a poor substitute for the children he wants now not when the bank balance gets big enough. Yes, Leon ought to be grateful for a wife "who knows how to : make ends meet" and Ethel j ought to be grateful for a hus-j band who wants to live as fully as possible. They can make a wonderfully happy compromise out of the situation if they give it a good hard try. (Copyright, 1957. General Features Corp.) Wayne Morse (D-Ore.) and Richard L. Neuberger (D Ore.) and Pep. Al Ullman fired protests with the Air Secretary. In a joint message, Morse and Ullman said late Friday they re garded the move as "false econ omy" and a "weakening" of the nation's defense. Declares Discrimination Neuberger declared that Ore gon has been "severely discrimi nated against" in the securing of defense installations. He said that while California has 54 ma jor military installations and Washington state 19, Oregon has only three. Elk Creek Logger Wriles Journal Story Portland Robert Kline, small' logger and operator-owner of Kline Logging company, Med ford. said that pre-planning fost ers efficiency in an article pur lished in the Sept. 20 issue of The Timberman, national forest industry trade journal. Kline maps, plots, locates skid roads and landings before fall ing, the article notes. He finds that knowledge of rough ground speeds operation for more ef ficient logging. Since there are few accurate maps in Kline's rugged operating area, Elk Creek, pre-planning starts with his own accurate mapping. Con trol is most essential for this mapping, he writes. In addition to his pre-mapping and planning, Kline has several other operating principles of in terest. He builds all his landings and skidroads ahead of the fall ing, moves his loader in between strings of trucks, picking up the I tag ends later, has regular bi-j weekly operating reports, and ! enforces safety precautions.
