Risq soften every pavement clothes a new casual Parker Woods' MAIL TRIBUNE Civic Music Campaign Opens; Rudie Sinfonietta Announced The Rudie Sinfonietta, with eleven instrumentalists . and three soloists, will appear on the 1957-58 Jackson County Civic Music association series, Seth Eullis, president, an nounced today. "We feel that we are extremely fortunate to secure such an outstanding group," Mr. Bullis said. Robert Rudie, conductor and violinist, has appeared at the music festival at Aspen, Colo., and the Casal's festival at Prades, France. Featured with the ensemble will be a baritone, soprano and harp soloist. "This year we will have a var ied and outstanding series of concerts as has been our tradi tion irr the past seventeen years," Mr. Bullis added. Other concerts of the series will be announced at the end of the present membership enrollment week. Officers, chairmen and work ers are invited to the annual "kick off" dinner Monday, Oc tober 7, at 6:30 p.m. in the Pio neer room 'of the Jackson hotel. Enrollment week will 'extend through, Saturday, October. 12. About 150 guests have made reservations for the dinner. Mr. Bullis will conduct the meeting and Mrs. David Davis, regional director from the New York of fices of Civic Concert Service, who is in Medford to assist the local committee, will speak. Mrs. William Duhaime, enroll ment chairman, will instruct the workers. Bridge Players Enter Tournament Fourteen members of the Medford Duplicate Bridge club will play in an individual tour nament in two sessions this afternoon and evening in Grants Pass. The play will be held at the Elks club. At the last meeting of the group Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Bell of Santa Maria, Calif., were visitors. Following the play re freshments were served by Mrs. Floyd Johnson. High scores in the east-west position at the monthly session of master point play were Mrs. W. W. Stevenson arid Roy Pruitt with 132. High in the north-south position were Mrs. Clifford How ard and Jack Harris with 146. Founders7 Day By Mfedford Voters' League The coming Founders day tea of the Medford League of Wom en Voters was discussed Tuesday evening at a meeting of League board members at the home of Mrs. Hugh Collins, president. The affair is planned for early November in honor of the wom en who formed the Medford League in 1939. Members also made plans for the October 26 general meeting which will concern the League's national study item on individ ual liberties. Mrs. Virginia Sher wood is in charge of the study. It deals with the "evaluation of the federal loyalty-security pro grams, with recognition of the need for safeguarding national security and protecting individ ual liberties," she reported. The board decided to send monthly news , bulletins to wom en who attend League functions and show interest in participa tion in study units and other activities. All women interested are wel come to attend the monthly study units, Mrs. Collins said. The morning unit meets the third Wednesday of each month at the home of Mrs. C. Elwood Hedberg, 1206 East Main st., and the evening unit meets the fourth Monday at the home of Mrs. Justin SmitH, 21 Geneva st. Mrs. Charles E. Ford, Eugene, state league president, an nounced that Mrs. Justin Smith, Medford, had accepted the state chairmanship of national domes tic items on the study program. Completing the" list of new ap pointments, Mrs. Ford said Mrs. S. N. Stanley, Beaverton, will serve as chairman of the league interim committee to evaluate the legislative processes and program of the league in Ore gon. Mrs. Richard H. Wilcox, Bea verton, and Mrs. K. E. Montgom ery, Eugene, will represent the Oregon league at the regional conference of 10 western states in Salt Lake City October 8, 9 and 10. The delegates will dis cuss changing patterns in local government and league organi zations. Mrs. Ronald H. Campbell, Cor vallis, past state president, con ducted a training school for the board in the morning session of the all-day Portland meeting. Women Attend Council Session Four members from Alpha Lambda chapter of Medford at tended the Oregon State council meeting of Epsilon Sigma Alpha International sorority held last week-end in Salem. Delegates were Mrs. Chester Peterson, Mrs. Howard Phillips, Mrs. Lyman Smith, and Mrs. Thomas Makris. Special guest speaker Sunday was George Safford, managing director of the Children's Hou pital in Eugene. The Hospital school is the chief philanthropic project for all Oregon chapters. Last year contributions totaled over $6,000. LA goal of $10,000 has been set for tne coming year. Alpha Lambda chapter . will conduct a sale of candy mints during the month of October. En tire proceeds will be donated to the school. On the return trip Sunday af ternoon, the four members stopped at the school and Mr. Safford conducted them on a tour of the class and therapy rooms, explaining special equip ment used by the school. 4 Program Planned For "Sideliners" Central Point A special in vitatioon is extended to all "sideliners" of Nevita chapter, Order of Eastern Star, to attend the next stated meeting of the chapter Tuesday, October 8, at which time they will be honor ed. The project's aim is to "gather readable, factual and helpful in formation so that the average citizen or student can find his way around in Jackson county government," Mrs. Dunbar Car penter, co-chairman for the study, reported. It is planned that the two year survey will provide knowl edge which will make citizens "feel comfortable in knowing the functions and services of each county department," she said. Preliminary steps in the "Know Your County" survey be gan with interviews with the county court and with Mrs. Bereth Hopkins, county clerk. All expressed their wholehearted support of the program and plan to help provide information for the study. - The decision to undertake the project followed a study of the need for more understanding of county government, Mrs. Car penter declared. Leagues throughout the United ' States work on similar studies, using the non-partisan, objective ap proach of the organization. Numerous suggestions cott cerning a need for such an ob jective record of Jackson county government have been made to Mrs. Ward Spatz To Speak for Club Phoenix Mrs. Ward B. Spatz of Medford Rose society will speak on "Roses" at the next meeting of Phoenix Garden club. It will be held at 1:00 p.m. Fri day, October 11 at Phoenix Com munity club.
