V eturn Title Fight Foiiowing Basilio in 15-Round Split Br JACK CUDDY United Press Sporls Writer New York 'IP Carmen Basi lio, who won the world middle weight championship from Sugar Ray Robinson in 15 violent rounds Monday night, will meet ex-champion Ray in a return title fight within six months, it seemed nearly certain today. Basilio, the ex-onion farmer of Chittenango, N.Y., who pounded out a split decision over the an cient but amazing Robinson, said, "1 11 be ready to honor my MEDFORDItTRIBUNE ipaDHBTrs Ducks Bill Pittsburgh On Satu rday University of Oregon, Eugene Oregon's "VVebfoots and the Panthers of Pittsburgh take the lid off Oregon's finest home schedule in years Saturday, meeting in one of the day's top intersectional battles at Port land's Multnomah Stadium. Game time is 8 p.m. The Webfoot home opener, one of six top games slated for Oregon grid fans this fall, brings the nationally ranked Panthers to the west coast for the first time in a score of years, s and coach John Michelosen's crew will stay on the Webfoot campus for a week following the game before flying to Los Angeles and an encounter with Southern Cal ifornia. The game, the second be tween the two schools, should stack up as another thriller. The Panthers won last year at Pittsburgh, 14 - 7. and later earned a Gator Bowl bid against Georgia Tech. 7 3 1 Record Coach Michelosen lost 16 Iet termen from the squad of 1956 which compiled a 7-3-1 record, including losses to Minnesota and Georgia Tech, both nation ally ranked at the close of the season. The Panthers will have lettermen, however, at every starting position except quarter back, left guard and right end. Quarterback Bill Kali den faces a load of pressure guiding his Panthers through one of the n a t i o n's toughest schedules which includes Oklahoma, USC, Nebraska, Army, Notre Dame, Syracuse, West Virginia, Penn State, and Miami besides the Webfoots. Kaliden played just twenty-seven minutes last sea son and did not see action at all in the last four games, but a fine passing arm and able lead ership should compensate for the inexperience. The Ducks will also field an all-veteran starting lineup, lei by the coast's speediest back- field and one of the biggest lines in several seasons. Jim Shanley, Jack Morris and Leroy Phelps pre the speed merchants which Coach Len Casanova will ride with aeainst the strong Pan thers, and each one of the start ers has an able replacement. Oregon's starting line will aver age close to 203 pounds, led by three-year vet Harry Mondale at guard and huge Jim Linden ?t tackle. And Robinson's most trusted advisor, George Gainford, de clared today "Yes, I"d like to see Ray fight Basilio for the title again, if we can get assurances from the boxing commission that the New York state law against the use of collodion-iodi-form ointment will be carried out." Gainford, principal handler in Robinson's corner during the electrifying battle before 33,000 Mounties' Coach Named For Honor Los Angeles (IP) Charlie Metro, skipper of the second place Vancouver Mounties, to day was named Pacific Coast League Manager of the Year by the PCL Baseball Writers asso ciation. George Goodale, the writers' executive secretary, at the same time revealed that Vancouver centerfielder Lennie Green was named Rookie of the Year and the San Francisco Seals' sensa tional relief hurler Leo Kiely was selected as Pitcher of the Year. Metro in nine complete sea sons as a manager won two pen nants and finished out of the firtt division only once. Kiely boasted a 21-6 record in 56 relief appearance this season. Green boasted a .311 batting average in 139 games for Vancouver and was called up to Baltimore shortly before the 1957 PCL sea son ended. Telecast Successful Last Night First closed circuit television presentation of a boxing bout in a Medford theater proved a huge, impressive success last night. It should assure a sellout for the next such venture here and definitely will if a rematch between Carmen Basilio and Sugar Ray Robinson is handled again by theater TV. The Craterian had a full house last night to view the fight being held in far off Yankee stadium. It was an enthusiastic crowd and apparently . well satisfied one. While the picture was not al ways vividly clear, fans could tell easily what was going on. Only once, and then only for a few seconds in the 12th round, did the picture slip and flutter. Big factors which helped the success of Theater Manager Bob Corbin's venture here were the full 15-round length of the en counter and the fact that the match was such a terrific one. It was a real good show and fans got their money's worth. Reactions of the crowd, its shouts and applause, made the Craterian seem almost like ring side. Fans at the Medford the ater, judging from the cheers and boos, were largely pro-Ba-silio. So the outcome of the fight was popular with the majority of viewers. Cheers flooded the Craterian before Basilio's name was spoken as champion. The announcer said the one word, "new," and the local viewers knew he had the title and a well deserved crown, the way he kept boring in. Judging from comments out side the theater after the fight a sizeable pile of money changed hands locally as a result of the outcome of the fight. RDJ. Sportsmen Group To Have Meeting Shady Cove Shady Cove chapter of the Oregon Sports men club of Jackson County will meet at 8 p.m. today at the Shady Cove fire hall to discuss the coming hunting season and regulations. Considered Tip-Off Although Robinson told re porters he would require four or five days to decide whether to fight Basilio again or retire, Gainford's statement was inter preted by Sugar Ray's friends as the tipoff of a return brawl. Thirty-seven - year-old Robin son has a pre - fight contract with Basilio, calling for a return shot at the title within 90 days or at a mutually agreeable time thereafter. Carmen's own welterweight crown was not at stake Monday night; but the title was vacated automatically the instant his hand was raised in victory as new middleweight champion, by state law. Whether the New York State Athletic commission could make some exception, should Robinson unexpectedly retire and should Basilio prefer to keep the welter title is a matter of conjecture. Basilio, who almost retired in despair six years ago because of ring reverses, triumphed hero ically Monday night in the great est fight of his life and one of the most thrilling ever staged in any ring. The betting was at "even mon ey" when they squared bff , and it was a "zigzag" conflict in which each was staggered sever al times and each appeared on the verge of a knockout at least once. In the bloody eleventh ses sion, Robinson bleeding from the nose was stunned by a right to the head and then bat tered nearly a minute on the ropes. In the 13th, Basilio may have been saved by the bell, af ter a left hook buckled his knees and a barrage to the head left him lurching about crazily and ready to fall. But neither of the rugged champions went to the canvas once. 6 '2-Pound Edge Basilo, weighing 153V2 pounds to Robinson's 160, forced the fighting in every round against his heavier and rangier opponent. Before the struggle was finished, Carmen was bleed ing from two gashes over his left eye and from the nose and there was a large mouse under his right eye. But he was still forcing the fight and he won the last round on the cards of all three ring officials. Meanwhile, Sugar Ray fight ing defensively and trying to catch his shorter opponent with uppercuts and left hooks as he came in made such a gallant stand that Referee Al Berl voted him the fight on a rounds basis, 9-6. But Judges Artie Aidala and Bill Rechet favored Basilio re spectively, 9-5-1 and 8-6-1. The United Press agreed, 9-6. A poll of 47 sports writers at the ring side showed 26 for Basilio, 17 for Robinson and four "even." Ducks to Meet Pittsburgh Team Eugene, Ore. OP) The Uni versity of Oregon, home from a tough 9-6 victory over rugged Idaho, opened practice sessions Monday in preparation for a game with Pittsburgh in Port land this week end. Line coach Bill Hammer, re turned from scouting Pittsburgh at the Oklahoma-Pitt clash Sat urday, said the Panthers were big and rugged. With the ex ception of some costly mistakes, Hammer said, the game at Pitts burgh was a "real close one" in spite of the 26-0 score in the Sooners' favor. Stanford, Calif. Texas A&M and Georgia Tech which also opened the 1957 sea son with impressive victories, ranked second and third behind the Sooners in the choices of the 35 leading coaches who comprise the United Press rating board. Coach Bud Wilkinson's pow erful legions, national champ ions for the past two seasons, were the No. 1 choice of 30 coaches following Saturday's 26 0 triumph over Pitt. Two other coaches picked Oklahoma sec ond, one third and two fourth. That gave the Sooners 340 points out of a possible 350. Michigan State, Minnesota and Michigan, the three Big Ten powers who do not open their season until nejet week end, were ranked fourth, fifth and sixth in that order. Navy, Tennessee, Duke and Oregon State rounded out the first week's top 10 in Tornado Has Sixth Spot In Grid Poll Portland (IP) Marsh fields High school was ranked in first place among Oregon's A-l high school football teams today with Noxlh Salem second and Milwaukie third. With points distributed on a 10-9-8 down to 1 basis for votes from first to 10th places, Texas A&M received 210 points, trail ing Oklahoma by 130. The Texas Aggies opened their season with a 21-13 triumph over Mary land in the week's nationally televised game. Georgia Tech had 196 points, Michigan State 193, Minnesota 183, Michigan 142, Navy 104, Tennessee 91, Duke 87 and Ore gon State 77. Baylor topped the second 10 group, followed in order by Iowa, Ohio State, Texas and UCLA. Southern Methodist and Stanford were tied for 16th place, Pitt and Penn State were tied for 18th, and Rice was 20th. In all, 36 teams received votes in the first ratings of the sea son. Oregon State is the only PCC team in the top 10. Those tied with Oregon for 26th are South ern California, Washington State, Utah, Colorado and Auburn.
