Newspaper Page TextEIGHT MEDFORD (OREGON) Braves Take Pennant West For First Time in Decade; Yankees Take American By FRED DOWN United Press Sports Writer The Milwaukee Braves took the National League pennant west for the first time in a dec ade today while the New York Yankees added an eighth Ameri can League flag to Casey Sten gel's golden nine-year regime. The races ended 10 minutes apart Monday night when a two run homer by Hank Aaron gave the Braves a 4-2, 11-inning clincher over the St. Louis Car dinals and the Kansas City Ath letics dealt the Chicago White Sox their knockout blow with a 6-5 triumph. The long - frustrated Braves thus enjoyed the thrill of clinch Bums Take Leave Of Home Base Brooklyn (IF) Brooklyn says "goodbye" tonight to its be loved Bums probably forever. When the Dodgers clash with the Pittsburgh Pirates under the arc-lights at Ebbets Field, they will be winding up their home season for 1957 and with it a screwy saga that started back in 1900 and ran through every emotion in the book from high drama to low comedy. After tonight the Dodgers will have only three games left, all in Philadelphia. And even New York Mayor Robert Wagner now admits that the team probably will play next season in Los Angeles "barring some unforeseen de velopment." So tonight they'll close the back cover on a "book" that in cluded such characters as the zany Babe Herman, one-hit hero Cookie Lavagetto, controversial Jackie Robinson, and stars like Zach Wheat, Nap Rucker, Dazzy Vance, Jake Daubert, Roy Cam panella, Gil Hodges, and Duke Snider. It's a story that prompted a million jokes, mostly bad, like "I would have gone to Brooklyn, but I lost my passport." It made the very word "Brooklyn" a reason for gales of laughter on radio programs and television shows. Hawaii Practice Pleases Coach Portland (IP) The Univer sity of Hawaii was back at prac tice here today in preparation for its Saturday tussle with Hum boldt State College at Eureka, Calif. Coach Herny Vasconcellos said he was very pleased with his team's strong showing against Lewis and Clark last Saturday. The team will practice here today before leaving for Eure ka Wednesday afternoon. McGUIRE TRADED New York (IPi Dick Mc Guire, one of pro basketball's greatest playmakers, has been traded by the New York Knick erbockers to the Detroit Pistons in exchange for Detroit's No. 1 draft choice next year. The 31-year-old McGuire played eight seasons with the Knicks and led the club in assists seven times. (IP) The St. Louis Cardinals lost the Na tional league pennant Monday night, but there was no weep ing. The attitude in the Redbirds' quiet clubhouse after the Mil walkee Braves clinched the pen nant seemed to be, "wait 'til next year." General Manager Frank Lane said, "We'll be- right up there again next year. Look what we did this year, and we're bound to be better." "I'm prouder of our bunch than I ever was," Lane said. "They battled all the way and they never gave up, even when the odds got longer and longer. And we had a manager that did a great job." Lane also complimented Man ager Fred Haney and the Braves. "They've got a great club," he said. "When they were down and we were hot they bounced right back. We lost to a worthy team." Stan Musial, the veteran slug ger who sets new life time rec ords every time he gets a hit. said, "we fought all the way and did better than most any body expected." OSC Back Eligible For Bowl Corvallis (IP) Paul Lowe, halfback on Oregon State's Rose Bowl football team, "was elig ible in every way to represent the Pacific Coast conference on Jan. 1 when Oregon State play in the Rose Bowl," Glen Hol comb, OSC faculty representa tive declared here late Monday. Holcomb was replying to a remark by Los Angeles assemb lyman Charles Wilson earlier Monday which inferred the col lege helped Lowe's scholastic marks to permit him to play in the 1957 Rose Bowl game with Iowa State. Holcomb said the athletic code of the PCC states: "A student who is eligible dur ing a semester or quarter re mains eligible until the begin ning of the following semester or quarter. "A student eligible to com pete during a semester or quar ter preceding a vacation period is eligible to compete in contests during such vacation period be tween semesters or quarters, al though he may not be eligible the semester or quarter follow ing the vacation." Holcomb explained that OSC winter quarter did not start un til Jan. 3, 1957, and that Lowe did not return to the campus after that. The 66 -year -old Stengel's eighth pennant enabled him to tie Hall of Famer Joe McCar thv Yankee record and left him one flag behind the American League mark set by Connie Mark. The major league record of 10 pennants is held by John McGraw. The pennant was tne 23rd in the Yankees' fabulous success story which began in 1921. George Wilson Inherits Experienced Detroit Squad Editors: This is anolhpr in a series on ihe 1957 prospects of National Football League teams. By LLOYD NORTHARD Detroit (IP) George Wilson inherited 30 veterans, including two of the game's top quarter backs, when he became head coach of the Detroit Lions last month but he realizes experience alone docs not assure him of a National Football league title. "This is a better team than the Lions of 1956," Wilson agreed "But we've got to expect that each of the teams we meet during the regular season will be better, too." Wilson, an assistant coach with the Lions for eight years, is still recovering' from the shock of being elevated to head coach overnight on the eve of Detroit's first exhibition game. Rote came to the Lions from Green Bay in a summer trade, one of three trades which Wilson believes strengthened the Lions considerably. Detroit also picked up fullback. He said the switch of former Iowa quarterback Jerry Reichow to end has made a big difference. "Jerry has done a fine job during the exhibition season." the head coach pointed out. "It is making some of our holdover ends work a little harder." Wilson guessed that not more than five or six rookies will make the grade with the Lions. Three Berths Left "It ta okre to takes an outstanding rookre to take a job away from a steady veteran," he said. "The veteran has the advantage of ex perience." ' ' Two rookies end Steve Junk er of Xavier and defensive half back Terry Barr of Michigan have already virtually clinched berths with the Lions. If the 30 veterans stick with the club, that means only three more berths are available for rookies since the regular season player limit is 35. Offensive tackles John Gordy of Tennessee and Ken Russell of Bowling Green, and halfback Marv Brown of East Texas State are other leading rookie candi dates. In addition to inheriting an almost all-veteran team from Parker, Wilson also inherited Buddy's scorn of pre-season pre dictions. "We'll find out how good the other teams are and how good we are between now and mid-December," he said when asked to rate the teams in Detroit's di vision. (IP) Fresno State college, talent-loaded in the backfield, hopes to produce some new names in the forward wall to brighten the Bulldogs' star in the West Coast football realm. Coach Clark Van Galder has only eight returning lettermen for the season, plus less than a dozen experienced returnees from among non-lettermen ranks. At the same time. Fresno is faced with a schedule which has only a "few breathers." Fresno's backfield shapes up into the familiar names of quar terback Jim Kuhn, who proved his mettle as a freshman last year; fullback Dean Philpott who is regarded by Van Galder as the best on the coast and right halfback George Van Zant, a hard blocker and defensive man. Good Left Halfs There are some good new-comers at left halfback, including Hal Sellers, Wes McWilliams, Bill Wayte and Frank Gaslro. The Bulldogs were defeated 27-14 in their season opener Sat urday night by Montana State. Varying sets of figures had measured the punt at from, 77 to 83 yards. But Barackman said it was determined the ball trav elled from Idaho's 16 to Ore gon's 7, a distance of 77 yards. The record is 82 yards set by Idaho's Flip Kleffner against Washington State in 1953.
