W If your television picture ripples and the sound includes some extempor aneous noises, the chances are that a ham radio operator has his beam linked with your set. But a Federal Communica tions Commission expert says this doesn't justify an all-out battle with the amateur radio enthusiasts. Paul Hampton, Kan sas City, says the trouble can be stopped 99 times out of 100 by installation of a $4 filter. Hampton said nine of 10 com plaints in this area on outside interference stem from TV re ceivers that cannot keep out lo cal signals. He said that since the ham cannot be forced to stop operating, the TV owner should install the filter. Hampton said there have been cases in which hams come in abruptly on radios and even hi-fi record players. A filter will stop this trouble, too, he said. Hampton said the oddest case he ever handled involved an Omaha home. A ham operator, he said, got his signal mixed with a home which had radio-operated garage doors. ' Every time the ham so much as turned on the transmitter, he said, the ga rage doors at the house would go up or down. Career or College! Sulfa Drugs Can Cause Death of Animals Chicago OPl The American Veterinary Medical association says sulfa drugs, improperly used, can cause death to ani mals. The association said the in creased incidence of sulfonomide poisoning reported by veterinar ians indicates that many live stock raisers are not -aware of the poisonous effects of over dosages or prolonged use of sulfa drugs. Over-use of these drugs can cause sulfonomide crystals to accumulate in the kidneys until they block the secreting tubules and cause death, the association said. New Yorker Celebrates 40th Year As Proprietor of Large Dance Hall By DOC QUIGG United Press Correspondent New-York (IP) Lou Breck er, who is celebrating the 40th anniversary in his career of in ducing people to play footsy with a slick maple floor, esti mates that around 20 million persons have danced through his life from ragtime to cha-cha. In 40 years as a dance-palace proprietor, he's, seen some changes made. The hostess and the dime -a -dance have passed out of his place. In the early days, the average age of the dancers was about 25. Now, it's 35 or more. And there are plenty of ""elderly people who are steady customers. Now he has a family clientele. "Sixty per cent of our crowd come in in couples," he says. "In past years, when he had hostesses, 10 per cent couples was a big percentage." Started In Philadelphia It was August, 1917, when Brecker opened his place at 12th and Chestnut in Philadelphia. Two years later, when he moved here and opened his famous Roseland Ballroom for a long run at 51st and Broadway, the first floor of the building was occupied by Healy's carriage factory;' "I guess you can say we moved in at the end of the carriage era and carried right on into the beginning of the jet era," Brecker said as he sat at a table in his new block-big, 4-million-dollar building and watched more than l.odo dancers swirling a remarkable crowd consider ing that it was in the middle of a weekday summer afternoon. The old Roseland Ballroom tlje place where dance mara thons began in 1924, where Roxy staged a dance wedding in the late 1920's, where, at a funeral j for prohibition, people marched flasks in is being torn down. Brecker's sumptuous new place, which began business last December, is called Roseland Dance City. It has a 30.000-square-foot dance floor, three television lounges, a $350,000 yearly budget for name bands. Rock 'n' roll is banned. No ad mittance without a necktie. If you need one, you can buy it at the box office for 35 cents, and you can get a refund when you leave. No Bermuda shorts. And shoes must be worn while danc ing. . 4 Once, an actress took her shoes off to dance and was made to put them back on. You're probably familiar with the bowling enthusiast who car ries his own ball with him to the alleys. But did you know that dance enthusiasts carry their dancing shoes with them? Yep, and leave their regular shoes in the check-room while dancing. Brecker goes for name bands now. He paid Guy Lombardo $10,000 a week for a two-week stand. Coming up this fall he has such as Les Brown, Sammy Kaye, Richard Maltby, Ted Lew is, and Xavier Cugat. Wallflowerism now is prac ticed as an art unto itself. "A good portion of our customers," Brecker said, 'don't dance but just sit and listen and watch."
