This tumor produc es what is called a viril izing, or male- Dr Aivares producing hor mone which, in a few months, can change a pretty girl into a fat. coarse-looking woman with hair on her face, and a big abdo- j men with large striations on it. A miracle happens when the J little tumor is removed and the ugly, coarse-looking and fat woman is changed back quickly into a pretty, trimly-built girl. Another disease which can change a child into a coarse looking, fat and pudgy-faced in dividual is a loss of function in ! the thyroid gland. I remember one day seeing in the hall of my building a mother with a dwarfed child who was as typi cal a pudgy and stupid-looking cretin as I had ever seen. Her eyes were slits between thick ened lids, and her tongue was too big for. her mouth. I prayed a little prayer that they would come into my office, and sure enough, they did. The girl was about 15 and had been too stu pid to go to school. Because she felt like the princess imprisoned in a tree by a bad witch, she would go often into terrible tan trums of rage and frustration. Unfortunately, no one had ever recognized what was wrong with her; they thought she was just feeble-minded. Within six weeks after I put her on thyroid substance, she had lost her ex cess weight and had grown tall er. Within a few. months she was a pretty girl, bright and keen, and going to high school. She called me her father because I had given her a second life. I am sorry this miracle cannot be performed for the 95 per cent of mentally retarded children whose thyroid gland is normal. Diaphragmatic Hernia Many people, on being x-rayed after a barium meal, are told they have a bit of stomach up in their chest. It goes up through the hole alongside the gullet, where it comes down through the midriff, or diaphragm. In probably 95 per cent of the cases this hernia can be disregarded because either it isn't producing symptoms, or it is producing so few symptoms that the patient can get along very nicely. To day, few surgeons care to oper ate on these things, unless the patient is suffering great dis tress. I haven't had such a pa tient operated on in many years. In most cases, I could say to the person, "If you'll take off News Scotland Yard Scotland Yard- , Theatre Royal -Theatre Royal News KWIN Karavan ABC CBS NBC MBS KBOY 730 KC Music, news and weather, sun-up to sundown, except: Bargain Roundup at 10:00 A.M. and 2:30 P.M..
