Gran Fire The Ashland fire department extinguished a grass fire on Faith st. near Highway 99 Saturday. The fire burned about half of a vacant lot, ac cording to the fire department. Dakota Picnic All former residents of North and South Dakota are invited to a "Dakota Picnic" at North Bend in the North Bend City park Sunday, Aug. 12, at noon. Those attend ing should bring table service and a potluck dish. Coffee, milk and ice cream will be furnished by the committee. Conger-Morris Funeral home was in charge. The Rev. John D. Trude, fo the Seventh Day Adventist church, officiated. Survivors besides the parents, include four brothers, Pat, George, James, and Benjamin; four sisters, Pearl, Ruby, Opal, and Jewel; grandparents, M. L. Williams, Delta, Colo.; and C. P. Van Orwick, Medford, also sev eral aunts, uncles, and cousins. ELLA FRANKLIN - Services for Mrs. Melinda El len Franklin, the mother of Doyle and Dale ' Franklin, who died Thursday- night, will be held at Conger-Morris Friday at 1:30 p.m. Interment will be at Siskiyou Memorial park. Bible Camps to Open At Lake on Monday Youth Bible camps sponsored by the Southern Oregon Com munity Churches' Fellowship, Inc., opens Monday, Aug. 12, at Camp McLaughlin, Lake of the Woods. The Bible camps will run for three consecutive weeks. The first week, Aug. 12 through 17, will be for girls, ages 9 through 12; Aug. 19 through 24 will be for teenagers; and the third week, Aug. 26 through 31 will be for boys, ages 9 through 12. The three camps will be direc ted by the Rev. Noel Olson, pastor of the Fort Dick Com munity church. Fort Dick, Cal., according to the Rev. Paul O. Kroon, pastor of the Central Point Community Bible church and president of the Churches' fellowship. The Youth Bible camp pro gram was started in 1952 at the old CCC camp site at Cop per on the-upper Applegate. In 1953 the camp was held at the same site but in 1954 the Salva tion Army camp at Lake of the Woods was used. Accident Fatal To Youth Near Waldport Waldport, Ore. API Wil- lard C. Wallen, 20, was killed at i 3.30 a.m. Saturday in a one car accidentia miles east of Wald-! port on the Alsea river road ! ' just west of Bear Creek lodge. (If) Adm. Arth ur W. Radford urged Saturday that America keep its retaliatory striking force so powerful that no enemy can destroy it at the start of a war. In his valedictory as a mili tary man and as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of S,taff, Radford said the circumstances of history and modern war have forced the United States to adopt a "nation al policy" of relying on retalia tory military strentgh to prevent or win a war. Final Tribute Paid To Oliver Hardy Beverly Hills, Calif (IP) More than 150 members of Holly wood's movie colony paid a fi nal tribute Friday to funnyman Oliver Hardy, 65, the rotund partner in the Laurel and Hardy slapstick team, while ailing Stan Laurel was confined to his home. Members of the Hardy family, some close friends and a troupe of filmland old timers attended the Masonic funeral rites. Cre mation and interment at the Val halla Memorial Park in nearby North Hollywood followed the service. Hardy died .Wednesday from the effects1 of a paralytic stroke he suffered nine months ago. IB A smallboy was found by Rangers Saturday on a sheer Yosemite National park cliff where ' he had been stranded overnight. Rangers radioed park head quarters the youngster was safe and in good physical condition. He was to be brought to Yose mite Valley later Saturday. The boy is Terry Bivens. 6, of Portland, Ore. He became separated from his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bivens, late Friday while in a hiking party en route to the valley on the Yosemite Falls trail. , Rangers said Terry was found by rock climbers about one half mile from Columbia Point about one thousand feet above the val ley floor. He had worked his way down the trail to a point where it started upward, but decided against the climb and ascended off the trail to a rocky ledge where he became trapped. His disappearance was report ed by his parents Friday night when the party reached the val ley. Bivens had believed Terry was hiking with his mother and she thought the boy was with his father. " The Bivens family had started on the hike from Tioga road at the Yosemite Creek crossing. They arrived in the park earlier in the week and had been stay ing at Camp 11. Los Vegas Newspaper Building Burned Friday Las Vegas, N.M. , (IB Fire swept through the Las Vegas Daily-Optic newspaper building late Friday night, and most of the equipment was damaged. The building was virtually de stroyed, and Publishrer Tom Wright indicated it would not be possible to publish the Daily Optic, an afternoon paper.'inhe immedate future. No one was in the building when the . fire started, about 7 p.m. Cause of the fire was not known. Movie Officials Reach Agreement Manila (IP The Philippine government and officials of the American motion picture indus try 'announced a "satisfactory" solution Saturday to the prob lem of tax payment by American movies. President Carlos P. Garcia and representatives of the Am erican Motion Picture Export as sociation agreed that American movies would pay taxes here for the year 1956. It was also agreed that the question of paying back taxes by the American movies will be submitted to " the . tax court for final decision. The association had threaten ened to stop exportation of Am erican films to the Philippines unless the Philippuie govern ment found a solution to the problem facing the movie in dustry here.
