Kennedy has been begging City Hall for appropriations for 5,000 additional, full trained po licemen. He has had to settle for a night patrol of 536 rookie cops with only five weeks of training. They are permitted to carry service revolvers and night sticks. Despite the rookie-reinforce- Museum Pieces From Washington Home Corning, N.Y. IUT Two items of considerable historical inter est from the ancestral home of George Washington have been added to the Corning Glass Cen ter's Museum. Visitors to the museum this summer will see two panels of heraldic stained glass, made In 1588, commemorating two mar riages in the Washington family in the days of the Tudors, a cen tury before Washington's great grandfather came to Virginia. Some historians have attrib uted the design of the American flag to a pattern of stars and stripes the Washington family's coat of arms which appears on the left side of each of the two panels. Originally at Sulgrave Manor, Washingon's ancestral home, the two panels were purchased this year for nearly $9,000 at an auc tion in London. ments, criminals continued their war against society Wednesday. from the time the rookie patrol went on duty 6 p.m. (e.d.t.) Tuesday until 6 a.m. (e.d.t.) Wednesday there" were 53 ar rests. A 16-year-old boy was ar rested for burglary and four youths, ranging in age from 15 to 17 years, were arrested as car thieves. None of the arrests was made by & rookie, but officials cast no blame on the fledgling officers. "It's too early and too soon to evaluate the effectiveness of as signing the rookies . to patrol," Acting Police Commissioner James R. Kennedy said. The City Youth Board, which gets $1,800,000 from the state, has pleaded for more money so workers could be assigned to all 110 known "fighting" teen-age First Lady Showered With Flowers, Cards Washington (IP) Mrs. Eisen hower enjoyed a growing collec tion of flowers and get-well cards and messages today as she continued her satisfactory recov ery from Tuesday's operation. A White House aide said the First Lady has received a con siderable number of sympathetic messages wishing her a speedy recovery. "She's a very popular First Lady," the aide commented. gangs instead of the 60 now cov ered by the board's program. Now it has to deploy its entire gang staff to aid police in curb ing the present reign of terror. School officials and social workers consider the wayward adolescent the natural product of heartless, unconscionable par ents who offer neither love nor recognition to their unwanted children. The gang offers a sense of belonging and praise for achievement. Movies, television, magazines, and comic books often portray delinqueny espec ially among adults as socially acceptable. America already spends $25 to $30 billion a year in the war against crime. Nobody seems to know the answer. The Salvation Army wants permission to work with the police in reforming hoodlums. Evangelist Billy Gra ham has proposed educational youth camps and ranches where teenagers can "sound off" in constructive ways. . If New York follows the pat tern of the past, the current crime "wave' will taper off and the city will be lulled into a false sense of security for anoth er six months or a year. Then a series of murders or gang wars will bring the problem to the surface again, and again there will be talk of "getting to the roots." An official recently suggest ed that nothing will really be accomplished until it is unsafe to walk on Park ave. after sun- I set.
