A Hollywood chapter of the new National Academy ef Re cording Arts and Sciences has been formed with Paul Weston, Columbia records executive and husband of Jo Stafford, as presi dent. A New York chapter next will be organized. " Then the Academy will add to the long list of awards that are handed out every year to every body from Lassie to Yul Bryn ner. We're having a statuette de signed now and an awards com mittee is working on a name for it," said Weston. Holmes Urges Step In Traffic Safety Portland (IP) Responsibility and not fear should be empha sized in promotion of traffic ; safety, Gov. Robert D. Holmes said Wednesday. Holmes spoke at a Junior t Chamber of Commerce luncheon ! where he accepted Oregon's first-place award for pedestrian protection presented by the American Automobile Associa ! tion. "It is not fear we should em phasize but responsibility ttnd the dignity and satisfaction of being responsible," he said. The governor added, "when it becomes pleasant and fashion able tQ praise a driver for his common sense, people will exer cise common sense. By ALINE MOSBY United Press Correspondent One name being considered is "Eddie," after Thomas Edison, father of the gramophone. The awards will be made in numer ous categories with the focus' probably on awards given to the' top female and male vocal rec ords of 1957. The statuettes will be handed the winners on a TV "spectacular." ' To Further Profession ' - ' "This academy" has been under discussion for many years," an enthusiastic Weston said. "Our purpose is the same as the movie and TV academies an honorary to further our profession. "We feel it's about time the record industry grows up and gets a little . recognition for its part in the entertainment indus try. The record companies never promote records as a form of en tertainment the way movie and TV companies promote them selves. .-' "After all, a lot of stars got their start in the phonograph medium. And the record indus try is in a tremendous boom now because of hi-fi." - Recording artists will vote on the awards. Classical musicians and singers also have been invit ed to join the academy and will receive awards, too.
