SIX MEDFOFD (ORESCM) MAS. TRIBUNE Treasury Department Watch on Cigarette Controversy Wasmngton W The U. S Treasury is watching closely V ee how the public responds k the current hullabaloo about smoking and lung cancer. The reason? Tobacco taxes en rich treasury coffers by more than a' billion and a half dollars a year. More than 90 per cent of this comes from the sale of cigarettes, said by some to be tied if only statistically to lung cancer In the government year that ended June 30, 1958, federal to bacco taxes yielded Sl,613,497, 000. Cigarettes accounted for $1, 549,045,000. Spencer Tracy, who stars in this unique story supported only AUn Mosbr by a little boy and a big fish, today is rowing his boat in the comfortable se clusion of a 750,000-gallon arti ficial ocean on Stage 5 at Warn er Bros. But originally the plan was to film the entire picture at sea, and the storms behind the cam era on Leland Hayward's pro duction for Warner Bros, were mightier than any in Heming way's book about an old man trying to conquer a marlin. Two years ago Hayward began work on the project, and l'i years ago the company went to Cuba. "It was the toughest picture tne worm to shoot, said the frank-talking Hayward. "There were 125 people in the company, just waiting. In the morning the sea would be too rough. In the afternoon, no sun or no clouds. It was agony. "It sounds easy to film sharks, but we couldn't find any," he continued. "Fred Zinneman, the director. Tracy and I fought like cats and dogs. Fred wanted to make the film completely at sea. Spence always felt the lo cation was wrong. We tried to shoot Spence in his rowboat. but the tides, the wind, everything went wrong." Finally Zinneman quit. As Hayward says, "Fred just gave up." Don t tell me, it is none of my business. It is Said too many people have paid too much' for their homes and, therefore, burdened them selves seriously from a finan cial angle. According to deep students of the situation, a man with a $5,000 a year income should not pay more than $9,000 for a house. A $7,000 a year man should not pay more for a home than $13,500. A $10,000 a year man should limit the purchase price of his home to $18,000. Hones and Woman Among the innumerable things I don't understand about women is why some brunettes feature a streak of blonde hair in the front and apparently think it is attractive. Looks ridiculous to me. Also why do some women think those "fish net" stockings are an aid to leg appearance and increase their power of male attraction. I think that type of hosiery is a major handicap to appearance. Another angle that puzzles me is how some females can gaze into a rear view mirror and still think they look cute in that curious article of fem inine attire known as "toreador pants." Time Will Tell Exactly what effect the latest swarm of reports and testimony on smoking and cancer will have is not yet clear. The best meas ure of tobacco sales, government revenue, will not be reported for July and August until autumn. However, several dealers in Washington queried ,by the United Press reported recent cig arette sales were above those for last year. One wholesaler said "The can cer scare hasn't done a thing." He said he is selling 2Vi to 3 per cent more cigarettes than a year ago. Two down-town pipe shops, however, claimed a recent' rush of first-pipe buyers. One firm said business was brisk these days for what usually has been a slow season. ' "Ninety per. cent of people buying pipes lately are switch ing from cigarettes," the shop owner said. He added the switch was not confined to men. "One woman came in the oth er day and bought a pipe for her husband and another for her self," he said. "For that matter, we have a woman from one of the embassies who smokes a pipe constantly." Short Seller Must Be Extremely Nimble, Market Expert Claims By ELMER C. WALZER United Press Financial Editor New York (IPl Go ahead and be a bear for a short time if you can sniff a poor earnings report coming up, suggests a broker. But he puts the novice on a spot when he add this to his advice: "Of course a short seller must be extremely nim ble, and do Elmer Waller any short sell ing with a professional flair, not in an amateur manner." This line of reasoning comes from Eldon A. Grimm, analyst for Walston & Co., in a dis sertation on earning reports. He notes the report coming to light for the first half are proving very much mixed. Here and there are some good ones. Others are poor. Several Opportunities In cases where profits reports are much better than expected, traders can find several oppor tunities on the upside, he notes. "On the other hand," he adds, "if the trader can anticipate a poor report, or one where the earnings are quite a bit less than generally expected, he can try for a turn on the short side of the market sell short and buy back a few days later." He didn't say so but it's a mighty good thing to do the short selling some time before the actual report appears. When a poor report comes as a surprise its practically im possible to sell the issue short, because a short sale can be made only on an uptick, and there are very few upticks in a de clining stock. There's one more little thine to know about a short sale. There's no limit to one's losses. When one buys a stock for say $25 a share, the most he can lose is the $25 plus the commis sion if the stock evaporates. When one sells short there is no limit to the heights it can reach, and each point of rise is a dollar lost per. share for the short sell er if he guesses the market wrong. No Known Drugs To Combat Oriental Flu Washington API A public health spokesman said Saturday that no known drugs are effec tive in curing oriental flu which is spreading in this country.' He said the recommended treatment is the same as for oth er types of flu and the common cold "go to bed, drink a lot of liquids, take aspirin." "Of course, a doctor should be called if necessary," he said. The public health service said reports of outbreaks of orient al flu are continuing to come in. Most of them, however, refer to only an "influenza-like" illness. Olym pus. During this period when peace reigned on earth -and all men lived in prosperity the gods ex perienced continual happiness. Each evening in the hall of fath er Jupiter they met to enjoy the divine food, ambrosia, and drink nectar served by Jupiter's lovely young daughter, Hebe. One evening, to the great dis gust of Jupiter who could not endure clumsiness, Hebe stumb led and fell, spilling . the delic ious liquid. -Seats at Table "You shall never again serve the nectar," thundered the king of the gods in great wrath, as the unhappy Hebe seated her self at the table. Kindly, lame Vulcan saved the situation by joking about his infirmity as he limped from place to place filling the delicate goblets. - ; . Assuming mortal form, Jup iter, the next day descended to earth in search of someone among the mortals on -whom he might bestow the honor of flagon bearer for the gods. All morning he traveled from place to place but found no one to please him, until he reached Mount Ida and saw the hand some Ganymede, son of the king of Troy. Returning to Mt. Olympus, Ju piter sent a large eagle to seize the lad and bring him to the home of the gods. Because of Ganymede's excellence as a cup bearer, the king of the gods honored the eagle by placing it in the sky. And there it may be seen during the weeks of sum mer and autumn, flying from east to west. Ohlson said he set the boys' bodies on fire to hide his crime. Police found a key near the naked and mutilated bodies of the brothers which led to Ohl son's arrest when investigators learned the key fit his apart ment door. A heavy-bladed Mexican hunt ing knife found in his apartment was the weapon Ohlson used to butcher the boys, police said. Also found was a shirt and a pair of trousers. The knife was repeatedly plunged into the boys' abdomens "with maniacal force," a detective said. Ohlson was one of a score of known sex deviates questioned by police after the boys' charred and mutilated bodies were dis covered under a pile of smolder ing branches in a secluded gully at Field park. and the overhead point. ' This short line of three stars with the bright Altair in the middle can be easily recognized and is a positive identification for Aquila the Eagle, a constel lation shaped like a narrow, sharp pointed diamond, standing upright in the southeast. The dim star above Altair forms the left or eastern side of the diamond while another dim star about six degrees (distance between Pointers in the Big Dip per is roughly five degrees) to the right or west of the first one mentioned, points out the west ern side of this figure. Two Faint Stars Two more faint stars represent the "top" and "bottom" of this diamand which is just about twice as high as it is wide. A star to the west or right of the two sides is also included in this sky picture. Some people see in this star group, which does not resemble a bird, the form of an airplane or an arrow as well as a diamond but this requires a great deal of imagination. Altair, the only bright star in this constellation and estimated to be 16 light years, or approxi mately 96 trillion miles, distant from the earth is traveling to wards our planet at the rate of about 1,000 miles per minute. A People Criminal Libel Suit Opens Today Hollywood (IP) The criminal libel trial of two representatives of Confidential magazine opened today following the issuing of subpoenas to a host of film ce lebrities to appear as defense witnesses at the proceedings. The attorney for defendants Fred and Marjorie Meade said among the more than 100 celeb rities subpoenaed were Walter Pidgeon, Gary Cooper, Corinne Calvet and Lana Turner. The defense reportedly planned to use the many witnesses in an attempt "to establish the truth of the various articles" pub lished in Confidential and Whis per magazines. Assistant Attorney General Clarence Linn labeled the de fense action in serving the sub poenaes as "a reign of terror." Many subpoenaed personalities met over the week end with their attorneys to determine if they would have to undergo cross examination in connection with articles printed about them in Confidential and Whisper magazines. Defense attorney Arthur J. Crowley maintained the defense had the right to subpoena the film stars for the trial. The Meades were employed as West Coast representatives for the two publications. The couple voluntarily surrendered to the Grand Jury indictments on the charge while the editors and publishers of the magazines have fought extradition from the East.
