Rep. John A. Blatnik (D-Minn.) said snlokers "might Just as well be smoking the old unfilt ered cigarettes." Just As flack Nicotine Blatnik said his House sub committee's inquiry showed that smokers are getting Just as much tar and nicotine from the new filter-tip cigarettes as from the regular-size plain-tip variety. But he said smokers are paying close to $200 million a year extra for filter tips. Moreover, he told the United Press, advertisers have spent hundreds of millions of dollars during the last four years to promote filter-tip cigarettes, but smokers got a better tobacco for less money with the old un filtered variety. Sixth Complete 2T. rlker Republican Takes on Six for McCarthy's Post Madison, Wis. Hfl A lone "Eisenhower Republican" takes on six conservative candidates in next Tuesday's Wisconsin GOP primary battle for the Senate seat Joseph R. McCarthy made famous. Only two Democrats, both of the Liberal wing of the party, are contending for the right to run the special election Aug. 27 to fill the vacancy left by Mc Carthy's death last May. Election officials predicted a light turnout of voters, despite the bumper crop of seven Re publican candidates in a state which the GOP has dominated for years. Former Gov. Walter J. Kohler, 53, is the only solid Eisenhower supporter among the GOP cand idates. He has charged his op ponents with being Old Guard, super-reactionary, and isolation ist. Blow for Blow Most of the three-time gov ernor's thrusts have been aimed at former Rep. Glenn R. Davis, 42, a congressman for 10 years. Davis has returned blow for blow, with the result that the two candidates have been set apart from the rest of the field. Republican Lt. Gov. Warren P. Knowles 48, Rep. Alvin E. O'Konski of Mercer, 53, State Sen. Gerald D. Lorge of Bear Creek, Wis., 35; former Rep. John C. Schafer; and former State Supreme Court Justice Henry P. Hughes complete the field of GOP candidates. Democrat William Proxmire, 41, and Rep. Clement J. Zab locki, 44, nave directed their jibes at the Republicans and have discussed national and in ternational issues in their cam paigns. Their differences on is-1 sues appear to be slight, so the race between them is seen as a popularity contest.
