filter-Tip Smoking
A Waste of Money
Probe Chairman Says
Washington M The chair
man of the House subcommittee
which has just completed an in
vestigation of cigarette filters
said Saturday smokers "have
been wasting their money" buy
ing filter-type varieties.
Rep. John A. Blatnik (D-Minn.)
said snlokers "might Just as
well be smoking the old unfilt
ered cigarettes."
Just As flack Nicotine
Blatnik said his House sub
committee's inquiry showed that
smokers are getting Just as much
tar and nicotine from the new
filter-tip cigarettes as from the
regular-size plain-tip variety. But
he said smokers are paying close
to $200 million a year extra for
filter tips.
Moreover, he told the United
Press, advertisers have spent
hundreds of millions of dollars
during the last four years to
promote filter-tip cigarettes, but
smokers got a better tobacco
for less money with the old un
filtered variety.

tions subcommittee Friday con

king-lung cancer controversy
Blatnik said he believes "peo
ple will go on smoking" despite
reports that cigarette consump
tion is a cause of lung cancer.
But he expressed confidence a
"way out" can be found to give
them better health protection.
One way, he said, would be to
find some agent that would "neu
tralize" substances in tobacco
tars believed responsible for
causing lung cancer.
Another way, he added, would
be through use of tobacco pro
ducing less tars and development
of better filtering processes.

Takes on Six for
McCarthy's Post
Madison, Wis. Hfl A lone
"Eisenhower Republican" takes
on six conservative candidates in
next Tuesday's Wisconsin GOP
primary battle for the Senate
seat Joseph R. McCarthy made
famous.
Only two Democrats, both of
the Liberal wing of the party,
are contending for the right to
run the special election Aug. 27
to fill the vacancy left by Mc
Carthy's death last May.
Election officials predicted a
light turnout of voters, despite
the bumper crop of seven Re
publican candidates in a state
which the GOP has dominated
for years.
Former Gov. Walter J. Kohler,
53, is the only solid Eisenhower
supporter among the GOP cand
idates. He has charged his op
ponents with being Old Guard,

ist. Blow for Blow
Most of the three-time gov
ernor's thrusts have been aimed
at former Rep. Glenn R. Davis,
42, a congressman for 10 years.
Davis has returned blow for
blow, with the result that the
two candidates have been set
apart from the rest of the field.
Republican Lt. Gov. Warren

O'Konski of Mercer, 53, State
Sen. Gerald D. Lorge of Bear
Creek, Wis., 35; former Rep.
John C. Schafer; and former
State Supreme Court Justice
Henry P. Hughes complete the
field of GOP candidates.
Democrat William Proxmire,

have discussed national and in

popularity contest.

Russian Youths Greet
Foreign Delegates at
Moscow Celebration
Moscow W Pushing crowds
of Russian teen-agers Saturday
greeted thousands of foreign
delegates 50 of them Ameri
cans arriving at Moscow rail
road station for the opening of
the Moscow Youth festival.
The U. S. group formed the
largest single contingent of the
200 Americans scheduled to at
tend the two-week festival that
starts today.
Most of the Americans were
students but the group included
one Russian expert making the
trip for study purposes and one
insurance salesman.
Few Serious Delegates
Many apparently were "along
for the ride." Only about one
third were here as serious dele
gates. At previous festivals Am
ericans have attended only as
observers.
The Moscow Youth choir wel
comed the noon train carrying
American, English, Irish, Czech,
Hungarian and French youths.
More than one thousand Rus
sian youngsters stood on the
platform with flowers or out
stretched autograph books.
Outside the station Russian po
lice in a friendly mood had trou
ble keeping a path for the vis
itors through the mobs of on
lookers. American Arnold Spindler of
Los Angeles (no street address
available), bearded and carrying
a guitar, was a particular sub
ject for Soviet autograph hunt
ers and amateur photographers.
While he signed autographs, a
young Russian grabbed his guit
ar, with a small American flag
waving at one end of it, and
strummed a few chords.

Nasser Says Egypt
Not Being Subdued
Alexandria, Ekypt AB
Egyptian President Gamal Ab
del Nasser told thousands uf
cheering citizens here that the
United States and the West have
failed in attempts to starve Egypt
into submission.
He said Egypt with Syrian and
Russian help, "won the battle
against starvation and econom

out against the Anglo-French-Israeli
invasion last fall.
Nasser addressed some 180,
000 persons who gathered at

Square here -to celebrate the
fifth anniversary of the ouster
of former King Farouk. It was
at this same place and time
last year that Nasser announc
