July 28. 1957 The Medical Roundup by (r vr Hilt v ' Doctors' Offices Next To Hospitals At a recent meeting of the Tri-State Hospital Assembly in Chicago, Ray Brown of the Uni versity of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics said that the chances are that before long more and more doctors' buildings will be J put alongside of big hospitals f so that the physicians will not I have to spend time going back i n d forth as many now do. Also, around the hospital and the doc-v tors building there will have to be large parking places for the patients' cars. Today, people are bitter be cause so many doctors will not make house calls. Some doctors even hate to go to a hospital. The difficulty is that big cities have become so large that the problems of driving several miles and then finding a park ing place are too great. Six years ago, I moved from Ro chester, Minnesota, to a city of several million, I found that I could hardly afford to go to a hospital for a consultation, even if I was well-paid, because such a trip would take up most of a morning or an afternoon, and 1 1 couldn't afford to give up this I amount of time out of my day. In Rochester a city of 30,000 or so, I could walk from my office I to any one of the hospitals in from 5 to 10 minutes. Warmed-Over Dinner One of my colleagues, an able internist, whose day is filled with work, recently acceded to the urgent request of a friend. and agreed to .see his "s'ck father J in the father's home. The doctor I could not get away from his of fice until six o'clock. Then he had to walk several blocks to a garage and wait until an at tendant brought him his car. He drove through the city about seven miles south and spent 15 minutes hunting for an empty parking space. He spent 45 min utes going over the patient, writing prescriptions and tele phoning to three hospitals try ing to get a room for him. Then the family quizzed him for a while. He hunted up his car and then drove north 10 miles to his garage. From there he walked home, and about 9:20, sat down to a warmed-over din ner. When, later, his secretary sent a bill for S10 to the patient, he rose up in wrath and said he had been robbed. I can see his point, but .1 am just showing!
