In all but a few cases, the best thing they can do is to forget they have one or they should wish they had never heard the word. 'It is bad when a nervous woman tries to blame km m III EM all her annoy ances and aches and abo dominal d i s comforts and cons tipation on her spastic colon. My old Chief used to say, "Every s elf -respect-i n g nervous Dr Alvarez woman nas a spastic col, so why talk about it?" In my 25 years at the Mayo Clinic I never heard our x-ray men diagnosing a spastic colon. They knew too well that in most persons the large bowel on the left side tends, when empty, to contract down into a hard cord which can be felt like a piece of garden hose. This hardness of the contracted bowel is called spasticity. It is so normal that I am sure it is not the cause of the woman's pains and the formation of mucus in her bowel. I am sure that usually the mucus and much gas and fre quent bowel movements come when she is nervous and self- I conscious or worried and . anxious. For instance, a while ago I ; saw two young women who had j what was called a diarrhea that : their home doctors could not cure. Actually, I found the woman didn't have diarrhea: they were going too often to the toliet but passing only some gas with a little water and much mucus or slime. I just said "What's worrying you?" One said her husband was threaten ing to divorce her and if possible take the children: the other said her soldier husband in Korea had written he had fallen in love with a Korean girl. Dr. Alvarez hopes his readers will understand that it would be impossible for him to answer requests for information or to attempt to diagnose by mail. Neuhereer (D-Ore.) charged Thursday the Eisenhow-1 er administration and the Re publican party "betrayed the public interest" in pushing for defeat of the federal Hells Can yon Dam bill. But Eisenhower said in a let- ter to a GOP congressman that I he is "more convinced than ever" that private power de- velopment of Snake river on the i Idaho-Oregon border is "sound. The House Interior Committee killed the Hells Canyon Dam proposal 16 to 14 Wednesday. Eisenhower's letter, to Rep.
