Salvage Experts Recover Submarine From Harbor Depths Rabaul W Chinese and British salvage experts have succeeded in raising the first Japanese warship from the bot tom of Rabaul harbor and expect to tow the scrap-laden hulk to Hong Kong soon. The 8,000-ton submarine moth er ship Narula Maru was found to be in remarkable condition despite 14 years of lying half submerged in this former Jan- anese naval base in New Guinea. Alexander McCulloch, former Royal Navy salvage expert, said several human bones were found by divers in the flooded engine room of the vessel. The Naruta Maru was hit by areial bombs from American planes during the bombing of Rabaul in 1943 and finally suc cumbed to an aerial torpedo which blasted her stern. She is the first of nearly 100 rusting ships beached in and along the Rabaul harbor to be refloated. Deep Harbor Chief salvage officer M. A. Henry of Kowloon said five previous attempts had been made to float the Naruta. The Chinese divers worked nearly fix months before they were able to raise the vessel and make her seaworthy. Capt. McCulloch said it would be impossible to estimate the total tonage sunk in Rabaul harbor. Everything from land ing barges to an aircraft carrier were known to have been sunk during the five years the Jap anese based their South Pacific fleet here, but the great depth of the volcanic harbor probably will make it impossible to salv age most of these hulks. The Naruta was built especial ly for the Japanese navy in 1924, and operated as the mother ship and repair base for Japan's sub marine fleet in the South Pa cific. Her one-inch steel plating and unusually strong construc tion make her worth about $450, 000 in Hong Kong where she will be cut up. Henry estimated it would take The Hong Kong Salvage and Towing company about seven weeks to get the ship from Rabaul to Hong Kong.
