Sanford To As Win Pitches Boston Over Cardinals Team Tops Nationals By TIM MCRIARTY United Prats Sports Writtr Handsome Jack Sanlord, lg nored as a major league pro pect by the Boston Red Sox 10 years ago because he was too small, stood at least 10 feet tall today in the eyes of Philadel phia's pennant-smelling fans. The rooltie right hander from Wellesley, Mass., pitched the Phillies into first place in the National league Monday night by posting a five-hit, 6-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals It marked the first time the Phillies occupied the top rung of the N'L standings at this stage of the campaign since 1950. And nobody in Philadelphia has to be reminded that was the year the old Whiz Kids won the pen nant. This new group of Whiz Kids now has won 12 of its last 14 games, moving from fifth place on July 1 to its present eleva tion a half-game ahead of the Cardinals. Sanford has been the "big man" in this drive, allow ing only 15 hits while posting three straight complete game victories. Nibs Strikeout Leadership In raising his season won-and lost record to 12-2 Monday night against the Cardinals, Sanford took over the major league strikeout leadership by whiffing seven men. The blond, blue-eyed New Englander has totaled 111 strikeouts, one more than Early Wynn of the Cleveland Indians. The only St. Louis player who gave Sanford trouble was Alvin Dark. The veteran shortstop tripled in the fourth and scored on Stan Musial's sacrifice fly, then homered in the eighth to account for both St. Louis runs However, Willie Jones treated Sanford to a 2-0 lead in the sec ond inning with a two-run horn er and the Phillies chased Vine gar Bend Mizell in the third with a four-run burst, featured by Granny Hamner's two-run double. The Brooklyn Dodgers wal loped the Milwaukee Braves. 20-4, and the New York Giants whipped the Chicago Cubs, 5-3, In other NL action. The Wash ington Senators raced to a 10-3 victory over the Kansas City Athletics in the only American league game. fleal Homers Twice The Dodgers clubbed five Mil waukee pitchers for 16 hits, in cluding a pair of home runs by Charley Nea, in moving to with in two games of the lead. Duke Snider, Sandy Amoros and win ning pitcher Don Drysdale also homered for the Dodgers, who hustled to a 9-1 lead within four innings and then added a nine run burst in the eighth frame Willie Mays, whose 12th-in-ning home run crushed the Cubs Sunday, turned oh his Chicago "cousins" for the second straight day with a two-run circuit blow in the third inning that provided the Giants with their winning margin. Johnny Antonelli pick ed up his ninth victory, although he needed relief from Al Worth ington in the eighth inning. Don Mueller also homered for the Giants. Russ Kemmerer hit his first major league home run and scat tered 12 hits in pitching the Sen ators to their victory over the Athletics. Lou Berberct and Faye Throneberry also homered for Washington and Tim Thomp son clouted one for Kansas City. National League Chicago 003 000 000 3 10 1 New York .... 013 000 Olx S 7 1 Elston. By UNITED PRESS Smiles don't usually come easy to the manager of a last place team, but Manager Tommy Heath of the Sacramento Solons is beaming like a most happy fella. Most of the Pacific Coast League were romping past the half-mile post before the Solons cleared the starting gate, but now the dark horse from the California capital is off and running. It would take a miracle for the Solons to finish in the money, but second place Vancouver will agree that Tommy's gang can make it awfully rough on the front runners. Monday night, Sacramento opened a doubleheader with the Mounties by scoring their 11th victory in their last IS starts but then dropped the nightcap. The Solons won 7-0, and then lost. 6-2. The split gave Sacramento a 5-3 series edge of the Mounties, who trail league-leading San Francisco by only three games. Ippolito Beats Tom Salem Monday Nite New York Ufl Lightweight Frankie Ippolito, the Manhat tan College graduate who used mitts and mathematics to stop Tommy Salem Monday night, will get another TV fight at St. Nicholas Arena, Aug. 5. Promoter Teddy Brenner matched 23-year-old Ippolito to day with dangerous Johnny Busso of New York, who upset fifth-ranking Larry Boardman on June 28. Ippolito, weighing 139 pounds to 136 for Salem of Cleveland, floored Tommy twice and regis tered an upset technical knock out at 1:37 of the sixth round. Salem,, favored at 8-5, was bleeding from a cut on his left eyelid, but the bout was stopped because he had been beaten into helplessness on the ropes. "I changed my style last night," Frankie explained. "I used some very simple mathe matics the law of leverage and came down off my toes to punch flat-footedly for more power." 'Quiet' Jet Engine Claimed Developed Virginia City, Nev. (IP) The Curtiss-Wright Corp. has devel oped a "quiet" jet engine de signed to take the ear-splitting racket out of the commercial jet air travel of the future. The revolutionary new power plant, designed the TJ38 Zephyr, was developed jointly by the Wright Aeronautical Division and Bristol Aero Engines of England. Officials of Curtiss-Wright demonstrated the new engine Monday. The second big factor of the Zephyr is its thrust reverser, which enables the pilot to "throw the plane in reverse" much the same as the pilot of a conventional aircraft brakes by reversing the pitch of his propellors. Figures released today by league statistician William Weiss showed Roger Osenbaugh of Sacramento with 11 losses and an ERA of 4.39 while Bill Aber nathie of San Francisco had a 4.74 earned run average but had compiled a 9-1 record for the leading percentage. Explanation of this seeming paradox might rest in the fact that the Seals lead the league while Sacramento is in last place a couple dozen games off the pace. Luzon Head Hunting Activities Feared Manila HP) Manila constabu lary officials expressed fear to day that the rainy season had sparked head-hunting activities in northern Luzon. Last week a member of the head-hunting Ilongot tribe kill ed a Christian farmer in Quezon province and constabulary re ports said the killer must have taken the victim's head to pre sent to the parents of his intend ed bride as is the custom of the tribe. The report said the rainy sea son is an ideal mating season to the Ilongats. Maj. Alfonso A. At the same time a joint city county group announced it was appointing a business executive to get a "firm agreement" from O'Malley that he intends bring ing the Brooklyn club here. The New York ac count quoted a spokesman for O'Malley as saying he was "ex tremely interested" in the new site offer if it is made. Hahn declared he was reveal ing a recent request from O'Mal ley that Los Angeles should get the coliseum ready for use by the Dodgers next year because of the latest New York reports. The plan to appoint a promi nent business executive to con fer with O'Malley was disclosed by Mayor Norris Poulson and County Supervisor John Anson Ford. Verbal Agreement Hahn indicated that so far as he was concerned there was a verbal agreement and he doubt ed if the offer of a site was suf ficient to change O'Malley's mind. Poulson, however, took the New York story lightly, and declared. "I am not alarmed, let me put it that way." Meanwhile, San Francisco Mayor George Christopher told a press conference Monday that Ihe financial bnrden of pay-as-you-see television may keep the New York Giants and the Dodg ers away from the West coast.
