Democrats Move To Take Over Play On Tax Reductions Washington OP House Dem ocrats moved to grab the ball from the Eisenhower adminis tration on economizing and tax- cutting. Rejecting a fresh pronounce ment by the President that this is no time to cut taxes, the Dem ocrats planned to start hearings promptly on when and how to hand the public a tax reduction, But the Democrats view Ei senhower's r e c e n 1 1 y-disclosed slash-back spending order to gov ernment agencies as a prelude to a tax-cut recommendation, prob ably next January. Brundag Called The Democrats also sought to rob the administration of credit for economizing sufficiently to justify a tax cut. The House Appropriations Committee called Budget Direc tor Pervical F. Brundage to tes tify today on the President's order to government agencies to hold current spending wherever possible to last year's level. Chairman Clarence Cannon (D-Mo.) said the committee wanted to know what was be hind the order, how much Brun dage expected to save and what is to be done with the surplus. Cannon said the President's aim plainly was to pave the way for a claim next year that big savings had been made and taxes could be cut. Date of First Publication: June 25th. 1957. Bock Stairs: A Week nd With Grandma By PATRICIA WIGGINS United Press Correspondent Washington API Back stairs at the White House: For three of. the Eisenhower grandchildren, the President's participation in Operaton Alert provided a nice week end and with grandpa and grandma. David, 9, Barbara Anne, 8, and Susan, 5, had fun tromping around in the woods at the secret White House hideaway, - swim ming in a nearby pool and even being entertained with a movie before bedtime. The youngsters drove to the emergency White House with Mrs. Eisenhower, while the President made the trip by heli copter. The kids strolled by re porters who were busy at their typewritters recording the is suance of mock national emerg ency declarations. Who got to see the best movie at the hideaway Friday night? One film was run off in the main dining room for newsmen, White House staff and military personnel involved in the "evacuation." There were early 'reports that this would be a new Fred Astaire-Audrey Hepburn film. But after a projection screen was toted over to the Eisen hower quarters, that report de teriorated into a showing of a wartime naval episode which Equipment Arrives Laie for Jamboree (Editor's Note: Tha author of this article is one of 63 Cra ter Lake area Boy Scouts at tending the National Boy Scout Jamboree at Valley 4 Forge). Here we are at the Jamboree after a glorious trip across the United States. We just left Wash ington, DC, where we -visited all the memorials, statues and other places of interest. ' Our equipment arrived late on July 9 and we had trouble setting up camp. Wednesday, July 10, we visited the Phila delphia Navy yard, where the troops took a tour aboard a sub marine. We arrived back about 3 o'clock and spent the rest of the time straightening up and trading. - . Dick Schleichter, Gettysburg Country Club -pro, who gave both David and Barbara Anne golf lessions over the President's week end recess from Operation Alert, heads for the PGA tourna ment in Dayton, Ohio, this week. Well-liked Schleichter, who came in second in the Pennsyl vania Open last year, is one of only six who qualified for the $141,000 PGA touranment from the Philadelphia PGA section. With 128 in the field for the national title. Scheichter is hop ing that other contestants are pros at clubs where -they, like he, are too busy to play much golf themselves. But club mem bers aren't worried about their boy, the only person from Adams county ever to qualify for the PGA. Graham Committee Ponders Extension New York (IB The Execu tive Committee that runs Billy Graham's New York Crusade will meet late today to determine whether to extend the crusade an additional two or three weeks. A spokesman for Graham said the evangelist and the committee are praying over the matter to decide whether the Lord is lead ing them to extend the meet ings." If the crusade is extended, it would be the second time the Executive Committee has so acted. The crusade opened May 15 and was to have closed June 30, but was extended to July 20. Graham has called his crusade in New York "highly successful' and has outlasted and outdrawn every other attraction in the 30- year history of Madison Square Garden.
