o March of Dimes Total Receipts $44,034,000 New York The 1957 March of Dimes raised a total of $44, 034,000 last January for a con tinuing assault on polio and the lingering paralysis of thousands of its victims, Basil O'Connor, president of the National Foun dation for Infantile Paralysis an nounced today. O'Connor said that an impor tant part of the funds will be used to bring maximum rehabil itation to those scarred by para lystie polio in past years. The needs of this far-reaching pro gram will also be emphasized in the March of Dimes next Jan. 2-31, he added. "Years of research and the ex penditure of millions of dollars have given us a powerful victory weapon in Salic vaccine," he said, "but you Just don't walk off the battlefield and leave your wounded behind. Furthermore, we are pledged to keep down the ranks of newly wounded by seeing to it that every American under 40 seeks Salk vaccine pro tection." Why should she hang on to her husband? Jean F. We married for bet ter or worse. Martha D. My sister is an at tractive 45-year-old woman, who had the misfortune to have a serious mental breakdown not long ago. She was confined to a mental institution for a year but has now been discharged as completely cured. She appears to be more stable than she has ever been in her life. While Jean was away, her hus band took in a housekeeper, sup posedly to care for the home and their four children. I suspected from the first there was more to the relationship than that. It turns out I was right. My sister is now struggling to keep her husband. I am very much afraid the strain will be too much for her. I feel that I have won round one of my battle and I'm not ready to quit yet. When I came home, my husband said he felt that we should keep on the housekeeper because I was not yet able to take care of the chil dren. I agreed. As soon as I realized what the score was, however, I threw this woman out, bag and baggage. I know , my husband has been seeing her since and it tortures me, but I won't give up without a fight. I have now proved that I can take care of my own children without help. That should show my husband that I am also capable of being a real wife. I feel he must have lost confi dence in my ability to regain my health and that's what led him to act as he did. We married for better or for worse. He didn't stand by me, but that's no rea son for me to give him up. The Council Jean appears to be much sounder in her thinking, her feeling and her actions than most women would be in her situation. Stetson, a California consult ing water engineer, testified in the Colorado river water suit here that the current drought in Arizona's Gila river system is the most severe in 600 years. Stetson, of Fullerton, Calif., told Special Supreme Court Master Simon Rifkind that dur ing the past year he conducted a study of the "dependable yield" of water from the Gila system. The witness said that from a study, utilizing the science which reads the rings of trees, he calculated that the "drought which began in 1921 is the most severe drought in the Gila river system since the 13th Century." Wet, Dry Cycles Stetson also testified that the wet and dry cycles in the Gila area appear to last 50 years or more. Another witness. Dr. Frank J. Veihmeyer, testified that one of the most significant reasons for lowered runoff in the upper Gila river area is the lack of fire to burn off brushy growth. Veihmeyer, professor emeritus of irrigation at the University of California, Davis, said there had been "encroachment of brush-type vegetation on what was formerly grassland," which was caused by the "activity of man." Veihmeyer said that In his opinion, this encroachment and man's prevention of fires to burn it off "would decrease the run off" of the watershed. ivink?
