Receipts $44,034,000
New York The 1957 March
of Dimes raised a total of $44,
034,000 last January for a con
tinuing assault on polio and the
lingering paralysis of thousands
of its victims, Basil O'Connor,
president of the National Foun
dation for Infantile Paralysis an
nounced today.
O'Connor said that an impor
tant part of the funds will be
used to bring maximum rehabil

needs of this far-reaching pro

in the March of Dimes next Jan.

"Years of research and the ex

have given us a powerful victory
weapon in Salic vaccine," he
said, "but you Just don't walk
off the battlefield and leave your
wounded behind. Furthermore,
we are pledged to keep down
the ranks of newly wounded by
seeing to it that every American

Jean F. I feel that I have
won round one of my battle and
I'm not ready to quit yet. When I
came home, my husband said he
felt that we should keep on the
housekeeper because I was not
yet able to take care of the chil

As soon as I realized what the
score was, however, I threw this

me, but I won't give up without

I have now proved that I can

my husband that I am also

feel he must have lost confi

Thanks to the miracles of frozen foods and prepared mixes, the modern
housewife can bake a cherry pie or concoct a whole meal "quick as a
cat can wink its eye."
Bui what does she do with the time she lava ? Just take care of three or
four kids, makes slip-covers and drapes, acts as family chauffeur and
nurse, does the washing and ironing, entertains her husband's hoes
probably helps out at the local hospital or maybe serres as Den Mother
for ten husky, unruly Cub Scouts.
i
And she does even morel Chances are she acts as family purchasing agent
and bookkeeper. And her family's financial standing depends as much
upon her ability to budget and save money as it doe on her husband's
ability to earn it.
That's why so many women today are helping their husbands get started
on a regular savings program in U.S. Series E Savings Bonds. Everybody
no nil to save, but modern women face the fact that few people can do it
on a hit or miss basis. The secret of saving is system, and one of the
easiest systems to follow is for the family breadwinner to buy Bonds
through the Payroll Savings Plan. Once a wage earner signs up for this
plan where he works, his money is automatically saved for him in safe

Help your family win financial security by encouraging yonr husband to

Engineer Says Gila
Area Drought Worst
Since 13th Century
San Francisco (TPt Thomas
M. Stetson, a California consult
ing water engineer, testified in
the Colorado river water suit
here that the current drought
in Arizona's Gila river system is
the most severe in 600 years.
Stetson, of Fullerton, Calif.,
told Special Supreme Court
Master Simon Rifkind that dur
ing the past year he conducted
a study of the "dependable
yield" of water from the Gila
system.
The witness said that from a
study, utilizing the science
which reads the rings of trees,
he calculated that the "drought
which began in 1921 is the most
severe drought in the Gila river
system since the 13th Century."
Wet, Dry Cycles
Stetson also testified that the
wet and dry cycles in the Gila
area appear to last 50 years or
more.
Another witness. Dr. Frank J.
Veihmeyer, testified that one of
the most significant reasons for
lowered runoff in the upper Gila
river area is the lack of fire to
burn off brushy growth.
Veihmeyer, professor emeritus
of irrigation at the University
of California, Davis, said there
had been "encroachment of
brush-type vegetation on what
was formerly grassland," which
was caused by the "activity of
man."
Veihmeyer said that In his
opinion, this encroachment and
man's prevention of fires to burn
it off "would decrease the run
off" of the watershed.
