A resume of the National Junior Chamber of Commerce was given by nation al director, Ron James of Med ford. He recently attended the national convention in Mil waukee, Wis. Jaunita Sutton was named chairman of a committee to work at the concession stands during the Jaycee carnival July 26 and 27. Cohostesses were Mrs. John Smock. Mrs. Lee Collinsworth. Mrs. Melvin Frick and Mrs. Bill Colley. Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Downing and Mr. and Mrs. Chet Lengele made a trip last week end to Fort Klamath and to Crater lake and Diamond lake. July 10. The occasion was In honor of Mrs. Taylor's birthday. Mrs. Taylor and Mrs. Greenman are sisters. Don Johnson, who is a mid shipman third class in the Navy, is on a special cruise to South America. His mother, Mrs. Helen Johnson, recei"ed a letter from him from Panama saying they would dock at Valparaiso, Chile. Visiting at the Wendell Panter home last week end were Pant er's sister, Mrs. Fern Haskell, and her daughter, Jeanie, of Portland. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Wil liams, former Central Point resi dents now living in La Puente, are moving to Whittier. Wil liams, who has been the assist ant manager at the J. J. New berry store at La Puente, has been promoted to manager of the store at Whittier. Wesley Ellis suffered a broken wrist July 10 while stacking bales of hay in a barn. The hay hook slipped, causing him ' to fall from the top of the pile. Mrs. R. B. Mr. and Mrs. John Croskell and sons, Sammy and Doug, and D. A. Atwell went on a fishing trip last week end to Hiatt lake. Recent guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Downing were Mr. and Mrs. Art Frier nt MrMinnville who were on their way to San Jose where Frier will attend school. Mr. and Mrs. Frier teach in the McMinn- ville schools. Mrs. Frier is Mrs. Doning's sister. The Rev. Lewis Collins and family took their house trailer and left for the Missionary al liance summer camp at Canby, Ore. The Rev. and Mrs. Al Motes are home after a three months visit to Palatka, Fla., where they visited Mr. Motes' father and other relatives. A combination class picnic and stork shower 'as held Tues day evening at TouVelle park. The shower was in honor of Mrs. Leroy Asher. The classes repre sented were the King's Messen gers and the Overcomers. About 50 people attended. Karen Johnson and Jerry Adams attended the water page ant at Bend last week. Mr. and Mrs. Hilton Brignal have sold their home on Maple st. and will move into their new home. An all-day meeting was held at the home of Mrs. Clinton Charley by the Central Point "Dough Nuts." The purpose was to practice "brownie" baking in which they will compete at the county fair. Girls present at the meeting were Carol Foote, presi dent, Elaine Young; secretary, Kathy Thompson, Judy Frink, Karen Hunter, Mike Charley and Patsy Charley. Carnes, 47, of Tulsa, Okla., who was charged with stealing a Stradivarius violin valued at $3,500, apparently doesn't appreciate the finer things in life. Police said he sold the violin for $5. Josephine County Waler Resources 1 Leader Appointed Grants Pass Gene L. Brown, Grants Pass attorney and former state senator, is chairman of the newly appointed J o s e p h 1 ne County Water Resources com mission, Josephine county com missioners have announced. Others on the board and the committees which they head are E. C. (Ted) Coates, domestic and municiple water use; Victor Boehl, irrigation; W. J. Moyer, power; Sidney Bazett, indus trial use of water; William F. Johnson, minning; Henry Hath away, recreation; George Baker, wildlife; Hugh Moulton, fish life, and Ben Hilton, flood con trol. Gather Information Members of the commission will gather information on var ious aspects of the Rogue River basin water, reclamation and flood control problems, it was explained. The new commission will meet at Grants Pass Monday with Quentin Bowman, representative of the Oregon State Water Re sources board. The Josephine county court will act as hosts. Bowman is expected to out line information which the state board will need. He also is expected to help advise com mission mem bers as to their work. Forecasts of Needs Each of the nine committees will work out forecasts of water needs in the various classes of water use for the next 25 years. A tenth group may be added to study stream pollution, it was explained. Recommendations will prob ably be made by the state water resources board following hear ings in the Josephine county area and in Curry county. The recommendations will be made to the 1959 session of the state legislature, and are expected to determine what dams or other structures are to be built for Rogue River flood control and water use purposes. July 12, 1857 ' MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE SEVEH Public Health Service Sees Definite Link Between Cigarettes and Cancer Washington W The U.S. Public Health Service said to day there is "Increasing and con sistent evidence" that "exces sive" cigarette smoking is one of the factors which can cause lung cancer. Surgeon General Leroy E. Burney said studies have "con firmed beyond a reasonable doubt that there is a high degree of statistical association between lung cancer and heavy prolong ed cigarette smoking." He issued the statement after the Public Health Service com pleted a review of the report of a study group on smoking and heplth, which found a "direct relationship between the Inci dence of lung cancer and the amount smoked." Strongest Government Comment It was the strongest statement the government has made to date on the subject. Burney said copies, along with scientific findings, are be ing sent to state health officers and the American Medical As sociation together with the re quest that they consider distri bution of copies to health officers, medical societies and other health groups." The health service made no specific recommendations as to what the public should do in the light of its statement. A spokesman said "putting the facts before the public is as far as we can go at this time." A spokesman for the U.S. to bacco industry said Burney's statement "adds nothing new to what has been known about the cause of lung cancer." They are expected to be completed about the middle of August. Mrs. Marvin Williams and grandson, Michael, of 209 Church st., plan to spend the week end visiting Williams' son. Thomas E. (Tommy) Williams, who is with the National Guard at Ft. Ord, Calif. Open house is being held there this week end. They will go from Ft. Ord to San Jose where they will visit a sister of Mrs. Williams, Mrs. Byrda Carr and son. Marvin Williams, who is now working near Fresno, is expect ed home about July 21 for a two weeks vacation. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Jaecker and children of New York City have returned home after visit ing her mother, Mrs. Nan Coats, for a week. They are touring the west during their vacation and Mrs. Coats went with them to Idaho where she visited relatives in Weiser, Payette, Ontario and Boise. They flew to San Fran cisco and will fly back from Denver. Mrs. Jaecker is the for mer Mildred Coats and attended Phoenix schools. Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Sigler of Tacoma have been spending the past two weeks visiting the Ted Mitchell family, the Thomas Mit chell family, and the Donald and Wallace Mitchell families Friday night Mrs. Ted Mitchell will be hostess to a birthday party given for Mrs. Sigler. Diablo Test Shot Delayed 24 Hours Las Vegas, Nev. III) The Atomic Energy commission hat postponed its much-delayed Dia blo test shot for at least 24 hours for technical reasons. The nominal nuclear blast in the summer series had been set for today. The AEC late Thurs day rescheduled the shot to be fired atop a 500-foot ower ten tatively for Thursday at 4:30 a.m. (PDT) and reported further delays were possible. It was the Diablo shot that did not go off as scheduled June 28 because of a power failure. Five scientists risked death to disarm the dud.
