Public Health Service Sees Definite
Link Between Cigarettes and Cancer
Washington W The U.S.
Public Health Service said to
day there is "Increasing and con
sistent evidence" that "exces
sive" cigarette smoking is one
of the factors which can cause
lung cancer.
Surgeon General Leroy E.
Burney said studies have "con
firmed beyond a reasonable
doubt that there is a high degree
of statistical association between
lung cancer and heavy prolong
ed cigarette smoking."
He issued the statement after
the Public Health Service com
pleted a review of the report of
a study group on smoking and
heplth, which found a "direct
relationship between the Inci
dence of lung cancer and the
amount smoked."
Strongest Government Comment
It was the strongest statement
the government has made to date
on the subject.
Burney said copies, along
with scientific findings, are be
ing sent to state health officers
and the American Medical As
sociation together with the re
quest that they consider distri
bution of copies to health
officers, medical societies and
other health groups."
The health service made no
specific recommendations as to
what the public should do in
the light of its statement. A
spokesman said "putting the
facts before the public is as far
as we can go at this time."
A spokesman for the U.S. to
bacco industry said Burney's
statement "adds nothing new to
what has been known about the
cause of lung cancer."
