BLM Starts Work on Plan for 1958 Sales The Medford office of the bu reau of land management has an nounced that work is beginning on the 1358 calendar year tim ber sale plan for O and C and public domain lands within the district. Representatives of the forest uons and nave ample oppor tunity to examine each tract and participate in the bidding. The deadline for receiving suggestions from prospective purchasers for consideration in next year's plan has been set as Aug. 15. 1957. The district for- ir.duslry w ho w ish to suggest i ester urged everyone interested specific tracts of timber for con-' in having specific tracts of BLM sideration should contact the dis trict office in the Medford city hall for necessary forms and in formation. The bureau is espe cially interested in suggestions involving salvage timber, ac cording to District Forester E. K. Peterson. The district forester and his iitaff prepare the plan on the basis of the volume of timber which can be sold under scien tific Sustained yield manage ment. They also consider the manpower available in the or ganization to prepare for and supervise timber sales, the ne cessity for sound forest manage ment practices and the interest rhasers for specific tracts. RTiwed by Supervisor The plan as proposed by the district forester is reviewed by the state supervisor of the bu reau and by the district advisory board and any necessary changes made before it is finally adopted and announced. The sale plan will include only old growth or salvage timber and the tracts will be well dis tributed throughout the district. No timber will be advertised un less the bureau can assure equal access to all prospective pur chasers. This Is the ninth year that the bureau has prepared a plan in which the location, estimated volume and proposed time of sale for each tract of timber pro posed for sale during the coming year is announced to the public in advance. By such advance announcement, the forest indus try can better plan then fpera- timber advertised for sale in 1958 to make their suggestions early so bureau foresters can start making the field examinations. Lake Creek Man Injured in Accident John Franklin ftlingle, 49, Lake Creek, was hospitalized with head and leg injuries Wed nesday night after the horse he was riding was struck by a car on McAllister-Soda Springs rd. In the Lake Creek area. State police said Klingle and his son were driving cattle east on the road when a vehicle op erated by John Harmon Fox, 20, Lake Creek approached from subsequently at the advertised Ross Lumber Low Bidder on Timber In BF District Ross Lumber company, Med ford, was high bidder Monday for 11,300,000 board feet of tim ber in the Rogue River National forest, according to Supervisor Carroll E. Brown. Ross' bid was $123,750. Next -high bidder was Steve Wilson of Trail. Consolidated Timber of Medford also submit ted a bid. Appraised price of the timber was S105.510. The tract is in the Butte Falls district and is known as the Black Bear sale. Brown said the relatively low price for such a large tract of timber is due to its inaccessibil ity. Road Construction He said the purchaser will be required to build eight miles of road in addition to paying for the timber at the bid price. The forest service estimate the cost of constructing the required road is SI 38,000. The timber sale con tract specifies the standard of the required road. Engineering work for the road is being done by the forest service. Ross Lumber company oper ates a band mill at Prospect and a dry kiln, planer, and shipping facilities at White City. Some of the timber will also go to the gang mill operated by their affiliate, Olson-Ross Lumber company, at White City. Brown stated that two pre viously offered tracts of timber! received no bid. These were the Hanley Gulch sale, 5,300,000 j board feet on the Applegate dis trict; and the Ash Swale sale. ' 3,100.000 board feet on the Butte Falls district. The Ash Swale offering was purchased i the opposite direction. Accord ing to officers. Fax was unable to stop his car and drove into a ditch. Klingle had "jumped" his horse into the same ditch and the car struck the animal, knocking Klingle under the veh icle. Klingle was taken by Medford Ambulance service to Sacred Heart hospital, where attend ants reported his condition as "fairly good" this morning. He Is not permitted to have visitors at this time, the hospital re ported. Police cited Fox for having defective brakes. Fox was not Injured and damage to the car was reported minor. There no report as to the extent of the horse's injuries, police said. The accident occurred at 6:48 p.m. Henpecked Husbands Problem Drinkers Los Angeles W Municipal Judge Robert Clifton says that henpecked husbands top the list of problem drinkers who pass in an endless parade through Los Angeles courts. Clifton, whose court handles an average of 99.000 Jrunk cases annually, Wednesday at the an nual Institute for Scientific Studies for the Prevention of Alcoholism listed the "types" of drinkers who get into trouble. Besides henpecked husbands the list included: "Wives who are not appreci ated by their husbands: job hat ers who think they have missed the boat their great chance in' life; the guy who spends more than he makes; and the. person who has an inferiority complex." price by Elder Logging company of Shady Cove. FBI Files Sought in Integration Hearing Knoxville, Tenn. (IP De fense attorneys for 16 men charged with hindering the inte gration of Clinton, Tenn., high school were expected today to renew their efforts to examine the secret FBI files on the case. The defense Wednesday suc ceeded in obtaining one docu ment from the government's pre trial, investigative reports, but Federal District Judge Robert L. Taylor refused a motion to turn over the ' entire file on the grounds that the motion was "premature." The government opened Its contempt of court case against segregationist John Kasper and 15 Tennesseeans Wednesday, but the third witness called to the stand was almost forgotten in the turmoil touched off by de fense requests for the FBI files.
