IX MEDTORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Wednesday, July 10, 1937 Officer Testifies To Vice Payments Portland (W A young policeman testified Tuesday that he had taken various sums of money on five occasions from his superior officer. The policeman said the money was paid him by Sgt. Robert W. Sprague and that he understood it came from three gambling and vice houses in the Williams ave nue district. Sprague is on trial on a charge of false swearing in denying to a Multnomah county grand jury that he made payments to Olsen. Olsen testified the defendant gave him sums totaling $160 some of which he said was split with another officer. He display ed marked bills and coins which he said were marked at the time of the payoffs and were kept as evidence. The defense, in cross-examination, sought to break down Ol sen's claim that he "wanted to put an end to vice." Olsen testi fied that contacts he had with women of questionable char acter were in line of duty. Cross examination continued today. Cat Goes Along On Family Outing Portland IW Mr. and Mrs. Robert Burgess and their four children couldn't find their cat Tuesday mornmg when they started out on an all-day outing to the Breitenbush area. They figured the eight-month-old Siamese had wandered off to a neighbors. They went to Breitenbush for a picnic, fishing and a day of leisure. Then they drove home. Upon arrival, a neighbor child called to Mrs. Burgess "there's your kitty;" The cat. Panda, was 'creep ing and limping" along, Mrs. Burgess said. She was covered with tar. Later, Burgess took a flash light and looked under the auto mobile. They found cat hair stuck to tar-and-pebbles in a space under the right fender. The young cat had ridden the entire trip under the car. Mrs. Burgess said she didn't know why the cat didn't climb out at Breitenbush but that maybe it was too scared. Myrtle Creek Girl Drowns in Umpqua Myrtle Creek OH Mary MelaDee Milsap, 10, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Milsap, of Myrtle Creek, drowned Tuesday afternoon in the South Umpqua river about three miles north of here. Douglas county coroner L. L. Powers said the girl was swim ming with her sister and four other girls. She was pulled from the water by Eldon Naas and Junior Cavenar, both of Mrytle Creek. Powers said the Myrtle Creek fire department was called but the girl failed to revive by resu scitator methods. Controls on Trucks Regulate Signals Newark, N.J. W Fire men here are using electronic controls on their trucks to reg ulate traffic signals while on the way to a fire. Radio controls giving the driv ers of three officers' cars and six fire engines control of 15 key traffic signals have been in stalled. As the vehicles approach the intersection the drivers throw a switch that sends beams ahead either turning red lights to green or maintaining greens as such. The beams also will turn on red blinkers set atop traffic sig nal stanchions. A pistol shooting New Mexico motorist, Charles Dorsey Davis of Clovis, paid a $100 fine Tuesday in Meade county justice court for using his gun to express his feelings about women drivers Davis leaped from his car Sunday night in front of a car load of women and fired three slfots from his pistol into the ground. Later he was arrested at a roadblock. A car had been trailing him closely on U. S. Highway 54 Davis said, and when he pulled off on a side road the driver started sounding her horn. He feared he was about to be a rob bery victim, he said. The three women in the car said they started honking be cause Davis was blocking the road into which they desired to turn. Schrunk Bribery Charge Dismissed Portland HTI A charge of bribery against Mayor Terry Schrunk was dismissed Tuesday. Circuit Judge James W. Craw ford dismissed the charge upon recommendation of Attorney General Robert Y. Thornton. Schrunk recently was found in nocent on a perjury charge in connection with the same inci dent. Also dismissed were two char ges against Clifford Orban Ben nett, former manager of. the 8212 Club, involving the same incident. Another indictment against Policeman Richard Sut ter charging perjury also was dismissed. Checkups Scheduled For State-Owned Cars Salem TP) A mechanical preventive maintenance program is being 'put into effect on all new stale-owned passenger veh icles, Pinance Director John Richardson said today. The program consists of a com plete comprehensive mechanical checkup, and tuneup service each 10,000 miles. About 2,000 vehicles will, eventually be in cluded in the program, many of which will receive the service from private shops. The remain der will be worked on in exist ing stale shops such as those operated by the highway and forestry departments and the state motor pool.
