Officer Testifies
To Vice Payments
Portland (W A young
policeman testified Tuesday that
he had taken various sums of
money on five occasions from
his superior officer.
The policeman said the money
was paid him by Sgt. Robert W.
Sprague and that he understood
it came from three gambling and
vice houses in the Williams ave
nue district.
Sprague is on trial on a charge
of false swearing in denying to
a Multnomah county grand jury
that he made payments to Olsen.
Olsen testified the defendant
gave him sums totaling $160
some of which he said was split
with another officer. He display
ed marked bills and coins which
he said were marked at the time
of the payoffs and were kept as
evidence.
The defense, in cross-examination,
sought to break down Ol
sen's claim that he "wanted to
put an end to vice." Olsen testi
fied that contacts he had with
women of questionable char
acter were in line of duty. Cross
examination continued today.
Cat Goes Along
On Family Outing
Portland IW Mr. and Mrs.
Robert Burgess and their four
children couldn't find their cat
Tuesday mornmg when they
started out on an all-day outing
to the Breitenbush area.
They figured the eight-month-old
Siamese had wandered off
to a neighbors.
They went to Breitenbush for
a picnic, fishing and a day of
leisure. Then they drove home.
Upon arrival, a neighbor child
called to Mrs. Burgess "there's
your kitty;"
The cat. Panda, was 'creep
ing and limping" along, Mrs.
Burgess said. She was covered
with tar.
Later, Burgess took a flash
light and looked under the auto
mobile. They found cat hair
stuck to tar-and-pebbles in a
space under the right fender.
The young cat had ridden the
entire trip under the car. Mrs.
Burgess said she didn't know
why the cat didn't climb out at
Breitenbush but that maybe it
was too scared.

a switch that sends beams ahead
either turning red lights to green
or maintaining greens as such.
The beams also will turn on

Many bus accideents continue
to be reported. That's not sur
prising. Have you ever taken
notice of the driver of a one man
bus at work. He collects fares,
makes change, issues transfers,
answers all kinds of questions
and is constantly opening and
shutting doors. No wonder he
grows weary and 'in bad shape
to navigate through city traffic.
The one man bus is a dangerous

Try Again
A distinguished member of
the "Try, Try Again Club" is
the British Jockey Sir Gordon
Richards. He rode in 27 Epsom
Derbys and was 50 years old, on
his 28th try before he had a

rode Pinza in the 1953 running
of the Classic. On the other hand
Jockey Lester Piggot, now only
21 years old, has already ridden
two Epsom Derby winners. And
so it goes.
