July 3, 1257 No Inquest Planned In International Society Girl's Death Montmollin, Switzerland W Swiss officials said today they planned no inquest into the death of Joanne Coniclley Ortiz Patino. the international society beauty whose marital troubles made headlines for four years. The 26-year-old twice-married former cover girl was found dy ing of a heart attack early Tues day in her villa. She died soon after a Roman Catholic priest administered the last rites of the church. No Investigation Planned Informed sources said no in vestigation was planned because she had been ill for some time. The sources said she had been treated twice at a Lausanne Hospital for heart trouble, caused by taking overdoses of reducing pills. Joanne, a New York debu tante of the 1948 season whose beautiful face appeared on many magazine covers, was married first to millionaire socialite golf er Robert Sweeny in Marcn, 1949. in a Palm Beach ceremony where she was escorted by rail road tycoon Robert Young. She made her first interna tional headlines in 1953 when Sweeny divorced her on grounds of adultery with playboy diplo mat Porfirio Rubirosa. Intended To Visit Children She had intended to visit New York next week to see her two daughters who are in Sweeny's custody. In 1954 she married Jaime Ortiz Patino, heir to a billion dollar Bolivian tin fortune. Their life together lasted only 49 days and was followed by three years of suits and countersuits across Europe and blazing headlines throughout the world. She died just before a Swiss court was to hand down a final divorce decree in a scandal proof end to the charges of nar cotics addiction, cruelty, defam ation of character and libel. ILLINOIS VALLEY Last Scout Meeting Held BY HELEN BOTTEL " Cave Junction Last formal meeting of the summer season was held Thursady night by Boy Scouts of troop 20 and their leaders. Scoutmaster Gene Pul ley left Tuesday for the Valley Forge Scout Jamboree, and 19 of the troop will spend a week at Camp McLoughlin from July 21-28. Aside from troop swims and their camp-fund project of wuid shield washing at the Frontier drive-in theatre, the boys will not get together again for their weekly sessions until Septemb er. During June, films on swim ming and life saving, provided by the Air Force, were shown at the Thursday meetings. At Thursday's meet Bob E1I strom and Bob White received their first class neckerchiefs and slides. , Both boys won their first class awards in other troops. Young Ellstrom is from Bend, White from Medford. Jim Burch passed his Morse code tesand will qu9lify for his first class pin during camp this summer. Gary Wayne is the name chosen for the new son in the Harlan Renfro family. The baby was born June 24. Mr. and Mrs. Luther Sherier spent the weekend of June 22 in Portland where they visited their sons Donald Paul and Paul's family. Deputy Sheriff Les Tythcott gave a demonstration on artific ial respiration at the meeting of O'Brien volunteer firemen last week. Terry Spitz of Van N u y s, Calif., is spending the summer with his gTandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Spitz at Wish-U-Well motel. Roy Watson, formerly of O' Brien, and at present ui charge of the Benton California Ag ricultural Inspection station, has been transferred to the new Cal ifornia Department of Agricul ture station at Twenty-Nine Palms in southern California. Lurches Into Table A guest inspired by too many glasses of champagne lurched forward in the celebrity pavilion of the huge amusement park Todd took over as part of the ballyhoo and fell against a table where Miss Taylor was sitting. The table struck her heavily in the stomach and the dazzling brunette beauty screamed 1 in pain and fear. The baby is ex pected in October. Singer Eddie Fisher and his wife, Debbie Reynolds, rushed to the actress' side and sum moned Todd. Todd threshed his way through the most extraordinary list of celebrities gathered here in years, took in the situation at a glance and grabbed the man responsible. He pushed him to the edge of the lake in the cen ter of London's Coney Island the Festival Gardens of Batter sea shaking with fury. Todd Controls Self It looked for a moment as though Todd were going to hit the offender, but the producer confined himself to gripping the man's shoulders. "My wife is pregnant," he choked out the words. "Will you please be a gentleman." A few minutes later Miss Tay lor had completely recovered and was holding court at a table which included Sir Laurence Oliver and Vicien Leigh; Dun can Sandys, defense minister and son-in-law of Sir Winston Churchill: former attorney gen eral Sir Hartley Shawcross. the Maharajah of Jaipur and other dignitaries. GOLD HILL Scouts To See Slides By MRS. CLYDE KELL Gold Hill Color slides will be shown at the regular meeting of the newly-organized Explorer Post 43, Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Juy 3, in the Scout hall on Fourth ave. Guests are welcome. The slides will show the activi ties of an Explorer Post in New York. Plans will be made at this meeting, to attend the Fourth of July display, which is spon sored by the YMCA in Medford. The last regular meeting was held June 26. At that time plans were made for the swimming party, which was held at Haw thorne park in Medford Friday evening. June 28. The boys and their guests were accompanied by the Explorer advisor Robert Schmidt on this outing. Mrs Robert Schmidt took sev eral boys, who had qualified by attendance at the meetings, to the Water-Ski championships at Gardener lake 'on Saturday morning, June 29. Meetings of this Post are held each Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Scout hall. area. Blevins was a retired fore man of the railroad. Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Blevins were accompanied from San Francisco by his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur P. Blevins. Russell Doran returned early this week from a busines trip to southern California. The first complete reunion for Mrs. Harry Causey's immediate family in 40 years took place when two brothers and a sister and their families gathered at the Causey home in Broken Ket tle canyon near the state line, last week. The Illinois Valley 4-H Live stock club met at the home of Mike Nicholson last Tuesday. A demonstration of showmanship given by Mike. Next meet ing will be at the Nicholson it July 9. , Dave Webb, 88, was fined $25 an4 costs in Illinois Valley Just ice court last week on charges of starting a fire on forest land Without a permit. Webb caused a small forest fire in the Mud Springs area hile a 1 1 e mpting to send up smoke signals1 for help Hewas camping alone near his mine when he became ill. He is now recuperating at the Montgomery Ranch rest home near Selma. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Hal brook sister and brother-in-law of Mrs. Ronald Lewis, left re cently for their home in Salem, Mo., after spending a week at the Lewis home. Elwood Hussey has bought the Valley B o o k k e e ping Service building next to the Bank if Il linois Valley and has moved it to a . newly-cleared area three blocks west of Redwood avenue. Amelia Dick, owner of the bookkeeping service, is now in her new location next to the state liquor slore. Daisy Thompson, of Portland, associated Grand matron, con ducted a school of instruction for officers and members of Western Star Chapter No. 64, Order of Eastern Star, at the Masonic hall in Kerby Saturday, June 22. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Cribb of Kerby celebrated their 20th wed' ding anniversary June 25 with a dinner party at Oregon Caves chateau. They were married at the Caves in 1937 and have re turned almost every year since that time for their anniversary remembrance. Visiting Mr. and Mrs. Walter Freeman for the summer is their two-year old gran dson Stevie Stevens, son of Mr. and Mrs. Erroll Stevens of Portland. Mrs. Stevens, the former Becky Freeman, is nursing at the Portland Veterans' hospital. Former residents of the valley. Mr. and Mrs. Harmon Coving ton, left last week for an extend ed plane trip to the South Sea Islands. Meeting date for the Eagles and Auxiliary has been changed during the summer months to the first and third Saturdays of each month. The groups formerly met on Thursday. Mrs. Oakley Summers, of Kla math Falls, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Phayo Pfefferle of Cave Junction, was among 32 cadets who received commissions as probationary second lieutenants in the Salvation Army at the San Francisco Opera house June 18. Receiving his degree from Eastern Oregon college at La- Grande in June was Guy Hunt, son of Harry Hunt, now of Grants Pass. Hunt formerly oper ated a mill in the O'Brien area. White HEARING AIDS 131 East Main Medford, Oregon Phone or Write for FREE DEMONSTRATION in Your Home SP 3-1841 Umatilla Chief's Son Found Dead in Jail Pendleton (IB Dave Cowapoo, 46, a son of a former chief of the Umatilla Indian tribe and a member of the res ervation here, was found dead Tuesday morning in the Athena city jail, after he collapsed on an Athena street. According to Umatilla county coroner Pat Folsom here, Cow apoo had been taken to the city jail, and was scheduled to attend a court hearing when he was pronounced dead. The body was returned here, where an autopsy was to be performed. Dedication services for the Christian church were held at p.m. Sunday, June 30. The program, which consisted of special music, was opened with a piano prelude by Mrs. Irven Ackley of Central Point. Following the prelude Mrs. Ack ley and her daughter, Miss Wanda Ackley sang a duet, and solo was sung by Mrs. Dexter Williams of Medford. The dedicatory address was given by George Andrews ot Ashland, and the dedicatory prayer was presented by Dexter Williams, minister of the Cen tral Avenue. Church of Christ in Medford. The Irven Ackley, Dexter Wil liams and George Andrews fam lies were all former residents of Gold Hill. Vistors at the services were present from Grants Pass, Phoe nix, Ashland and Medford. i 'Memory of October," an oil painting recently completed by Mrs. Ada Andrews of the Upper River road, is now on display at the Truck cafe on Second ave nue.. Gold Hill. This picture was started fol lowing a meeting of the Ame thyst Rebekah lodge in Febru ary, when Mrs. Andrews pre sented a demonstration on oil painting. Several local people were interested in seeing the scene when it was completed. Road Worker Killed By Backing Truck Aloha, Ore. OB James C. Brookings, 67, Portland, was killed while at work with a road building crew Tuesday when he was run over by a backing as phalt truck here. Brookings had been spreading cooled asphalt on the road and the truck was backing up to spread some more. Linn Milton, Mr. and Mrs. Phillips' granddaughter also of Grants Pass, spent a week recent ly at the Phillips' trailer house in Cave Junction. Another local motel changed hands recently when Melvin Gray of Sunnyvale, Calif., pur chased the Town and Country motel south of Cave Junction from Bonnie Kollmer. The new owner, who has been visiting at the Bob Holloway home in Selma, will take over around July 15. Bud Kaufman and Duane Cross have completed a new road into the High Plateau region above O'Brien, opening up the H. W. Miller chrome mine to heavy hauling. Low grade ore will be mined by Kaufman and Cross and mil led by Walter Freeman. Ray H. Brewer, salutatorian of his Illinois Valley high school graduating class, is one of 124 Oregon high school seniors to receive a scholarship to Oregon State college this fall. The scholarships, sponsored by the state system of higher educa tion, are worth S138 each. Brewer, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Brewer of Selma, plans to major in engineering. He was winner of the Bausch and Lomb Scienre medal in May- Daily's U-Drive Medford Airoort H. D. Force and Don Morrow returned Sunday evening from a fishing trip on the Sakin river near Bly, Ore. Fishing was re ported to be good. Mrs. Maybelle Rains was sur prised on her birthday June 26, when a group of friends gathered for a coffee klatoh in her honor at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Cogswel at 9 a.m. Present were Mrs. Harry Newn- ham, Mrs. Lester Parker, and Stanley Newnham. Mr. and Mrs. Linsley Dotson and daughter, Pamela, of On tario, Calif., drove up to visit with his mother, Mrs. Rains, on her birthday. They were house guests at the home of his grandmother, Mrs. George Dorman, while they were in Gold Hill. They also visited in Medford with . his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Goodman and daughter, Debbie, and Miss Barbara Rains, another sister. 'Paper Sack' Bandit Robs Service Station Portland w A "paper sack" bandit held up a service station here Tuesday night. It was the 10th such holdup here since May 7 and police said they believed all were the work of the same bandit. The robber fled on foot with an undetermined amount of cash from Roy's Richfield sta tion in southwest Portland. Police said he used the same method as in the past. He walk ed into the station, showed the attendant a pistol, and then handed him a paper sack, ord ering him to take the money from the cash register. The man is described as 30 to 40 years of age, about 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet tall, husky with a muscular build, a tanned face, and dark hair with a slight curl. In most cases the bandit has worn blue jeans. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Larson, of Central Point, were Sunday visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Chrisfensen. The Christensens are expecting their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Alan Christensen, from Richmond, Ind. LEGAL NOTICES Weather Bureau's Service Fouls Lines Portland OP The Portland weather bureau was like the calm after the storm today. The storm started when the weather bureau decided it would give out recorded forecasts if persons would dial a certain number. This would help ease the load of overworked tele phone-answering employees. Thousands of calls came in to the number. Then came anonther call. It was from the telephone com pany. The calls to the other num ber were fouling up the ex change because the line wasn't capable of handling the traffic. Today both the telephone com pany and weather bureau agreed it was all a mistake. Hereafter, said the weather bureau to would-be callers, please get fore casts from newspapers, radio .or television. Abraham Lincoln received his license to practice law in 1836. Maxson, Martin Sell Stage Road Market Mr. and Mrs. Harvey C. Max son, Griffin Creek rd., and For est F. Martin have sold the M and M Market, South Stage rd., to Iva V. and Evelin M. Smith, route 1. box 539, Medford. The Smiths took over owner ship Monday. The former owners plan to leave this week end for a brief vacation trip. They have announced no future business plans, but will continue-to live in Medford. JENNIE JONES Guardian Four local boys were among the National Guardsmen, who re turned to Medford June 29 after two weeks of tactical combat training at Ft. Lewis, Wash. They were David Parker, Wil lard Wat erhouse, Tim Bailey and Franklin Westfall. Mrs. Earl Moore returned to her home recently from Marys ville, Calif., where she spent five weeks in the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Ms. Herb Edwards. The Edwards have named their new; son, Brad ley Earl. The little boy was born June 1 and weighed seven pounds, two and one-half ounces. The couple has two other chil dren, a girl Karen and a son Douglas. Mrs. Edwards is the former Yvonne Moore. Mr. and Mrs. Darrel Greb were hosts to a dinner last week at their home in Medford. Pres ent for the occasion were her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Moore, of Gold Hill ,and Mrs. Dermin Maple and son, Steve of Central Point. Mr. and Mrs. Leonard An drews and son, Steve, and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Freeman, Howard and Pamela, spent June 29 at Diamond lake, where they spent the day boating and fish ing. Mr. and Mrs. Lee Malone spent baturday night camping at Diamond lake. They returned Sunday. Jim Burns went to work for the forest service July 1. He was one of this year's graduates of Crater High school. Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Blevins returned to their home in San Jose, Calif., June 26. They were called to Grants Pass by the death of his father, James T. Blevins who was 91 years old. He was well known in southern Oregon, by early settlers of this Priest Questioned In Fatal Shooting Recife, Brazil HPI A Roman Catholic priest was brought here today by police for questioning in the fatal shooting of the Bish op of Garanhuns. The priest, Father Hosana Si- quiera, fired three bullets into Msgr. Expedito Lopes in the bishop's palace at Garanhuns Tuesday, according to a Brazil ian news agency report. According to the reports, Si quiera. Curate of Quipapa Town ship, went to the palace to pro test against his suspension on a misdemeanor. When Lopes ap peared for the audience, Siqui era pulled out a revolver and opened fire, the reports said. Wind-Swept Fires Rage Over Long Island Land East Moriches, N.Y. API Fires fanned by high winds swept across more than 2,000 acres of grass and scrub pine near this Long Island commu nity Monday night. More than 1,000 persons were mustered to fight the scattered blazes in which at least three houses were burned. An esti mated 100 persons were evacu ated from nearby Center Moriches.
