Emeritus Consultant In Hedlelna, .-viayo . tunic Emeritus Professor of Medicine, Mayo Foundation r-yrJ A Person Who Has Changed Sex I recently read a booklet by Miss Tamara Rees, Ph.D. called "Reborn, A Factual Life Story of T r ansition f r om Male to Female," (pri v a tely print ed). This well written, frank, a nd very i n terest ing b o o k 1 et tells of a per s o n who. W n e n DOm, or Alvarez seemed to be a boy, physically, but from early childhood was physically a girl. She was never so happy as when dressing up in her sisters' clothes. She al ways was delicate and frail, and had no interest in boys' sports. So many persons, the minute they hear of somone with a mix up like this in his or her sex promptly get angry and dis gusted and vituperative. As Miss Rees says of her childhood period, "I can only remember the many hours of loneliness and bewilderment I was experiencing. I spent hours wondering why I could not do as I wanted to do, and. . .why. . . J seemed different from the other boys. I did not have any desire to be like them, but neither was I aware at this age that I wanted to appear physically like a girl ....I felt completely left out, and I wanted so desperately to be-. long. This feeling of rejection caused me many hours of bitter heartache and tears." "I remember the many sleep less nights crying myself to sleep. . .because of the inability to share my problems with my family." In high' school Miss Rees was rejected by the boys because her mannerisms, her in terests, and her physical devel opment all made it apparent that she was not one of them. The girls would not accept her either because she was supposed to be a boy. By the time, she was 14, her parents realized that something was very wrong, and so they took her to a psychiatrist. Na-' turally, he couldn't change the character of the "boy." As I often say, I'd as soon try to change a boy's body into that of a girl as to change a boy's mind into that of a girl s. Then, Miss Rees' father lost his temp er, and taking a stick, beat her black and blue. That, of course, was a very logical way of solv ing the problem! As a result of this the girl ran away from home and, for a time, was a hobo. Later, she worked in CCC camp, and in the Armed Forces It was remarkable that so frailly built a person, who was often persecuted and hazed by the men b e c a use of her psychic make-up, made as good an arrr.,y record as she did. Like so many of these un happy persons, Miss Rees later got to wandering from place to place, trying out one psychia trist after another. Finally, she went to Holland vhere she was operated on, and turned physi cally into the woman she had al ways wanted to be. As she says, 'Neither then nor now have I ever had any feeling of regret or cause for apprehen sion that my decision migr.t have been an incorrect one." There still were many unplea sant difficulties to go through in order to get a legal recogni tion of the change of sex; and later there was the problem 01 facing curious reporters. Fortun ately, the reporters were kind. As Miss Rees says, "Today I am one of the happiest persons alive, and I have a deep feeling of gratitude and indebtedness to the doctors who have made all of this possible." Dress Abhorrent As I often say to these persons who have the body largely of a man, -and the personality of a woman, it is very hard for a normally-sexed person to con ceive of a man's hoping desper ately that he can find a surgeon who can help him. I could not understand it until I had talk ed to a number of these people and had come to see that phys ically they were very feminine. Naturally, their male body and male dress was abhorrent to them. The decision to have the operation performed was easy because the change in sexual s t a t us was so logical and so greatly desired. One reason why we physicians are so reluctant to help these unfortunate peo ple is that we always have a fear that, after the operation, the person might change his or her mind, and want to go back. This I should say now, is most unlike ly. I know that for having writ tenen this column, I will get a number of vituperative letters from people who will think that I am foul-minded.
