Film and television producers are constantly subjected to the criticism that they produce too many sordid dramas dealing with crime, drug addiction and alcoholism. Perhaps they do. However, let us not be too hard nn them. Consider the produc tions of the so-called "legitimate stage." Eugene O'Neill's play "Long Day's Journey Into Night" was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for being "the best Amer icana drama" of the year This play deals with the family life of a drug addict and three al coholics. Horses and Women Does your wife feature a long or short hair-do style? Don't answer me. It is none of my business. However, it is definite ly yours and deserves your close attention. Short hair-do styles are much more expensive to maintain than long ones. It na turally follows that the popular izing of short hair-do styles trreatly increases the incomes of hairdressrs. And there hangs tale. The Paris hairdressers were major factors in popular izing the short hair fashion. It meant so much to them finan cially that they threatened to expel from their association any hairdresser who attempted to popularize long hair-do style. Asking Queries from clients. Q. Would your wife be satisfied with a one-third interest in you? Does she realize what a lucky girl she is to have a husband all her own? Presents During their marriage the mil lionaire lumberman J. Has he offered any opinion as to the quality of the food served in his outfit? Anyway, the gov ernment statisticians recently re ported that the cost of feeding an enlisted man in the United States Army is now $1.02 a dav in this country and $.99 a day overseas. I must get some sample menus and see how the boys are doing. I recall when I was in the army the food was freq uently so bad in the mess hall that most of the enlisted men ate at the Post Exchange res taurant. That was at the Presidio in San Francisco. MAIL TRIBUNE FIVE Jim D Mother got me into this. Mrs. T. D. His friend is a bad influence. Cha-Cha." This dance is the basic of one of the best numbers in the musical show hit titled "The Bells Are Ringing." My girl friend wants me to learn to do the cha-cha-cha. Of course, I will try. But that is strictly for love. I don't think I have the figure for it. Jim D Two years ago my mother introduced me to the daughter of a friend of hers and I went out with her quite a lot for about a year. This girl, Betty, is 29. three years older than I am. She :s very homely and she is taller than I am. I'm very embarrassed when I go out with her and I decided to call it quits. That is easier said than done, however. Betty calls me con stantly at home and at my office She keeps inviting me over to her home for dinner and gives me gifts on every occasion. I don't reciprocate until it be comes absolutely necessary. She has practically asked me to marry her and I've had to more or less dodge the proposal. I can't tell this girl to let me alone. I don't want to hurt her feelings. My mother got me into this and I think she ought to get me out by having a quiet talk with Betty. Mrs. T. D Jim simply doesn t know what is good for him This girl, while not the most beauti ful in the world, is by no means homely. She is intelligent, has a charming personality and is a good homemaker. She is by no means at a loss for men, but she happens to care for Jim. It's his luck and he is too much of a fool to know it. When Jim first started seeing Betty, he liked her very much and saw none of the faults he now speaks of. Last year, how ever, he took up with a friend who has been a very bad in fluence on him. This young man immediately made fun of Betty and told Jim that he looks like an idiot going out with a girl older and taller than he is. This is nonesense, because Betty looks younger than Jim Confederate Money Will Buy Dinner Orkney Springs, Va. iIP You're lucky if you heeded that rebel song: "Save your Confererate money, boys; "The South will rise again . . ." Commiifee Will Study State Power Williamsburg, Va. W Gov. William G. Stratton of Illinois invited fellow-governors today to nominate members of a com mittee to confer with the' Eisen hower administration on ways to increase the powers of the states. Stratton, a Republican and newly elected chairman of the National Governors' Conference, was authorized by the confer ence Wednesday to name the committee to follow up a pro posal by President Eisenhower in a speech here Monday. The 1957 meeting of the conference adjourned Wednesday. The Eisenhower plan was ex pected to figure in discussions at a White House lunch in Washing ton today to which the 19 Repub lican governors at the confer ence were invited. Eisenhower proposed that the governors and his administra tion set up a joint task force to study how to return some federal functions and tax sources to the states. The proposal was greeted by considerable skepticism among the governors. Some, however, felt the effort might be worth while if it merely arrested the trend toward greater exercise of federal power. SCUD LOCALLY Y MORTON Milling Co. Medford, Oregon and is no more than a fraction of an inch taller. Jim has ad mitted he wouldn't 1 Tve noticed these things about Betty if his friend had'nt pointed them out. The Council: It appears from both statements that Jim is be ing persecuted or intimidated by his mother, Betty and a friend. Anyone who can man age to get pressured by three separate individuals must be asking for it. And if Jim is ask ing for it, mother is at least par tially responsible. Mrs. T. D.'s notion that Jim "doesn't know what is good for him" encourages this man of 26 to rely on anyone's judgment but his own. When a young man must ask his mother's help in getting out of a "situation" with a girl, things have gotten mighty bad with him. Jim should recognize that his attitude toward Betty is very much conditioned by his imma ture relationship with his moth er. He has let Betty take the reins of his life. Then, ashamed of himself, angry and uncomfort able, he makes the gestures of trying to shake her off. He doesn't really know how he feels about her, and thus becomes the prey of any "friend" who has his own reasons for wanting to get in on the act. Jim really has only one prob lem growing up enough to know fiis own mind and to take the responsibility for his own actions. (COPYRIGHT 1357. GENERAL FEAURES CORP.) Brewster learned Wednesday that he was convicted as he was presiding over the conference's 21st convention here.
