The University of California re corded a strong quake at 4:21 p.m. (p.s.t.), with a second phase following 10 minutes later. Seismologist John DeNoyer said the quake had a magnitude of between 7.50 and 7.75 on the Richter scale of 10. He estimated it was about 5.400 miles away in a northwesterly direction. The U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey Office in Honolulu also recorded a quake, placing it close to Siberia. In Mobile. Ala., the Spring Hill College seismograph recorded a "tremendous earthquake" 6,700 miles from Mobile in an undeter mined direction at the same time as the quake in Berkeley was re corded. Later, the UC seismograph re corded a slight temblor in the South San Francisco and San Bruno areas at 9:38 p.m. De Noyer said it has a 2.50 magni tude. Hooper warns, however, that while the next 10 per cent move ment is more likely to be up than down, the next 2 to 5 per cent move could just as easily be down as up, and concludes "it might be a good thing all around if some of these ricn growth stocks had a further cor rection." Edmund W. Tabell. analyst for Walson & Co. says his technical indicator has not yet signalled a sell but could do so shortly unless the market holds or ral lies. But such a signal if it is given, he says, would be a loss of momentum or secondary type signal rather than a primary type signal resulting from an overbought condition. ' Secondary signals, he notes, are sometimes qickly reversed, whereas primary signals are not. Francis I. Du Pont Co. points out again that many stocks have declined while the average were rising in markets not long ago and adds that the best course is to continue ownership of under valued equities along with cash and cash equivalent reserves for buying opportunities in the fu ture.
