Several Promotions Appointments Made At Southern Oregon Friday. June 21, 1957 Eugene Fourteen promotions and 1 1 new appointments were approved for Southern Oregon Cole2e at a meeting of the state board of higher education here Wednesday. The board approved a total of 32 promotions and 17 appoint ments for Southern Oregon Col lego, Eastern Oregon College, and Oregon College of Educa tion. At SOC, promotions included: to professor A. L. Fellers, as soriate professor of English, new title of dean of men and director of student personnel; Eugene W. Bowman, associate professor of Mathematics and education, new title of coordinator of curricu lum; Elliott B. McCracken, as sociate professor of science, named acting chairman of science department: Lloyd D. Penninrton. associate professor of rhemistry. Associate Professor To associate professor D. E. The Assembly is nominally in recess at the moment, and the foreign minister who custom arily sit in at the start of a ses sion have scattered. It appeared likely that a special session at this time would be attended mainly by second-stringrs. Decision 6 Wednesday No decision is expected one ; way or the other until Wednes day, when representatives of the 24 nations which sponsored the special Hungary committee meet here at the invitation of the United States. The committee report, publish ed Thursday, cited such acts of Soviet savagery as the wanton shelling of undefended buildings and the barbarous shooting of women and children in breadlines. Young Boy Killed When Hit by Auto Roseburg W Marvin Fur lough Jr., 9. was fatally in jured near here Thursday when struck by a car on the new Highway 99 route that by-passes Winston. It was the first fata! accident on the recently opened tjetch. State police said the boy was hit while he and a companion were walking along" the highway about 5 p.m. Driver of the car was Arlene Mardell Hostetler of Winston. The youngster was taken to Winston emergency hospital by his mother and died en route to a. Canyonville hospital. H MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE FIV Budget Recommended Eugene A total of $756,856 hes been recommended for the instructional budget of Southern Oregon college in 1957-58. The recommendation was made by the finance committee of the Oregon board of higher education during a special ses sion in Portland Tuesday. Rec ommendations are subject to ap proval by the board. Also proposed for Southern Oregon college is completion of a science classroom building and central heating plant. Teen-Age Gangs Active in Portland j Portland OP A 15-year- j old boy was hospitalized today with a broken jaw after he was beaten by a group of teen-age youths and police said young j gangs again had become a ma jor problem here. Gary R. Lohkamp told police he and a companion, Jerry Es pinosa, 15, were attacked by five youths Thursday night while they were walking home. Espinosa said he managed to flee but that Lohkamp slipped and fell and was beaten and kicked while on the ground. The youth also suffered multiple con tusions. Lohkamp said it was too dark 1 to get a description of his assail ants. Meanwhile, two youths, both 17, were remanded to Municipal Court on charges of attempted robbery by fear in connection with an attempted assault and robbery of a motorist last Sat urday. And police said they had learned of other youth gangs in the 10 to 14 year old age group after taking two boys, 10 and 11 into custody for acts of vandalism. New Metals Plant Started at Albany Albany, Ore. HP Construc tion has begun here on a new metals separation and purifica tion plant for the Wah Chang Corporation that will provide new jobs for about 50 persons. The plant will provide equip ment for separation of hafnium from zirconium and another purification process. It is under construction near the present zirconium reduction plant and the total complex of Albany's expanding metals industry will provide additional raw materials from which atomic reactors arc built. The Albany firm is one of three in the nation under zirconium supply contract to the Atomic Enegry Commission. The new plant will feature a five-story tower and two-story wing. Negligent Homicide . Ruled in Bend Mishap Bend 'IP A coroners jury here Thursday returned a find ing of negligent homicide in con nection with the auto accident a week ago in which five per sons were killed. District Attorney George Rakestraw said a warrant woulc be issued for the arrest of Jeff rev Stoddard. 16. of Bend. Young Stoddard was operator of a second car involved in the collision that took the lives of Mr. and Mrs. John E. Milson and their two daughters of Hal sey and of Mrs. Milson's brother. Dearl Laxton. Stoddard and a passenger in his car were seri ously injured.
