Morgan Joined In Rats Proles) Salem 1P State Agriculture Director Robert J. Steward to day joined with Howard Morgan public utility commissioner, in appealing to the Transcontinen tal Freight Bureau that pro posed reductions in westbound rail rates on fresh meats not be placed in effect without similar reductions in westbound rail rates on live animals. In a letter to Morgan, Steward pointed out that Oregon live- i stock producers are largely, de pendent for their market upon the ability of Oregon meat pack ers to provide a consistent com petitive demand for their live stock. To permit competitive operations with products shipped from Midwest plants, the present cost relationship between Mid west meat and that of live ani mals shipped from the Midwest to Oregon meat packers must be maintained, Steward said. Steward said the agriculture department was afraid of the ef fects of the proposed reductions in fresh meat rates from the Midwest because it might slow j down the slaughtering and sale 1 of livestock in Oregon and other I Western states. Argentina and New Zealand lead the world in per capita i meat consumption. special . SUNDAY. Main Medford Porter Impressed by Prestige Loss Suffered in Latin America By A. ROBERT SMITH Mail Tribune Correspondent Washington In a week end visit in Puerto Rico, Rep. Charles O. Porter was most im- pressed by the unanimous con viction among thoso he met that America's for eign policy to ward South American die tators as ruin ed American prestige in La tin America. A. Robl Smith This has been highlighted by the Murphy and Galindez cases involving the Trujillo regime of the Dominican Republic. Porter said democratic forces in South America who wage a constant fight with the forces of dictatorship are disheartened by the aid America has given and continues to give the dic tators. He was told this bv newsmen, as well as partisan groups who invited him to Puer to Rico because he has cham pioned the investigation of the Murphy-Galindez case. The State Department won't say how much money out of for eign aid program has been channeled to Trujillo's country, but it runs into the millions. Nor will the department of state specifically say what the mili tary aid funds have been spent for. Morse Wants To Know Sen. Wayne Morse (D-Ore 1, raised questions about this pro gram this week during Senate t if 838 W. McANDREWS RD. PHONE SP 3-1666 Store Hours: 8 A.M. to 7 P.M. Rubottom as assistant secretary of state for Latin Am erican affairs. Morse wanted to know whether the U. S. couldn't use aid funds as a lever on the Trujillo government to bring about better cooperation in sol ving the Murphy-Galindez case. Rubottom never answered th question, and Morse didn't press him for more than a general policy statement. Rubottom recalled that dur ing World War II. the Carib bean was "infested with enemy submarines." He said Trujillo's Caribbean stronghold is one of 12 South American countries with which the U. S had made military defense agreements, un der which we supply certain equipment and military aid funds. He said America has es tablished a guided missile test ing station in the island which the Dominican Republic shares with Haiti but didn't say which country it is located in. Morse pointed out that re cently Cuba's Batista regime, another dictator, received a shipment of tanks which caus ed bad reaction against Ameri ca from elements that favor democratic government. Rubot tom said he thought the timing of the shipment was unfortun ate. He said the military de fense agreement with each country carries an injunction against the people of the coun try receiving it. The government of Columbia was recently overthrown, Ru bottom pointed out, without Hill Brand 2Vi size $1 oo For 2 CoPor 35 29 LARGE SUNKIST Doz. 181 he CtirYou Want IN MAIL TiOBUN FBEO much bloodshed, suggesting that American aid hadn't entrenched the existing non-democratic re gime. Fascist-Type Government Rubottom agreed that the Trujillo government which ap parently dictated the elemina tion of Gerald Murphy, the Oregon flier, is a dictatorship and can be classed as a fascist type government. But he claim ed that the State Department can't be guided by internal con ditions of a foreign country in determining the policy which will be in America's self-interest. "Our primary interest is to safeguard America," he said There would seem to be a serious conflict of interest be tween this attitude, as it mani fests itself in military aid to Latin dictators, and the noble effort of the U.S. Information Agency which is trying to sell America to the world by re porting how democracy func tions and what are our aspira tions for free men everywhere. South of the border this sounds like "Do as I say, not as I do." Franklin High Girl Named Queen of Rosaria Portland Of) Alice East man was crowned queen of the 1957 Rose Festival Wednesday night.
