(InUntntional) Central Plains Raked By Tornado Funnels; More Storms Expected ft USITED STATES O Tornadoes raced arross sec tions of the Central Plains Tuesday night and weathermen warned of more violent weather today along a squall line stretch ing from Texas to Ohio. At least IS tornado funnels swirled over Kastern Kansas Tuesday night, but most of them remained aloft and no deaths or injuries uere reported. Other tvisfers wrre reported in Mis souri and Illinois. A Unitpd Fress count showed st least three deaths blamed on the storms, all of them in Illi nois. Two persons were killed in a traffic crash on a rain swept highway and a telephone linesman was electrocuted re pairing storm damage near Elm hurst. III. Many of the twisters appeared Ex-O'Brien Woman Killed in Crash Cave Junction Funeral sp-- I vices for Shirley Enyart, 32, were held Tuesday, in Crescent City. Mrs. Enyart was killed in an automobile accident Friday morning about l'.-i miles from her home at Klamath, Calif. She is a former resident of O'Brien. She moved from Illin ois Valley about three years ago. The accident occurred when a logging truck and trailer jack knifed, crashing into' the Enyart car. Two children in addition to Mrs. Enyart. were killed, and four others, including Greg and Sandra Kay Enyart, were seri ously injured. Greg, 6, has not regained consciousness while Sandra, 11, is suffering from multiple fractures of her arm and f-g and head injuries. A'l four are at Seaside hospital, in Crescent City. The group was en route to a picnic. Another son, J. L. Enyart, 8, was on the school bus at the time of the accident. Mrs. Enyart is survived by her husband. Lecil, of Klamath; her three children: a brother. Neil Rice, of Klamath Falls; her mother and father and a brother, Tom, of Enid. Oklahoma, a bro ther, Bob bin Washington, D. Several persons were injured at Pleasure Ridge Park, Ky., a suburb of Louisvillp, when house trailers were torn from their foundations by the wind and overturned. Youth Fined in District Court Harvey Walter Snyder, 20. ol Robinson hotel, was fined S50 and sentenced to 30 days in jail in district court yesterday in connection with a theft which involved three other youths. Snyder's sentence may be sus pended after 10 days. Snyder was arrested yester day. A Medford and a Central Point boy, both 17, and a 15-year-old recently released from McClaren School for Boys at Woodburn had been apprehend ed earlier. The group admitted breaking into the home of Mrs. Shirley Wiona Ashcr. Elkader St., Ash land, about March 4, according to officers reports. About S5 in change was taken from two coin banks and some frozen meats were taken from a freezer. The Medford boy is being held in county jail pending possible action by juvenile officers. The Central Point youth has been turned over to juvenile author ities, and the 15-year-old was returned to the Woodburn school. Jun 12, 1S37 Evidence of Second Robinson Crusoe Said Found on Pacific Isle London W British scien tists in the Pacific for the recent hydrogen bomb tests uncovered traces of a second Robinson Cru soe who lived on a desert island more than 100 years ago, it was disclose today. Informed sources said high ranking Royal Air Force officers in London were studying a diary found on a lonely U-shaped coral atoll 200 miles from the site of Britain's two hydrogen bomb tests last month. Shacklei Slipped The diary, kept by a Scot nam ed Adam McCulIoch, showed its owner had decided to "slip the shackles of civilization" and head for '"the peace of a tropical island" around 1850. RAF men who landed on the island to establish an observa tion post found a number of ani mals resembling pigs roaming the island. Further inland they found a rotting hut and signs of past habitation. In the hut itsejf was the diary, hound in black leather, with the name Adam McCulIoch on the flyleaf. A careful search turned up no trace of McCulloch's remains. H ' Japanese navv men also anoar- enly lived on the island during World War II, Air Force sources said. They landed from a raft when their ship was sunk, lived in McCulloch's hut for two months and then sailed out I again, leaving behind a written ! record of their adventures. The real Robinson Crusoe, im i mortalized in the novel by Dan- iel Defoe, was a sailor who lived I on an island for 27 years after being snipwrecKea. ine dook was based on the real life adven tures of Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish seaman marooned on Juan Fernandez islet in the early 1700s. The sailor was Douglas Ward rop. second mate of the freighter British Monarch. The ship's owners reported today he fell overboard when the ship was 1.000 miles out of Panama en route to Japan and wasn't missed until the ship had gone 100 miles. His mother gave high praise for the ship's captain for the "miraculous" rescue and the incredible navigation that re turned the ship to the exact spot. But she said it was nothing new for Douglas. Despite the delay, Capt. John Coutts, 50, steered back to the exact spot where Wardrop had fallen overboard and found him floating in the sea un harmed despite the fact that the area is notorious for sharks. COMPANY Animals Learn By Watching, Scientists Beginning To Believe BY DELOS SMITH United Press Science Editor New York 'IP Formal sci ence is edging into agreement with all the quite unscientific people who believe dogs, cats, horses and other animals can learn to do things by watching their fellows do them. Much scientific experimenta tion up to now indicated animals learned only by trial and error. These experiments failed to pro duce any proof that animals could also learn by observing. For that reason the experi ments of Russell M. Church of Brown University have much in terest, since they produce proof that laboratory rats, at least, transmit "learned b e h a v ior" from one to the other. Settings Unnatural Church fell his results "en courage speculation about the possibleity of a non-purposive transmission of culture among animals." He granted laboratory rats were not animals living na turally in natural settings. Nevertheless, he thought he had uncovered "a mechanism through which social transmis sion of behavior could readily occur." Human beings have such "mechanisms." At the ends of the T's arms, were water wells installed at floor level, each with a lid which could be lifted or closed by push button from a distance. At the entrance to the arms were lights which couid be turned on or off. Thirsty rats were introduced into the maze at the foot of the T. By trial and error, they learn ed that if they turned into the arm of the T in which a light glowed, the well's lid would be up and they could drink. Experiment Works These rats became "leader" One by one. they were returned to the maze in the company of untrained rats. It is well known that rats readily learn to follow leaders, but there is no proof thev learn anything by doing so. After the untrained rats had followed the leaders to water, the leaders were removed. The untrained rats then quite on their own went purposefully to the well whose lid was open.
