Firemen said the fire burned two acres before being ex tinguished. Taken Two 50-foot hoses were stolen last Thursday night from the Butte Falls school, according to a report to the county sheriffs office. The hoses, one red and one black, had been left out to water the school lawn, L. O. Macklen, su perintendent, reported. House Tire One pumper was dispatched Mondav to the resi dence of Cliff D. Smith, 1125' 2 West 10th St., Medford, where a fire ignited by an electric stove had spread to the ceiling and wall. Firemen said the fire was out when they arrived and that most of the damage to the house wit from smoke. Giria Arrested Two Medford girls, aged 17 and 18, were ar rested Monday on charges of larceny from a store, according to city police. Officers said the girls, who were charged with shoplifting several items from Medford stores during the past month, were released to their parents with instructions to ap pear before juvenile authorities. The Big Y is one of a number of local business concerns that provide x-rays for their em ployes each year as part of their health program for the protection of their customers, according to the health associa tion. Health authorities recommend annual chest x-rays as an effec tive means of discovering early tuberculosis while it is in its early, easily curable stages, the associated stated. They consider it especially important for peo ple in the food industry to have x-rays. The films also disclose other chest and heart conditions, they said. The insurgents are holed up in the Sierra Maestra mountains in Oriente province where Cuba's crack U.S.-equipped 1st Infantry division was airlifted this week end to spearhead ground operations. The government was making clear its determination to wipe out the rebels in Oriente prov ince. Small farmers in the "dan-' ger zones" are being evacuated. Brewster Target of Teamster Resolution San Francisco W The Bay Area Joint Council of Teamsters meets tonight to consider a "re form resolution" aimed at Frank Brewster, president of the West ern Conference of Teamsters. The council also will consider what stand to take on choosing new officers for the Western Conference at its meeting in San Diego June 24-28. The reform resolution ii ipon sored by the East Bay Milk Dri vers Union and is expected to have the backing of other locals. The resolution was expected to accuse Brewster of authoriz ing illegal loans to Teamster President Dave Beck and to pri vate trucking firms in violation of the union's constitution. Beaverton Youth Dies on Swim Trip Vancouver. Wash. HP Dav id Wistrand, 18, Beaverton, Ore., died last night while swimming in the east fork of the Lewis river. Clark County Coroner Paul Mylan said an autopsy was held to determine if the boy might have suffered a heart attack. His Beaverton high school classmates said the boy sudden ly went under. His body was re covered immediately but efforts to revive him failed. The high school students were on a senior class picnic at Lewis-: ville Park. Dewitt Jones I of Clark county has informed ' young Linda Close that her case j will be handled by juvenile au thorities, after a review by Su I perior Court of the fatal Sunday ! shooting of her stepfather. He I said an inquest probably will be held. Sheriff Clarence McKay said his investigation showed that William Higley. 36, was stran gling his estranged wife when the 14-year-old girl shot him in front of their Vancouver home. McKay said the Madras, Ore., man advanced on the girl in a menacing manner after she had v.-arned him to leave her moth er alone "or I'll shoot you." On May 15, McKay said, Hig ley had been convicted of assault and fined for another attack on Mrs. Higley. Crash in Alaska Kills Two Airmen McGrath. Alaska HP A twin engine C47 from Ladd Air Force base, Fairbanks, crashed near here Monday night, killing two of the nine Air Force personnel aboard. An Air Force spokesman said the plane developed engine trou ble while on a supply mission to an outpost near this small town, 225 miles southeast of Fairbanks. Names of the dead were withheld pending notifica tion of next of kin. Two more airmen are in a Ladd AFB hospital with serious injuries. Five escaped un harmed. The Air Force said the pilot attempted an emergency land ing at 5:30 p.m. (AST) on a small air strip nearby, but crashed in a heavily - wooded area. Schrunk Witness Intimidation Charged Portland W Clifford O. Ben nett, 34, was held in Multnomah county jail Monday night when he was unable to post $10,000 bail set by Circuit Judge Charles IJedding on a citizen's informa tion charging Bennett with at tempting to intimidate a witness. Bail was later reduced to S5000 which Bennett posted and was released. Bennett was arrested in down town Portland shortly after James Q. Jenkins husband of Virginia Jenkins, charged in a complaint that Bennett had tried ' to persuade Mrs. Jenkins "to tes tify falsely.and untruthfully" at the perjury trial of Mayor Terry j Schrunk, scheduled for June 17. , The mayor is accused of lying ' when he said he did not accept I a bribe from Bennett at the time Schrunk was sheriff of Multno mah county.
