Roosevelt was heralded Thurs day as "the greatest conserva tionist of our era," by Senator Richard L. Neuberger of Ore gon at the annual Memorial Day commemerative c e r emonies at the grave of the nation's 3Jnd Presideit. Neuberger cited R o o sevelt's leadership in creatine such pro grams as the Civilian Conserva tion Corps, the Tennessee Valley Authority, the Columbia River hydro-electric-power system and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Serv ice. "Few nations have looted their natural resources as profligately and in so short a period as the United States," he said. "We need to be reminded of an era when a great man and his as sociates dedicated themselves to a pj-ogram of genuine respect and protection of this legacy, whicji 'we have received from trie Almighty." Sa& Lacking Ko , Neuberger. declared that Roo sevejt symbolized a fidelity to the protection of natural resour ces which the Oregon Senator charged is lacking in the Eisen JBywer administration. "An. administration reigns in Washington which has surrender ed surging rivers, valuable for ests, rare" wildlife preserves, and immense mineral deposits to private groups for piecemeal ex ploitation," he said. "It is well, I think, that the contrast in this vital domain of government be tween the present administration and that of Franklin Delano Ro osevelt should be emphasized on this Memoria' Day." Neuberger, a Senate member of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial Commission, spoke under the auspices of Mrs. Elea nor Roosevelt, who was in charge of the event at Hyde Park. He and his wife Maurine were guests of Mrs. Roosevelt for the occa sion. Snakes Pose Problem For House Occupants Williamsville, N.Y. HP) When the family of Edmund M. Wuenst Jr. bought an old house here last year it didn't figure on having an unwelcome occu pants. Such as snakes. The Wuensts didn't think too much of the matter when they found a three-foot snake shortly after moving in But things got worse this year. They found three more in the basement and got rid of them. But when one was discovered in the kitchen at breakfast time one day, Mrs. Wuenst decided she needed help. But allshe got was sympathy. She telephoned the Amherst police department, whjch refer red her to the Buffalo Zoo. "The zoo," said a dejected Mrs. Wuenst, "said it couldn't send anybody out but would be glad to see the snakes if we brought them in." Mr. Peepers Said 'Very Costly Duck' Cincinnati flP Mr. Peeprs is as pampered a duck as you'll find anywhere. Mr. and Mrs. Dan Thorton, who got him at a county fair in Indiana, admit there is some question as to whether they own Mr. Peepers or he owns them. "He won't eat regular duck corn, Mrs. Thorton said. He likes canned peas and cooked macaroni, celery and head let tuce. "When I think of all the can ned peas I've bought and the macaroni 1 ve cooked he looks like a very expensive duck." Mr. Peepers always insists on midnight lunch and quacks mad ly until he is served. "Once we got a female duck to keep him company," said Mrs. Thorton. "but he went way down in the end of the yard and wouldn't have a thing to do with her. . "Maybe he doesn't know he is e duck. We got him when he was a day old, and maybe he thinks he is jut like us." Record Number of Ponds Built in 1956 Washington (IF) The Agri culture Department reports that farmers built 87,430 ponds in 1956, a record for any one year. The previous high mark was the 86,421 farm ponds built in 1954. In the last six years,- 425,521 ponds have been built with tecn- nical assistance from the Soil Conservation Service. Since the service began offering such as sistance, farmers have built 803,000 ponds averaging one 10 two acres each. Most of the ponds were built as a basic conservation plan far mers develop for their entire farm in cooperation with the na tion's 2,726 soil conservation dis tricts! The ponds supply water for livestock, fire protection. small-scale irrigation, for fish management, improvement of wildlife habitat, and fop recrea Farm ponds have been most popular in southeastern, north eastern, and midwestern states. Farmers in Kentucky have built 64,318 ponds, while in Missis sippi the count is 56,187. Far mers have built 16,256 ponds in Iowa, 11,958 in Nebraska, and 8,541 in New York. On The Side By E. V. The reason for that probably is that when the "occupational" name custom was in vogue there were no plumbers. Who was the first plumber? Rose mary Clooney appears out to break this record. Married four years she has two children, ex pects another this summer. This brings to mind that when Ava Gardner married Frank Sinatra she said, "I want lots of chil dren. I have always wanted to emulate my grandmother who had 19 children." University of Illinois farm credit specialist, listed these rules for sound use of credit in j farming and for re ducing borrowing risks: Limit borrowing for enter prises that are not fully under stood; to keep debts low, use loans for purposes that will re turn the mot for every dollar borrowed and in the shortest time; study price trends, espec ially on items bought with bor rowed money, have adequate in curance for added risks; use loans only for purposes that will increase income. HP) A bat tle of the water buckets at the University of Illinois slopped to a halt early today, leaving the Champaign county jail overflow ing with 50 tear-gassed students. All 50 were charged with un lawful assembly after a riot in which more than 3,500 students participated. Police from five neighboring counties were called in to quash the revolt which . started harm lessly enough Thursday night as a water fight, and later swelled into a raging stream of students which threatened to engulf the entire town. Three persons, including Champaign County Sheriff Ever ett J. Hedrick, were manhandled by the students and suffered minor injuries.
