Souvenir of Civil " War Days Found At Domiciliary There are no civil war veter ans at Camp White, but a grand sea of trusted aide and friend of General George B. McClellan, of the union forces, has been hiding his light under a bushel. Among his collection of fam ily memento is a photograph of Colonel John Mechan, his granddfather, taken at Camp Winfield Scott, near Yorktown, May 2. 1862 by none other than the famous photographer of the Civil War Brady. Legend Seen On the bac k of the picture of rhe camp group of soldiers is this notation: "Brady's Album Gallery No. 388 Group, Topo graphical" Engineers." Tne,n this legend appears: "The photographs of this series were taken directly from nature, at considerable cost. Warning is therefore given that legal pro ceedings; will be at once institut ed against any party infringing the copyright." Termisston has been given by Ralph Baker, Camp White, to use this-photograph, and it is more than likely that the heirs at law will nn' object to publi cation of this interesting souven ir of the Civil War in the Mail Tribune on this Memorial Day. Brady, the official photographer, is recognized in history as the first news photo grapher engaged during wartime Japanese Prosecution Agrees To New Trial For U.S. Serviceman Tokyo up The Japanese nrncprntinn ha aclrprl that flio ! first American serviceman ever I sentenced to death in a Japanese court be given a new trial, is was disclosed today. The Sendai procurator's office agreed that the hanging sen tences decreed by Sendai district court on March 20 for Pvt. Orvis L. C. Boone, 24, of Galveston, Tex., and his Japanese sweet heart were too severe. Life Sentence Demanded The procurator had demanded a life sentence for Boone and Shigeko Sasaki, his 20-year-old sweetheart, on charges of mur der, robbery and arson. The court by-passed the recommenda tion nd imposed the death sen tence because of the "barbarity of the crime." The defense appealed to the Sendai high court for a new trial and the procurator's office agreed that the case should be to record incidents, battles and personalities of the conflict for posterity. Baker recalls that his grand father knew General McClel lan intimately, and had been as sociated with him in engineer ing projects before the war. Co. Mechan was born in Newry, Ireland, and educated at Woolf rich, the West Point of England, before coming to America. reopened. The appeal for a new trial came at a time when Japan ese and American feelings over the "Girard case" had reached a new peak. Center of Controversy Army Specialist 3c William S. Girard of La Salle, 111., is the center of an international con troversy over whether he should be tried in a Japanese court or by U. S. Army court martial for the accidental shooting dead of Mrs. Naka Sakai on a U.S. fir ing range. Girard was Eiven until today by the Maebashi district court to name a lawyer, but reliable in formants said he would riot name a defense counsel until the United States and Japan decide which will try him. There was no such dispute in the case of Boone. The Negro soldier was clearly off duty at the time he and his sweetheart robbed and bludgeoned a Japan ese woman to death, then set fire to her house to conceal the crime.
