Mar 28, 1SS7 Ike Makes Gains in Budget Battle With Support From House Leaders Washington W President Eisenhower today made some gains In the battle of the budget but he still had a long way to go. The President's principal gain came in the House where GOP leaders lined up strong support behind moves to restore $323 million to the pared - down de fense budget. But that is only 23 per cent of the money Eisenhower has said must be restored in order not to gamble with the nation's se curity. And GOP leaders said Eisenhower has been told there is no chance of getting that much restored. Ik, GOP Leader Confer Republican congressional lead ers headed for the White House this morning for their weekly strategy meeting with the Presi dent. They were certain to re port to him that. Economy minded senators are backing the Eisenhower $875 million housing bill in prefer ence to the Democrats' $2,850, 000,000 bill. One influential sen ator said the Eisenhower bill has a good chance of Senate ap proval. The House already has approvea a o.uuu.uuu Hous ing bill. Senate-House conferees re- tored $6 million to the battered budget of the U.S. Information Agency. The compromise S96,- 200,000 budget $47,800,000 less than Eisenhower requested was sent back to the House and Senate for final approval. Religious leaders' began an extraordinary three-day appeal to Congress to spare economic aid for foreign nations. Protest ant, Catholic and Jewish spokes men planned to appear at a spec ial hearing of the House Foreign Affairs committee. Senator Hits Wast Chairman Harry Byrd of the Senate Finance committee con tended the "defense appropria tions can be reduced by a sub stantial amount by just elimin ating waste." "I don't intend to vote to in jure the essentials of national defense," the economy-bloc lead er declared. Sf. Mary's Seniors Receive Awards Awards to seniors of St. Mary's high school were made at a graduation breakfast for seniors last Sunday. Carol Moldovan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Moldovan, 1107 Brookdale rd., received the Christ the King award. Ecst boy-best girl award for service, citizenship and school spirit went to Ronald Pruitt and Marcia Beeler; Rotary club scholarship of $200, Barbara Lickess; honorary scholarship to Loyola university, John Laden Jr.; University of Oregon school of journalism scholastic press awards for yearbook service, Ronald Pruitt and Marcia Beeler. Singer Settles Auto Crash Suit Los Angeles (IB Singer Gor don MacRae has settled a $10, 000 damage suit resulting from' a traffic accident in December, 1955, but faces litigation on a $125,000 action brought by a woman involved in the crash. The settlement of a $10,000 suit, filed by Leonard Miller, 39, of Van Nuys, Calif., was an nounced Monday in Superior Court. The singer was reported to have agreed to pay Miller $2,325. Another case brought by Mrs. Marion Dunn, 38, was scheduled ioi trial Sept. 12. Miller charged MacRae with crashing into the back of his car, forcing it into an automo bile driven by Mrs. Dunn. CASH!
