Ike Makes Gains in Budget Battle
With Support From House Leaders
Washington W President
Eisenhower today made some
gains In the battle of the budget
but he still had a long way to
go.
The President's principal gain
came in the House where GOP
leaders lined up strong support
behind moves to restore $323
million to the pared - down de
fense budget.
But that is only 23 per cent of
the money Eisenhower has said
must be restored in order not
to gamble with the nation's se
curity. And GOP leaders said
Eisenhower has been told there
is no chance of getting that much
restored.
Ik, GOP Leader Confer
Republican congressional lead
ers headed for the White House
this morning for their weekly
strategy meeting with the Presi
dent. They were certain to re
port to him that.
Economy minded senators
are backing the Eisenhower $875
million housing bill in prefer
ence to the Democrats' $2,850,
000,000 bill. One influential sen
ator said the Eisenhower bill
has a good chance of Senate ap
proval. The House already has
approvea a o.uuu.uuu Hous
ing bill.
Senate-House conferees re-
tored $6 million to the battered
budget of the U.S. Information
Agency. The compromise S96,-
200,000 budget $47,800,000
less than Eisenhower requested
was sent back to the House
and Senate for final approval.
Religious leaders' began an
extraordinary three-day appeal
to Congress to spare economic
aid for foreign nations. Protest
ant, Catholic and Jewish spokes
men planned to appear at a spec
ial hearing of the House Foreign
Affairs committee.
Senator Hits Wast
Chairman Harry Byrd of the
Senate Finance committee con
tended the "defense appropria
tions can be reduced by a sub
stantial amount by just elimin
ating waste."
"I don't intend to vote to in
jure the essentials of national
defense," the economy-bloc lead
er declared.
