The Medical Roundup 1 DV j Emeritus Consultant Is Medicine, Mayo clinic Emeritus Professor of Medicine, Mayo Foundation Child-Beating After The Menopause Women keep asking me when, after the menopause, they can quit worrying about getting pregnant. Looking at sta tistics, I find that vei. few women ever become preg nant after they have s t opped menstruating , say around the age of 5 0. Dr Alvares o O m e D00KS say that if a woman does con ceive after age 45, she is like ly to abort or to be delivered of a dead child. As I happen to be editor of Modern Medicine, a journal that goes to 142,000 physicians twice a month, a while ago I inserted a note asking my readers to tell me if they knew of any cases of pregnancy after the menopause. To show how rare such cases are. Dr. J. Allen Howell, of Welling ton, Kan., said that 21 years of practice, during which time he had delivered about 100 women a year, he had not seen a single such case. That means not one in 2.100. Dr. J. P. Greehill, of Chic ago an obstetrician with a huge experience tells me of having delivered one woman 52 years of age, who had apparently gone through the menopause. Dr. G. R. Goering wrote of a woman 53 who had just had her . tenth baby. She had stopped menstrua- i ting at the age of 48. Dr. Joseph Backlar told of a woman who bore a child at the age of 51. She menstruated occasionally for an other two years. Dr. J. S. Giar dina told of a woman aged 46, who had not menstruated for 22 months, and yet had a normal boy. A year later she had an other baby a girl. Dr. A. F. Smith told of a woman of 52 with a mass in her abdomen who thought she had a tumor be cause she hadn't menstruated for 12 years. A few months later she was delivered of a healthy child. Dr. P. T. Wilson described an interesting case of a 48-year-old spinster who married a man of 70. Although she had not men struated for two years, she had a baby girl. Dr. Frank Spielman reported the case of a woman of 50, whose last menstrual period had come nine months before he saw her. At that time she was six months pregnant with her second child in 19 years. Around Hollywood By ALINE M0SBY Hollywood (IB Actor Cam-! eron Mitchell is recovering from an ulcer operation today but ! he s u f f ered worse pain, "a hit below the belt," he says, when he heard boxer Barney j Ross had turn ed movie crit-' ic. Mitchell por trayed Ross, Aline Mosby an ex-narcotics I addict, in a movie about the fighter's life, "Monkey on My Back." The actor's enthusiastic friends raved he' should cop an Oscar nomination but the first reaction was a blast from Barney. In a New York interview, Bar ney rapped the picture as being "cheap sensationalism." He also filed a suit claiming the ads damaged his reputation. . But Mitchell rallied in an in terview himself and delivered Ross a return uppercut. Rushes Viewed Daily "He was on the set every day of shooting," said Mitchell, talk ing rapidly with indignation. "Every day he saw the rushes and he'd throw his arms around me, kiss me and say, 'What a fantastic job this boy is doing.' "He saw the finished picture and said it was the greatest movie ever made! He has a per centage of the profits so why would he hurt our picture? He has no right to tear apart this labor of love." Mitchell whipped out a news paper clipping of an interview Ross gave here in February. Ross was quoted as saying, "This Mitchell, is doing such a great job as me I hardly can believeit." New Trend Cited "Monkey on My Back" is part of a new trend for pictures about narcotics. It is more daring than "The Man with a Golden Arm," and "A Hatful of Rain." In "Mon key" Mitchell jabs a neddle into his arm, a scene once taboo with Hollywood censors. "But Barney coached me for that scene himself," Mitchell said. "He told me how your eyes nearly pop out, how your face gets warm, how there's a tremen dous shock. "He made many suggestions, about the pain in the stomach, the cramps, nausea and kicking of legs. Some things we couldn't use because they, were too strong such as how he used to rip sheets and mattresses apart."
