THOMASINE SMITH Eagle Point Two boys from Eagle Point High school who qualified from this district for the state track meet held at Ore. State college surprised many by winning the state A-2 track and field championship. This divi sion includes all high schools in Oregon with enrollments be tween 150 and 500 students. Jack Greb and Wayne Christian scored 40 points for Eagle Point in winning the first place trophy. The boys acompanied by their coach, Stan Smith, will journey to Portland this coming week end where on Saturday they will compete in the Oregon AAU Track and Field championship meet. merly of Eagle Point, now living on Klamath river. The Eagle Point Elementary PTA will hold the last meeting of the school year on their regu lar date, Tuesday, May 28, in the school gymnasium. The meet ing will feature installation of officers and action on a motion tabled at the last regular meet ing. The school chorus will pre sent their spring concert under the direction of Mrs. Maxine Berryman, music instructor. Eagle Point Jaycee officers were installed Saturday May 18 at their Charter Banquet by Dick Stratton, district 10 vice-president from Central Point. Mem bers of the chapter were to talled by Dale Bartley of Cen tral Point and the newly elected charter president, Bart Simmons, was installed by Ron James, na tional director of Jaycees from Medford. John Smock, Central Point chapter, presented pins to all members. Keynote speaker of the evening Monte Montgomery, past state president, who spoke on the importance of the Jaycee organization and awarded the charter to the new chapter. Oth er speakers were Jake Olsen, Eagle Point city councilman, who welcomed the new organ ization on behalf of the city; Ron James, national director, and Bert Simmons, Eagle Point char ter president. Homer Billupps of Central Point was toastmaster. Larry Meyer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rob ert Meyer, was awarded the Teen Age Road-e-o plaque which was presented by member Chuck Martin. Among guests were Jack Greb, Wayne Christian, Norm Hooper, David Huffman and Coach Stan Smith who had just returned from the state track meet at Cor-vallis. Dane (Butchie) Smith was re leased from the Josephine Gen eral hospital in' Grants Pass on Saturday, May 18, and has been receiving visitors at his home. He will be permitted to attend school the last day. Ellen Callaghan and Shirley Hanson reached the semi-finals in the state tennis tournament at Corvallis last week end. The girls were defeated by McMinn ville who went on to win the state doubles championship. Millie Haynie won fourth in the state in the Knights of Pyth ias speaking contest at Portland Saturday, May 18. Millie was en tered as the speech champion from southern Oregon. Award night at the Eagle Point High school will be held Monday, May 27, at 8 p.m. in the school gymnasium. Awards will be made for achievements during the year scholastically and in sports. The public has been in vited and no admission being charged. The Industrial Art shop will be open before and after the program for viewing projects. Baccalaureate services will be held Sunday, May 26, at 8 p.m. The Rev. Kirkland D. West of Medford will speak. The Rev. Joseph Munshaw, Community Bible church, will give the invo cation, and the Rev. Gerald Smith of the Reese Creek church the benediction. The class flower is the rose and class colors are pink and silver. John Munshaw, son of the Rev. and Mrs. Joseph Munshaw, is expecting to return to school the latter part of the week after being out of school for more than three weeks with the measles and complications from the mea sles. ' Mr. and Mrs. Mark W. Hoefft moved into their new home at 29 West Fifth st. recently. The home was purchased from Don Kimmel. Mr. and Mrs. Bert Nelson en- i tertained Mr. and Mrs. Glenn ' Waddell at dinner Sunday, May 12. The Community Bible Church Vacation Bible school will start Monday, June 3, at 9 a.m. end ing June 14 with a program in the evening. The sessions each week day are from 9 to 11:30 a.m. for children four through high school age. Mrs. Maude Morrow from Or ting, Wash., has been visiting her brother, W. L. Hurst, and two nieces, Josephine Overdick and Lucille Edgerton, in Eagle Point recently. Mrs. Morrow left for her home in Washington Wednesday. Donna Hoefft celebrated her 10th birthday with a party in her new home. Invited guests were Barbara Hopper, Susan Hayes, Dee Dee Sweet, Sharon Short, Lynn Stewart, J. D. Sweet, Billy Keaton, Billy and Tommy Hoefft, Ricky Chamber lain, and Larry Hickman. Cake and ice cream were served and various games played. The same evening Mr. and . Mrs. Gilbert Ruozi and children, Patty and Sherry, arrived from Medford with Mrs. Ethel Hoefft and Mrs. Maude Lockwood to visit. Other visitors were Mr. n4 Mrc Pnlrav Smith -Tr fnr- Buddy Poppy Sale Scheduled May 31 Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct their annual Buddy Pop py sale throughout the nation Friday and Saturday, May 24 and 25. The annual sale started In 1922. The poppies are assembled by disabled veterans in govern ment hospitals. One cent of each contribution is given for support of the VFW national home for widows and orphans and 1H cent is given' to state rehabilita tion service. More than $8,000, 000 of the poppy sale funds have been used in carrying out as sistance to veterans by national and department service officers. More than half of all money received from the sale of Buddy Poppies remains with the local posts and auxiliaries for welfare aid they dispense in their own areas. (IB An ex cited housewife telephoned Zoo Director Raymond Gray Wednes day about a huge bird that was perched on her chimney top mak ing strange loud noises. Gray told Mrs. William Loe wenberg not to worry about it. That's just a male peacock that strayed from the zoo after being spurned in love, Gray said. He explained that when a male peacock is thwarted in love he "gets mad and goes off and sulks." He said the mating season will be over in about two weeks and the peacock then will return to the zoo. Bird Builds Nest; RAF Truck Slays Put Laarbrueck, Germany Iff) American photo crews arriving here for reconnaissance exercise "Royal Flush" were startled by British refusal to move a RAF photo laboratory truck blocking the entrace to a parking area. "The truck stays there, guv' nor," a RAF sergeant told them. "This area is strictly for the birds." A chaffinch had built its nest on the truck's hood. Nickel Exploration Work Being Surveyed Cave Junction John White, president of Chemical and Met allurgical Enterprises, Inc., of Salt Lake City, arrived Monday to survey nickel exploration work being done on Woodcock Mountain. The Salt Lake City company, together with the New Delhi Mining company of Toronto, Canada, have formed the Nickel Corporation of America, which is conducting the extensive core drilling and laboratory work fiecsssary before a refining plant can be planned in this area. According to reports, findings, so far have either equaled or ex ceeded expectations on amount and grade of the nickel ore on Woodcock. Work on Eight Dol lar mountain has not yet been started except for preliminary road surveys and clearing. Cottage Grove Man Named GOP Chairman Salem Loran L. Steward, Cottage Grove lumberman, has been appointed Republican state finance chairman by J. F. Short, Salem,' GOP state chairman. Stewart, who takes office im mediately, replaces Stanley Go odell, Portland, who resigned re cently He served three terms in the state legislature as a rep resentative from Lane county.
