Steel, who became the park's second superintendent and who later served as park i commissioner until his death in 1934. As a boy in Kansas, Steel had learned of this deep blue lake from a newspaper wrap ped around his school lunch. When in 1885 he first stood at the rim and viewed Crater Lake, he was so impressed he deter mined that one day this should become a national park. In 1886 most of the 250 square mile area which is now Crater Lake National park was with drawn from the public domain. Sixteen years passed, however, before the true worth of this mountain, with its virgin forests, its glacier-cut valleys, and the lake with its steep, high walls was widely recognized. Early' Travel Light During the early years travel to the parkwas light. In 1916, the year in which the National Park service was established, only 12,265 visitors entered the park less than 3.5 per cent of the 359,840 in 1956. It is esti mated that in 1966, Crater Lake will be host to some 600,000 vis itors. In line with the great in crease in travel to all National parks, a program of expansion and Improvement has been un dertaken known as Mission 66 so named because it is to be completed by 1966, the 50th anniversary of the service. The National Park service is dedicated to the preservation of the parks, and is charged with maintaining them and directing their use in such a way asjto leave unimpaired their original values. Mission 66 developments Administration Disarmament Split in Open Washington (IB A serious split within the Eisenhower ad ministration on a possible disar mament agreement with Russia appears to have broken into the open. On one side was Adm. Arthur W. Radford, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff. He told newsmen Sunday he does not think Russia "can be trusted" to carry out disarmament agree ments, and indicated he will bat tle for "fool-proof arrange ments before agreeing to any "open' skies" disarmament in spection plan. Siassen Optimistic On the optimistic side was Harold E. Stassen, President Ei senhower's special disarmament adviser. He said on his return here Friday from London disar mament talks that this country and Russia are "closer to agree ment" on first-step moves for aerial inspection and arms re ductions. But he warned there are still many difficulties to be solved. ' . Eisenhower and Secretary of State John Foster Dulles both have spoken recently with guarded optimism about pros pects for a first-step arms limi tation - inspection deal with the Soviet Union. The President told his news conference last week he believes the Russians "are now i growing more serious about dis armament, partly because of an economic pinch. Radford To Speak Out Radford, who is slated to re tire in August, has been report ed ready to speak out against dis armament after his departure from the Eisenhower "team." Returning from a 24-day in spection tour of South America Sunday, he was reluctant at first to comment on the London dis armament talks. Asked, however, if he though Russia could be trusted to carry ! out disarmament agreements, he replied: "No, I'don't think they can be trusted to carry out anything." In addition there will be a ser ies of roadside exhibits which will make the park story direct available to the visitor. An in creased staff also will be neces sary, and is planned for in all departments, as is additional em ploye housing. Queen Elizabeth's Plans To Be Revealed Washington (111 American officials said Monday that a deci sion will be announced soon on whether Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip will visit the Unit ed States this year or not. They said the chances are the Queen and her husband. Prince Philip, will come this year but that the decision is up to the British government. The United States is anxious to have the Queen come. Offi cials said President Eisenhower would extend an invitation im mediately if the British decide she should make the visit this year. John Cabot and his son, Se bastian, who reached the Labra dor coast in 1497, were Venitian explorers in the service of England. Owners of 1957 Cars Should Read Manual Madison, Wis. (IB Owners of 1957 cars will have to study their, new car manuals closely when they feel like tinkering with the latest innovations and gadgets. New paint finishes of acrylic lacquer dissolve if the wrong kind of cleaner is used and it's no longer advisable to jack the car up with a conventional bumper jack. Some bumper assemblies buckle or displace under the car's weight when they are used and a hydraulic jack is prefer able. Caution is urged when towing cars because of limited road clearance due to overhang. Even towing or starting may result in costly damage to models having automatic transmissions. Unless the manual indicates otherwise, a booster battery should be used to start stalled cars. WHY THE BOAT? Battle Creek, Mich. (IB A motorist with a boat on top of his car said he was stopped Sun day by a sheriff's deputy with a sense of humor. He said the of ficer wanted to know whether. in view of the heavy rainfall of the past few days the man was going fishing or just preparing for an emergency.
