May 17. 1937 t. - V"'- f ' HI Mill Millie Haynie , (Classic Photo) Student Enters State Contest Miss Millie Haynie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Troy Haynie of Shady Cove and a senior at Eagle Point high -school, will leave for Portland today to com pete in the state elimination pub lic speaking contest sponsored by the supreme lodge. Knights of Pythias, with Talisman lodge of Medford as a co-sponsor. Miss Haynie, winner of the recent contest between Jackson nd Josephine county entrants " will be accompanied by her mother. They will be guests of the grand lodge of Oregon, Knights of Pythias, during their stay in the Rose City. The con test will be held in the Pythian building in Portland. The winner at Portland will be eligible to enter the section 5 contest to be held at Spokane, Wash., Saturday, June 29, and the winners from the 6 sections over the nation will compete in the finals at Memphis, Tenn., August 11, for $3,500 in scholar ships of their choice. Bert Sim mons is Miss Haynie's teacher at Eagle Point High school and Don Lacy, Crater High school, Central Point, is Jackson county contest chairman for the local Knights of Pythias. Miss Haynie, Bill Frake, Med ford, and Sandra Sawyer, second and third place winners in the local contest, were honored at a dinner given by Talisman lodge at the Jackson hotel April 23. They were presented gifts. Wesleyan Guilds Plan Ceremonies Joint installation of officers of Gladamson, Ruth Esther and Ashland Wesleyan Service guilds will be held in Meeker Memorial chapel of First Meth odist church Monday, May 20, at 7:30 p.m. Mrs. Jessie Minear will be in stalling officer. Following the ceremony Dr. Raymond E. Balcomb will ad dress the group. Final Meeting Of Lincoln PTA Held at School As a climax to a successful year, the final meeting of Lin-' coin Parent-Teacher association saw the "u n v e i ling" of the school's new risers when the band and orchestra presented the program using the risers. Both musical organizations of the school presented several selec tions, the band under the direc tion of Mrs. Bartlett Officers for the coming year were installed by Mrs. John Ben son, a past president of the Lin coln unit and past parlimentar ian for the Oregon Congress of Parents and Teachers. Taking office were Ted McLean, presi dent; Mrs. John Lusk, vice-president; Herbert Wing, secretary; Mrs. Virgil Stickley, treasurer. Retiring officers were John Weber, president; Mrs. Eric de Place, secretary; Mrs. Joe Jones, treasurer. Mr. Weber presented corsages to the installing officer and the officers who had served with him. A past presidents pin wa3 presented to Mr. Weber by Mrs. Jones. St. Louis Sinfoniatia will present tonight at 8 o'clock in the Medford High school audi torium for Jackson County Ciric Music association. On Vacation Mrs. George Distell left Mfsd- ford Thursday for a short vaca tion at the Distell's cabin on the west fork of Trail creek. Ac companying her were her three grandchildren, Karen, Nola Lee and Steven Dyer. They will return to Medford Tuesday when Mrs. Distell will port on the convention of . the resume her duties at Sacred Oregon Congress of Parents and Teachers which he had attended It was announced that another musical instrument had been purchased for the band during this school year. This is a pro- jeqt that is continued each year. Mr. Weber thanked the mem bers of his executive committee and the teachers for thir sup port and participation during the activities of . the past year. Mrs. Austin Caldwell's cub scout den presented the colors. Room count was won by Mrs. Ethel Chastain's third grade. Refreshments were served by members of the executive com mittee with Mrs. Don Moser, hospitality chairman, in charge. New Feathercombs On Market Here Medford women and girls who have been reading and hearing about the new grip tooth hair comb called "Feathercombs" will be interested to know that they have been secured by Mann's department store after a wait of several months. The new combs are made of spring steel in different lengths and colors and have been praised by women and girls all over the United States for their useful ness. Tiny but strong, the new little combs can be used in many different ways in the hair and are practically invisible. For the first eight months of manufacture, the combs were sold only at Marshall-Field stores, the firm having a monop oly. Later they were released to one large department store in each state, . Heart hospital. Grange Dance Roxy Ann Grange will spon sor a public square dance Satur day, May 18, at the Grange hall on Spring street. The dance will begin at 8:30 p.m. with Gordon Kershaw and Kenneth Howe calling.
