HARDTOP CARS TO ROLL THIS SATURDAY EVENING After two unsuccessful at tempt last week end, the hard top suto drivers are ready for their grand openinsj this Satur day night at the Valley View speedway. Headlining this weeks pro gram will be the presentation of trophies to the top 12 drivers of last year. The delay in opening has not lessened the enthusiasm of the drivers. An even largr number of cars than the 25 on hand last week is anticipated. The schedule for the night will be the standard one, a main event, a semi-main, three heat reaces and A and B trophy dash es. Time trials are set for 7 p.m. First 'race will roll at 8 p.m. Car To Be Ready Leadfoot Lou Kurz, who was out in Don Hooper's M-77 last week, has said his car will be ready to roll this week and will have a bright orange and white paint job. Crock Hunter also expected to have his weird cre ation painted red and white. Hunter's 15-X looks like a stray from the Bonnerville salt flats. Wally Cannon of Ashland was out at the track Wednesday night giving his new, blue Ford coupe a shakedown run and will have it on hand this week. Bobby Jenkins is donating his fourth-place trophy to an avid follower, Pat Pathman, who is confined to a San Francisco hospital with a serious illness. SPORTS il Bears Score 8th Straight By UNITED PRESS It looks like Manager Hub Kittle finally has his Yakima Bears rolling. The Bears topped Eugene 13-2 in Northwest league play Thurs day night for their - eighth straight victory. It leaves them two games up on second-place Tri-City which had been in front earlier in the season. Herm Lewis led Yakima's 12 hit attack with a homer, two singles and four runs batted in. Mike Coppola had a two-run homer, Vince Moreci a two-run triple and Tony Cannizzo a two run double. The scores at Pullman, Wash., were 3-1 for Oregon State and 3-2 for Washington State. Sophomore left hander Daryl Burke scattered seven Oregon hits to record his first victory for the Huskies. It was Oregon's second confer ence loss in 11 starts. Johnson Goes Route Syl Johnson went the route for Oregon State in the opener again the cellar-dwelling Cou gars, The classy Beaver pitcher limited the Cougars to four hits, while striking out five. At the plate Johnson tripled in the seventh, driving in Tom Bowen with the tie-breaking run. In the night-cap, Dave Gambee held the Cougars hitless for five innings but with a 2-0 lead, he was touched for two hits. An error, sacrifice fly and a field er's choice produced two Cougar runs. The talented left hander yield ed only two hits Thursday night as the Richmond Virginians nipped Havana, 2-1. The victory was the Vees eighth in their last nine games and enabled them to take a two-game lead over To ronto and Miami in the Inter national league pennant race. Ron' Blackburn, a 22-year-old right hander, also gave only two hits 'as his Columbus teammates downed Miami, 4-0. In other games. Humberto Robinson won his fifth decision as Toronto beat Rochester, 4-2, and Montreal whipped Buffalo, 10-4, behind the clutch pitching of Connie Grob. - . And a few more feats like those of Thursday will have the hitters asking who took the rabbit out of the lively ball: Bob Turley, a last-minute replacement for Whitey Ford, pitched a four-hitter and started the season's first triple play to give the New York Yankees a 3-0 victory over the Kansas City Athletics. Sandy Koufax, 21-year-old bonus whiz, equalled the season's single game high of 13 strike outs and yielded only four hits in powering the Brooklyn Dodg ers to a 3-2 decision over the Chicago Cubs. , . Lindy McDaniel, 21-year-old St. Louis Cardinal bonus boy, also flipped a four-hitter and gained his first major league strikeout with a 5-0 decision over the Philadelphia Phillies. Billy Pierce yielded three homers but had an eight-hitter for his fifth win in the Chicago White Sox' 8-3 triumph over the Professional Hockey Coaching Great Dies Montreal (IP) Dick Irvin, one of the most successful coaches in the history of the National Hockey league, died at his home here Thursday night. He was 64. The "Silver-Haired Fox" of the rinks, who guided his teams to four Stanley Cup championships and enjoyed his greatest success as coach of the powerful Mon treal Canadiens, had been in ill health for some time.
