May 17, 1937 Oregon State Boasts Sports in Quantity Corrallii (W Medford was farored to retain its Class A-l championship as nearly 400 athletes gathered here to day for opening of the annual Oregon State High School track and field meet. In the Class A-2 division, the field was wide open. Last year't champ, Redmond, has moved into the A-l division. Class B schools will hold a state meet of their own at Springfield Saturday. Oregon State College, Corval lis Those who enjoy their sports entertainment in large quantities could get it on visiting Corvallis and the Oregon State .college campus this week end. Here's what was in store: 1. State high school Class A-l and A-2 track and field cham pionships, with perennial-champion Medford again in the driv er's seat and some 380 entries Ted Williams Awaits Decision Of AL President Boston M Boston Red Sox slugged Ted Williams today awaited American league action on his latest display of tempera ment carelessly heaving a bat in disgust at fouling out. An umpire's report on the in cident VTednesday was forward ed to league President Will Har ridge in Chicago. A league de cision whether to fine or repri mand Williams, or both, was ex pected shortly. The bat-flinging episode, pro voked by the star hitter's batting slump, was in violation of league rules and a directive issued re cently by Harridge, who report edly was alarmed that a bat might bounce into the stands and injure someone. The report had an immediately soothing effect on the fiery Wil liams, who kept a firm grip on his bat though he struck out three times in a row Thursday before getting a fluke double. He carried the club back to the dugout. primed for action. Preliminaries were slated today with finals Saturday at Bell field. 2. State high school tennis tournament on the OSC courts, with 125 top prep netters entered headed by defending singles titlists Harry Doyle, Grant of Portland, and Patti Miller, Wash ington of Portland. Matches began this morning, with cham pions to be crowned on Satur day afternoon. 3. Final spring football game scrimmage for the Oregon State Beavers, defending Pacific Coast conference champions, at Parker stadium immediately following the track meet. Coach Tommy Prothro's single-wing varsity goes against T-formation oppon ents, with All-America tailback candidate Joe Francis in the driver's seat. 4. Northern division dual tennis, sending Washington's de fending champions against runner-up Oregon State, on Satur day morning on the OSC courts. Beaver ace Jimmie Jackson meets Don Flye of Washingtoo in feature match. 5. Northern division dual golf finale at the Corvallis Country club Friday, with Washington favored to defeat Oregon State. All told, it means well over 600 athletes both high school I and college seen in action at Oregon State this week end in a mass invasion of the campus. Medford and Redmond, re spective A-l and A-2 track chan pions last year, again brought strong clubs to Corvallis. The Black Tornado has won four straight titles, 12 in the last 17 years and have finished first eight out of the last nine times. OSC Rooks Divide With Clark JC Vancouver. Wash. IB Clark Junior college and the Oregon State Rooks split a baseball dou bleheader here Thursday, the Rooks winning the opener, 6-2, and Clark taking the nightcap, 3-0. Helen Briley Winner Of Horse Show Prize Grants Pass Mrs. Helen Bri ley, 722 Hartley rd., Medford, won a first place- trophy here last week in the Southern Ore gon Spring Horse Show. Her award was won in the Appaloosa Indian costume class. Mrs. Briley also has won fourth place in a photography contest of the Western Horse man magazine. She won a' $15 award for entering a photograph of her horse. She competed with about 2,600 other entries from 44 states. Boxing Results Sacramento. Calif. Bob Satterfield, 186. The marks were .set by Pat Flaherty last year. The Irish man from Chicago also won the race but will be on the side lines this year. He was severely hurt in a crackup last summer. The new car owned by Nino Farina was wrecked iri Andrews' accident. Speculation on top ' perform ance ranged from 145 to 147 m.p.h. Much depended on the weather.
