Sen. Carl Francis, Dayton Re publican, had moved the bill be sent to Ways and Means with specific instructions to eliminate amendments which he said might adversely affect the amount of money received for 4-H and FFA activities on the local level. The Senate passed Senate bill 316 to bring public employees under the unemployment com pensation act. Sen. Dan Dimick explained that under this bill as it now stands, coverage for state employees would be com pulsory. But coverage for public employees of counties, cities and such other agencies and drainage and irrigation districts would be optional. Jackson County, Oregon. D. F. Huson City Recorder POINT Around Hollywood Hollywood U.R) New bobby-soxers' idol Anthony Perkins has latched onto Hollywood's ne w f a d "Sunday sing ers," actors who are "voc alizing" on re cords and TV. P e r k ins" job these days is making love to that senior s' i z e glamour Aline Mosby queen, Italy's Sophia Loren, in "Desire Under the Elms." But between scenes on the Paramount set, Tony is busy composing titles for his forthcoming record album. "How about 'Songs to Pull Taffy By?'," he reflected as he relaxed under the set's elm tree today. Such a scene is usual around movietown. Since Tab Hunter found startling success by record ing "Young Love," actors who never had warmed up their pipes before are angling for record contracts. Despite a voice described by one critic as sounding like a sick fog-horn, Robert Mitchum is new recording star. Natalie Wood has signed to sing on re cords; Jerry Lewis' Al Jolson type recordings are best sellers. Jeff Chandler and Lizabeth Scott are other "Sunday singers." Very Nervous Perkins first recorded a song from a TV show that pushed him to movie stardom, "Joey." As he recalls, 'I was very nervous and it came out badly and it sold badly, too." "However," he continued. "I recorded another song, 'Friend ly Persuasion' (from the movie that won him an Oscar nomina tion). I was a little nervous and not with it and it went badly and sold badly. "The record company sug gested rock n' roll so I did that but I was very nervous, etc.," sighed Tony who, his friends say, is often a nervous young man. "But a couple of weeks ago I sang on the Ed Sullivan show and it went better so now I'm doing an album of six numbers. At the first recording there was such a horrible mixture of ob stacles that I did the song very well and wasn't nervous at all SUITED HIM TO T Los Angeles (IB Alvin W. Loves Singing The young actor has baritone voice that he thinks is a "com bination of early Mel Torme and (trumpet player) Chet Bak er," whatever that means. Lanky, Gary Cooper-ish Perk ins sees nothing amiss with act tors invading the singing field, even if they can't sing. After all, he says, such singers as Frank Sinatra and Dorothy Danridge have developed into fine actors. "I think it's good I like to hear actors sing, and I think the public is fascinated by the idea," he said. "In fact, I like singing better than acting. It's easier. I'd love to be in a musical."
