Dulles has not been willing to permit Americans generally to travel in Red China so long as Chinese Communists hold Americans as "political hostages." JACKSON United Press Correspondent New York U.R) In the spring of 1917, with the world at war, a former major league baseball player stood in a New York tabernacle and "convert ed" 93,264 persons to Christ. The late Billy Sunday breath ed hellf ire - and - brimstone to more than a million listeners in 10 weeks, and before leaving the stage he announced, "We piled up so many home runs to heaven that the devil was out of the game." Now Billy Graham has come to town, his job cut out for him. The devil is still here. Not for 40 years has the big town, with its full quota of cyn ics and sinners, paid such heed to a man of religion. The 38-year-old North Caro lina evangelist has waited and prepared for seven years for the moment which arrives at 7:30 p.m. (EDT) Wednesday. Biggest Battle In an arena recently reserved for the circus and tag wrestling, on an avenue lined with bars, in a city where only seven people in a hundred share his Protes tant faith and about three out of five profess no faith at all Graham will launch the biggest battle of his meteoric career. It is not merely a fight to "win New York for Christ." When the spotlight falls on Graham, Bible in hand, in Madi son Square Garden, thousands will be praying with him that the long-awaited "New York Crusade" can kindle the spark of a genuine religious revival across America. Graham expects to pack the Garden to its 20,000 capacity seven nights a week for the next six and one-half weeks, and probably longer. By June 30 he expects more than 800,000 per sons to have heard him in person. But his crusade promises to top Sunday's phenomenal suc cess and local church leaders believe it will have more lasting effects. . . - -.- .. Millions will see Graham on a national network (ABC-TV) which will televise his Garden appearances for one hour from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. (EDT) for four Saturdays starting June 1. Like Billy Sunday, Billy Gra ham preaches the "old-time reli gion." But while Sunday roused his listeners with fiery threats of damnation, delivered in shout ing metaphors, Graham accentu ates the positive. Sunday excoriated his listen ers: "Come on, you forces of in iquity ' that have made the church a cuspidor and a door mat to wipe your dirty feet on! Come on, you assassins of char acter; come on, you sponsors of harlotry." Always Sincere Graham also preaches against sin, against alcohol, against the devil. But with never-questioned sincerity, he preaches for Christ. He emphasizes the need for a "decision for Christ" which will open to men this kind of heaven: "What a glorious place it will be with streets of gold, the gates of pearl . . . and the trees bearing a different kind of fruit every month. Think of that twelve crops a year!" Of hell, he warns, "whatever it is going to be is so horrible that it cannot be expressed in the language of man." Graham' will preach against the 13 bars which he can see from the Eighth ave. entrance to Brooding Husband Kills Wife's Doctor Oakland, Calif. (IP) The brooding husband of a woman who committed suicide three years ago Monday shot and killed her doctor, a nationally-known lung specialist. The physician. Dr. Harold G. Trimble, 61, was shot five times by Saul Sydney Klass, a retired jeweler. Trimble was a former vice president of the National Tuberculosis Association and past president of the California Tu berculosis and Health Associa tion. Klass, 53, drove away from the scene, but surrendered to pur suing police 11 minutes after the shooting. Homicide Inspector Paul Potts said the greying, mild - mannered man accused Trimble of responsibility for his wife's suicide. " " "I killed the s.o.b. because he raped my wife," Klass told po lice. "He drove her to suicide. He has done the same with other patients." Dr. J. Lloyd Eaton, Trimble's associate for 33 years, angrily denied Klass charges. Audience of 12 Million The show business trade news paper Variety advised Graham, "What the majority of New York citizens would like to be saved from is Big Boredom rath er than Big Sin." ' In the New York area, Gra ham has an audience of 12 mil lion.
