MeCANN United Press Correspondent The current conference of Arab kings in Iraq promises to i.-.ark an important new turn in Middle Eastern affairs. King Feisal of Iraq is playing host to King Saud of Saudi Arabia. These two monarchs are to be joined by King Hussein of Jordan, who with their help has just de feated a pro Russian, anti- Charles M. McCano Western plot against his throne. Dispatches from Baghdad, Fei sal'g capital, indicate that the result is pretty certain to be a new line-up in the relations of the principal Arab countries. This line-up would include Lebanon. It would bring togeth er four of the nine countries in the Arab League. It would mean a diplomatic victory for the United States and its allies, and a corresponding defeat for Pres ident Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt and for Soviet Russia. Iraq and Lebanon are pro Western. Iraq is the only Arab member of the so-called Baghdad Pact, formed to oppose Commu nist aggression and penetra tion in the Middle East. Its mem bers are Iraq, Turkey, Iran, Pak istan and Great Britain. The United States has all but joined it outright.- - Saudi Arabia and Jordan have been listed as "neutralists." But King Saud has been swinging around to cooperation with the Western Allies since his visit to Washington in January. King Hussein has had some strong sec ond thoughts about his neutral ism since pro-Russian political leaders in Jordan tried, -with the help of Egypt and Syria, to over throw him.- Leadership Hopes Vanish The way things look now, Nas er"s hope of making himself the leader of the Arab world, and to unite the Arab countries in a neutralist policy which really would be anti-Western, has fi nally vanished. This hope which Nasser long entertained began to get dimmer when in order to get weapons which the United States denied him he turned to Soviet Russia. Communism is a threat to every king, for one thing. For another, Saudi Arabia and Iraq receive immense revenues from their oil resources, which are ex ploited by Western countries. Also Nasser worried King Saud and King Feisal by his epen pressf indt e a m p a 1 f h against Hussein, whieh the pro Russian, anti-Western leaders of Syria actively supported. Saud and Feisal suspected that they, too, might become targets. Cooperation in Crisis When young King Hussein challenged his political enemies in Jordan, who seemed in full control of the country, to a show down both Saud and Feisal pledged him their full support, with military aid if necessary. The conference of kings in Iraq is a natural sequel to Hus sein's victory. "It looks as if 'the result can only be to lessen Nasser's influ ence in the Arab world and to strengthen the position of the Western Allies. Naturally, there would be no formal announce-, ment of any such development. But Nasser and the Soviet lead ers who are trying, so hard to penetrate the Middle East, will realize painfully what it means. Lake Superior has a" maxi mum, depth of 1.180 feet.
