The ma-1 a common headache ... the ority of new homes have at! bathroom bottleneck . . . can be least one-and-a-half bathrooms Owners of older houses complain of lack of facilities. Eathroom improvements not only add comfort to a house, but 80 Per Cent of Homes Inadequately Lighted "I couldn't see where I was going." is the common lament of household accident victims af ter they've tumbled down the stairs, bumped into a door, or barked their shins on a chair. Because more than 80 per cent of this nation's homes are in adequately lighted, many acci dents occur in the home! Falls for instance, account for more than half of all fatal acci dents and kill 14,500 persons annually. Many of these falls result from poor lighting in stairways, halls and especially bedrooms and kitchens, where most home accidents occur. Poor lighting should be corrected in any home improvement project. To be safe you must see what you're doing and where you're going! This requires light and much more light than the aver age home today provides. Prevent accidents in your home by providing proper light ing today. WINDOW DRESS-UPS You can glamorize your win dows by adding new valances or blinds. Plastic, bamboo, alum inum vertical or horizontal dra peries are durable, attractive and come in a wide range of col corrected by adding a second complete bathroom, installing a half-bath, or powder room, or by making the most of the ex isting bathing area by partition ing and adding fixtures. Cost of Adding The cost of adding extra plum bing can be reduced by careful planning. Locating an extra bath or powder room as near as pos sible to the master bath saves time and money. Putting facili ties side by side, or placing them above or under each other re duces the cost of long runs of pipe. In a one-story .house, saving can be had by installing a pow der room near the laundry room, bathroom, or other plumbing. In a two-story house, it's more eco nomical to put a second full bath room alongside, below or above the master bathroom. In a new home, the plumbing can be "roughed-in" in such a way that additional fixtures can be installed easily and econom ically whenever the family needs them. Where lack of space is a prob lem, careful selection of fixtures will provide a complete bath room in small areas such as: al coves, back-to-back closets, or under a staircase. 1 A half-bathroom or powder room should be installed near centers of heaviest traffic flow in the house. A lavatory design ed to fit a corner will save space and add a unique style note to the powder room. By building partitions in the existing bathroom, the full use fulness of each fixture can be exploited. ' , . '- . . ' ' House More Than 10 Years Old May Have Poor Wiring L . By American-Standard. Here's a Home Improvement reminder about electrical facts and figures in your home. If your house is over ten years eld, there's a good chance that it's among the 20,000,000 in the United States today with inad equate wiring. If the lights dim or flicker when the automatic toaster is Many New Homes Have Softeners prospective home buyers in known "hard water areas won't have to worry about this prob lem, for many of the new homes will be equipped with water soft eners. The Water Conditioning Re search council reports that home owners can count the savings in dollars and cents when they use water softeners. The council says: "The average amount of hard ness for water throughout the United States is ten grains and just seven grains of hardness costs the average family of four S24 more a year in soap." Hard water also builds up scale on the inside of water pipes faster than soft water ever does. Over a period of time, a quarter inch of scale could reduce the flow of water. Water pipes en crusted with scale become insu lated and don't deliver heat effi ciently. A water softener will help save your fuel bill. Softened water is a better cleaner than hard water and is easier on your clothes. Softening ten grain water makes a thirty- five per cent increase in longev ity for linens. Home buyers in ' hard water areas can have their builders ar range to install water softeners before they move in, if this has not already been done. turned on, and if the bread in the toastef pops up only half browned, it's probable that your wiring is overloaded. The reason for the overload today is simple . . . there are more appliances in use today than there were ten years ago. Such things as television sets were virtually non-existant in 1946. Today there are 33,200,000 of them in use. Eight Appliances There are 17,000,000 more radios in use today. Most homes today have a minimum of eight kinds of appliances: radio, TV, refrigerator, iron, electric clock, washer, toaster, and vacuum cleaner. Put too many of these on one circuit and, poof, a fuse is blown! Many American homes are chugging along with only thirty or sixty amperes service. Elec tricians say that one-hundred amperes are barely ample. A thirty ampere entrance ser vice is one in which a maximum of 3,600 watts are available in the house at any one time. Wattage Rating The wattage rating of an auto matic toaster is 1,100 watts, the hand iron 1,000 watts, coffee maker 1,000 watts. TV set 300 watts, a broiler, 1,450 watts, a roaster 1,650 watts and a refrig erator 300 watts. Turn most of these on all at once, also a washing machine vith 1,200 watts and an auth- matic ironer with 1,650 watts, and you may blow another fuse. Electricians say each electric circuit in a house should have a twenty per cent space capacity, over and above the probable maximum load. The cost of rewiring, is sur prisingly small. If there is any doubt about the adequacy of your electrical wiring, have it checked by an expert now! NEW BATHROOM The old bathroom was drab, dark, crowd ed and lacked style. The re modeled bathing area shows modern, cast iron shower and bath Combination, offering ex tended rim seat, low sides and flat bottom to facilitate bathing New lavatory adds, beauty, has a wide counter space, roomy bowl and built-in towel racks. The sanitary water closet oper ates quietly. Full use was made of existing space and storage shelves were added for conven ience. Fixturi-American Standard. Water Heater is Used Most Often Do you ever have to forego the pleasure of a shower when you want one? Do you have to plan your housework around your hot water supply? If so, then you are putting up' with an out-dated water heater, some thing you won't find in the new homes being shown. Increasing use of home laun dry and automatic dish washing equipment has brought with it a need for larger size water heat ers in most homes. Properly sized tanks large enough to provide a margin of extra capacity to meet maximum current as well as possible future demands. Water heaters range in size from 30 to 100 gallons. The size should be determined by: the amount of water needed and the recovery capacity of the heater. This is the ability of the heater to replenish hot water as fast as it is used. With a fast recovery heater you can use a smaller tank than you'd imagine. Many of the new tanks also offer the advantage of dial con trols. You'll find a wide choice of tank materials to suit your local water supply conditions. CURVED SURFACE Despite its strength and concrete-like composition, asbestos cement board is sufficiently flex ible to be used over moderately curved surfaces. It is a favored material for arched ceilings, cur ved walls and other irregular areas. It comes in large size sheets that are easy to handle, cut and nail.
