Justin Smith Engaged to Wed Mr. and Mrs. Glen Guiley of 605 Park street, Medford, an nounce the engagement of their daughter, Kathleen Anne, to Lt. Justin Meredith Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Justin B. Smith of 21 Geneva street, Medford. Miss Guiley is a graduate of the Medford High school and is a sophomore at the University of Oregon. Mr. Smith is serv ing with the United States Air Force and is stationed at Tyn dall Air Force Base, Panama City, Fla. He is a graduate of Medford High school and the University of Oregon. No date has been set for the wedding. Miss Cynthia Jackson (Romaine Skelton photo) Cynthia Jackson And Patrick Ford To Wed in Autumn A number of engagements have been announced in recent days, with weddings' planned for summer and fall. Mr. and Mrs. Glenn L. Jack son, 117 Greenway Circle, an nounce the engagement of their daughter, Cynthia, to Patrick Ford, son of Mr.' and Mrs. Wil liam A. Ford, of Stockton, Calif. Miss Jackson was graduated from the Katharine Branson school, Boss, Calif. She is also a graduate of Wellesley college, Wellesley, Mass., and then spent a year studying at the London School, of Economics, London, England. . - " Mr. Ford is a graduate of St. Mary's and St. Agnes schools, Stockton, and has his Bachelor of Arts degree from Santa Clara college. He is now in his final year at Santa Clara law school. The'" wedding is . planned for September. Carpenters Home From Island Visit Mr. and Mrs. Alfred S. V. Carpenter returned last week to their home, Topsides, on Old Stage road, after an absence of more than three months. They spent considerable time with their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Burton A. Daugh erty, at St. Croix, Virgin islands. During their stay a daughter, Ann, was born to .the couple. After returning to the United States the Carpenters visited Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Carpenter, a brother and sister-in-law, and Mr. and Mrs. Harlow Carpenter in Carmel, Calif., the latter couple being in Carmel from their home on the east coast. They also spent some time with Mrs. Carpenter's brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. John Scott, at Palm Springs. Miss Porter attended Oregon State . college and is a home economics teacher at McLough lin Junior -High school. She is a member of Chi Omega social sorority. Mr. Padgham attended the University of California at Davis, Calif., and was graduated from Oregon State college. He is a member of Alpha Gamma Rho social fraternity and is em ployed by the Thor corpora tion, engineering firm in Whit tier, Calif. No date has bene set for the wedding. A silver tea will be given for the chorus of Zuleima temple, Thursday, May 9, from 2 until 5 p.m. at the home of Mrs. E Ronald Rice, 215 Saginaw drive. Hostesses for the event will, be officers of the temple, assisted by the patrol. The tea is being given to help defray expenses for the trans portation of the temple chorus to the supreme session of the daughters of the Nile to be held in San Antonio, Tex. June 2-6 All members of the temple and friends are invited to at tend. The temple will hold a stated session at the Masonic hall in Grants Pass Saturday, May 11 at 1 o'clock. The annual lunch eon honoring past queens of the group will be at 12 noon. The temple chorus will be in charge of the luncheon, assisted by the Illinois Nile club. Reservations are to be made by telephoning Mrs. Bill Laurine, SP 3-2930. Past queens from this area, who will be honored at the luncheon are Mrs. C. A. Wine trout, Mrs. Lenora Kellom, Mrs. Margaret Fabrick, Mrs. Harry Nordwick, Mrs. O. L. Overmey er, Mrs. Wilber Arnold and Mrs. Raymond Reter. Mrs. H. S. Bullock, queen ot the temple, will make her offi cial visit to the Roseburg Nile club Friday, May 10. A dinner is planned for 6:30 p.m. at the Episcopal guild hall in Rose burg. Pupils Presented In Piano Recital Mrs. W. E. Hercher held a piano recital at her home on Stratford avenue Thursday, May 2. Parents and friends of the students attended, and refresh ments were served following the program. Pupils playing piano selections were Virginia Clark, Michael Andrews, Candy Chesny, Fredia Goltz, Sheryl Vaughn, Carol Little, Claudia Morgan, Sally Polk, Jeanne Bevis, Diane Tom lin, Linda Morlan, and Karen Morlan. To Hold Meeting Central Point Central Point Royal Neighbors will meet at the home of Mrs. D. R. Hendrick son on Merriman road, Central Point, Tuesday, May 7, at 1 p.m. Tour Announced As Benefit Event For Kindergarten Medford Junior Service league is continuing plans for a tour of houses to be held Tuesday, June 4, as a benefit for the league's kindergarten for hard of hearing children.. Hours will be from 2 to 5 p.m. and tea wiil be served at one of the homes. Although this type of benefit project is ' new to the Rogue Valley, it has been widely used in other cities as a means of raising money for charitable pro jects. Invitations are now being mailed to women's groups in the valley, and anyone interested is invited to take the tour. How ever, . reservations must neces sarily be limited. They may be made any time after May 20 by calling Mrs. Floyd Baker, SP2-7680, or Mrs. Gilbert Tumy, SP2-7400. Sh Mary's School Music Students To Give Programs Music students of St. Mary s High school will be featured in two programs Tuesday and Wed nesday, May 7 and 8, at 8 p.m. The Marian choir, which re ceived superior rating in the recent choral " festival here in Medford, will sing both nights, as will the Choralettes and Boys' Glee club. Tuesday night's soloists in cluding six pianists: Miss Sue Ann Autherford, Miss Lorraine Smith, Gary Haas, Randi Peter son, Miss Ellen McUne, and Miss Carol Robinson, and three vocalists Donald MacPherson Miss Judy Singler, and Richatd Cooper. Featured on Wednesday eve ning's program will be six more pianists, Miss Diane Franklin, Miss Martha Botchek, Miss De anna Hull, Michael Duggan, Miss Carol Hussong and' Miss Barbaia Lickess and Michael Feiss, Miss Donna Fredenburg; Jerry Flakus and Miss Margaret Brigden, vo calists. The public is invited to attend the programs which will be in St. Mary's gymnasium, Eleventh and Holly streets. Miss Wilson, a senior eco nomics major at Willamette uni versity, is treasurer of the senior class and senior scholar in eco nomics. The second annual junior-sen ior banquet high school students who do not attend proms is be ing sponsored by several of the Medford churches. It will be held May 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Jackson hotel. . Dinner, will be followed by an evening, of entertainment. - -. Theme for the banquet will be kept secret, as is the Medford high school prom each year. The banquet Ms held each year by the juniors from the sponsoring churches who .do not ordinarily go to the proms or whose relig ious preference, prevent . -them from doing so. Sinfonietta To Be Here The St. Louis Sinfonietta will present the next program fdt the Jackson county Civic Music association Friday, May 17, at 8 p.m. at the High school audit orium. This will be the last con cert of the 1956-57 season. ' Paul Schreiber, founder and musical director of the Sinfon ietta, is a violinist. Christine Stavrache is harpist with t h group and Kenneth Gordon is concertmaster. The group was started in 1937 by Mr. Schreiber to bring sym phonic music to a wider group of audiences. Miss Stavrache was first harpist with Bucharest Opera House orchestra and 'was solo harpist. of the New Yoik Little Orchestra Society during the past winter season. This is her third year with the Sinfonietta. Mr. Gordon first played with the NBC Symphony Orchestia conducted by Leopold Stokow ski in Carnegie hall. He studied in both the United States and Europe and during his Army ser vice gave more than 210 con certs for. UN troops, including a concert before President and Mrs. Synghman Rhee and the entire Korean cabinet. This is his fifth spring tour as concert. master and soloist with the St. Louis Sinfonietta. He is emplpyed by Dr. Earl Lawson.. : An early fall wedding is plan ned. - - Society Plans Pops Concert Here May 26 The Philharmonic Society of Southern Oregon will present a "pops" concert, Sunday, May 26, at 3 p.m. at the Medford High school auditorium. ' Following the same pattern as the Boston and Portland Pops orchestra concerts, a program of light music of a popular nature will be played. There will be two intermis sions with coffee and soft drinks being served. . . . . R. D. Werner, musical direc tor, has prepared a portion of the progcam which he calls "Popsorama." It will consist of five well known, short selec tions. On the program there will be five blank spaces for the titles and composers of these musical selections which will 1 a quiz for students in. the audi ence. ' Students will be asked to fill in the spaces and during the sec ond intermission will drop their programs in a box ,in the lobby. No programs will be accepted after that time. The programs, to qualify, should be signed by the contestant including address. Winners will receive a prize which will be announced by the board of directors.
