HORNBROOK Great Blue Herons Nesting Thursday April 25. 1957 By MRS. H. H. CHAPMAN Hornbrook Residents of the Henley area of Kornbrook are being treated to a rare sight these days. A colony of eight to 12 great blue herons has moved into the row of tall pine trees in the cemetery. Here, far from the usual location of their rook eries along the banks of streams or in marshy places, they are busy building their weird-looking nests. Seldom have they been leen around here this far inland from was home for the week end. The Ardon Burns family were din ner guests of the Dilleys Easter Sunday The Rev. Dan Cullinan of St. St. Joseph's Catholic church in Yreka was an Easter dinner guest at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Al Gregory. Johnson plans to return soon to take up residence here again. Mrs. Mollie Cole, Hornbrook justice of the peace, returned home Saturday from San Carlos, Calif., where she had been con valescing from her recent seri ous illness, at the home of her daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Seagraves. Her other daughter, Mrs. Helen Clark, also of San Carlos, brought her home. They were ac companied by Mrs. Clark's daughter, Dorian, and a friend, Theo Terwilliger. Mrs. Florence Grieve observed her 89th birthday April 10. She has been a resident of Horn brook for 58 years. Several friends visited her, among them Mrs. Gladys Knott and grand daughter, Vicki Knott, and Mrs. Emma Brown, all of Ashland, and several local people. Miss Lillian Rawhouser spent Easter week end with her father, Joe Rawhouser, in Eagle Point. Mr. and Mrs. Herb Dungey and children, Mary Pat and Christopher, of Medford were Easter dinner guests of her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Chapman. Weeds and Herbicides BY RAY HUBBELL County Weed Control Supervisor The weed problem is not an individual problem. It soon be comes a community problem. In terest and concern regarding it may extend to state and national levls. A farmer who uses impure seed, sells weedy hay (two good ways to spread weed seed) or al lows weeds to maintain them selves and mature in his fields and fence rows becomes a men ace to the entire community. Any factor which tends to de tract materially from the wealth or welfare of any considerable section becomes a state problem. Since such factors enter into interstate or international re lationships, they become of na ti mal importance. Importation Act The United States Importa tion act of 1912 applies to seeds brought into the United States from other countries. Its object is to prevent importation of for eign weeds. The majority of states now have weed laws to protect them from introduction of new weeds, or to provide for eradication of those which ave already proved objectionable. The law which was passed in 1921 by the Oregon Legislature provides for dividing the state into weed control districts. Jack son county's weed control dis trict was formed in 1938. No specific weeds were named, but in each district formed, the coun ty court provides a list of nox ious weeds. The duty of the weed control supervisor is to destroy or supervise destruction of these weeds. Control Program Following is the list of weeds Jackson county is attempting to control: white top, Russian knap w e e d, leafy sponge, puncture vine, Canada thistle, white cockel and marlahan mustard. With permission of property owners, these will be controlled wherever they are found. A general broad leaf weed con trol is maintained on all county roads with special consideration given the following: spiney cock- elbur, cockelbur, chicory, morn- ing glory, star thistle, poison hemlock, wild carrot and rag weed. Weed control districts alone cannot eradicate the weed pests from any state. There should be a sense of responsibility on the part of every citizen regarding this problem. A community ; which urges seed testing and use . of ure seed, encourages clean fields and roadsides and insists ; on intelligent handling of the problem can go far in solving it. Not only farmers, but all other citizens and future citizens should learn to know trouble s o m e weeds so tjiose already established may be controlled by the most efficient methods and new weeds be recognized and destroyed before becoming a problem.
