Despite the fact that tatting
the delicate practice of making
lace with a shuttle and thread
usually is relegated to the distaff
' side, 66-year-old Arthur Hollings
worth says he's been having fun
with it for more than half his
life.
He's been pursuing the hobby
painstakingly ever since his wife
showed him the tatting ropes 36
years ago, just after they were
married.
Hollingsworth, a retired rail
road worker, explained that
shortly after he took his bride
home, he found a tatting shuttle
in her trunk.
She Quit
"I insisted she show me how
it worked," he said, "and I have
been tatting ever since."
"When he learned, I quit,"
Mrs. Hollingsworth added.
Examples of the man's handi
work, the materials for which he
gets from Chicago, is scattered
both by gift aid commercial sale

have gone as far as England.
"I can really count on an aud
ience when I travel," related the
bespectacled craftsman. "On a
trip to St. Louis I tatted all the
way and the passengers would
come by and stop to watch me."

Dying Out
The busy-fingered man re
cently completed his 40th lace
infant's cap. He doesn't really
know who it is for, but likes to
have an extra one handy just in
case.
Arthur can even have fun with
tatting in times of trouble. Three
years ago, the Hollingsworths
were in a major auto accident in
which he sustained a broken jaw.
He took his tatting tools to the
hospital.
"I tried to teach one of the
nurses' aides," he recalled, "but
she never did catch on-It's very
easy to do just a series of half
hitches, over and under, then
over and under."
But as he sits working in an
overstuffed chair decorated with
his own doilies, a note of disap
pointment comes into Arthur's
voice. He pointed out, sadly:
"Tatting is as old as the phar
aohs of Egypt but it is becom
ing rarer and rarer."

child, or any other.
VICTOR A When I was in
Europe on military duty several
years ago, I got involved with a
girl I was not really in love
with. She became pregnant, but
when I told her I didn't love her,
she said she didn't want to mar
ry me. When I left she was about
to marry another man.
Three years ago I got married
to a girl I love very much. Re
cently we learned she can't have
children. When we discovered
this, I told her about what had
happened in the past and told
her that I would like to go back
to Europe and trace my own
child and adopt him or her. I am
sure I could do this because this
European girl is not the mother
ly type and she said that she
would like the child to be raised
in America.
Instead of being happy that
we can have a child of my own
blood, my wife was furious. She
says she doesn't want this"chi!d
or any other. I think she is just
jealous she can't have one.
Ethel A: I don't want his
told me this stor;- before we
were married, I doubt that I
would have married him. He
says it was "all nothing," but
I'm afraid can't look at it that
way.
Before he told me this story
I was thinking about adoption.
Of course, I would like to have
a family and I felt that a baby
is a baby, no matter what its
background. But now that I
think about it, I don't feel as
though I would like to have any
child that is the product of such
a relationship. What kind of her
edity can such a child have?
This thing has upset me so
that I do not know if I want to
go on with our marriage at all.
I don't know whether a marriage
without children makes any
sense. I don't know whether I
can ever feel any love for Vic
tor again. Our religion does not
permit divorce, but I just don't
feel I want to live with him any
more. The way I see it there is
nothing to hold us together.
The Council: Victor and
Ethel are both operating under
a serious shock at this time and
need to calm down. All their
hopes and plans for their life to
gether have suddenly been shat
tered and their reactions are
bitter, violent and foolish.
Victor's attitude is, in addition
vicious. He chose the moment
when his wife was suffering un
der a cruel blow to reveal a
story apparently aimed at furth
er destruction of her wounded
feelings. Ethel needed comfort
and the reassurance that he lov
es her and he chose to taunt her
with the fact that he has a child
of his own and to accuse her of
jealousy. His callous attitude to
Russian Children Serving
In Applied Education Test
Moscow U.R Approximately
500,000 Soviet secondary school
children are serving as "guinea
pigs" in a new experiment in
polytechnical applied education
this year.
The children are enrolled in
500 schools throughout the coun
try and are test cases in a pro
g r a m of increased technical
training worked out by the min
istry of secondary education.
The novel aspect of the pro
gram is that these children,
starting in the early grades and
going all the way up to the final
tenth grade, are spending as
much as one whole day a week
working partly in the school's
industrial or agricultural lab
oratories and partly in actual
factories under the supervision
of bona fide workers.
Under this program they are
spending considerably more time
in practical training than chil
dren in the other 10-year schools.
According to a description of
the experiment in the newspaper
Komsomolskaya Pravda, chil
dren in grades three and' four
(ages 9 and 10) are doing almost
twice as much craft work and
manual labor as before; grades
five through seven have several
additional hours of practical
work; in the upper grades, eight
through 10, a new subject called
"the fundamentals of produc
tion" has been introduced to ac
company several hours a week
of agricultural and industrial
laboratory practice.
Factory Study
The technical training which
the "guinea pig" students are re
ceiving is of a higher quality
than that in regular schools. In
addition to studying in larger,
better equipped laboratories, the
older children have a weekly
opportunity to "learn by doing"
alongside experienced factory
workers.
In the larger cities, such as
Moscow, Leningrad, Kuibyshev,
and Stalingrad, each experimen
tal school has established a work
ing relationship with one or
more factories. The workers vol
unteer to instruct the children
for several hours each week in
the general principles of indus
trial production as well as in a
particular job.
For example, school number
136 in Gorky is lucky enough

the child he would now attempt
to tear from a mother who has
suffered for "his" child exceeds
the bounds of human decency.
Victor must, first of all, get
over the idea that he has any
right to the child he rejected
when that child and its mother
needed him most. He needs to
learn much about love, respon
sibility and decent manly behav
ior and would profit by some
personal discussion with a cler
gyman. When he has learned
something about these matters,
Ethel will be better able to for
give him and love him.
Ethel should bide her time un
til Victor can become a real hu
man being and ?iusband. When
that happens, she will feel dif
ferently about her marriage and
the possibility of adopting a
child. Her religion will teach her
that she was right in the first
place "a baby is a baby" and
a new human soul, regardless of
the circumstances of its concep

Summer Camp
Lodge Construction
Planned in May
Construction of the main
lodge at the Medford Junior
Chamber of Commerce summer I
camp is expected to start early
in May.
Die Walsh, chairman of the
general camp committee of the
Jaycees, said Monday plans for
the camp at Lake of the Woods
are nearing c o m p letion. The
Timberrib company in Medford
is preparing plans. -Main
Lodge
The main lodge will be 102 i
feet .'ong and 40 feet wide, with
a col bined floor area of more
than 4000 square feet. The main
construction will be continuous
ribs covered by three quarter
inch plywood surfacing and top
ped with galvanized steel for
roofing and siding.
The building will stand on a
large cement foundation. There
will be a second story over the
main floor and this can be used
for offices or sleeping quarters.
Assistance Sought
Walsh said anyone interested
in donating financial assistance,
material or labor toward the
camp may contact him or the
Medford Jaycees by writing to
post office box 251, Medford.
The Jaycee summer camp will
be available for use to all youth
groups and especially underpriv
iledged children who have no
other camping facilities. The
camp will be offered for use dur
ing this summer on a weekly
basis so week ends will be open
for construction crews.

one day a week for two years,
a pupil has acquired an indus
trial specialty and is prepared,
if he wishes, to get a permanent
job in the factory after gradua
tion. (
Last December the ministry of
secondary education called a
meeting to discuss the results of
the first three months of the ex
periment. It was attended"iby
some of the assisting factory
workers as well as by the regu
lar school teachers.
Their discussion indicated that
the experiment is working fairly
well. However, it also has raised
some problems, including the
fundamental one of the aims of
secondary education.
Even before the experiment
started, the 10-year school pro
gram was considered by many
Russians to be too heavy a load
for children. Those in the upper
grades have six and seven hours
of classes a day plus several more
of homework, so the entire
school day often stretches to 10
or 11 hours.
Now, in order to fit in the in
creased technical training and
not overburden the children still
more, some of the experimental
schools have decreased the num
ber of hours devoted to standard
subjects such as literature, his
tory, languages, and math. The
teachers are beginning to depend
on the extracurricular "volun
tary circles" to make up for the
loss of time in these subjects.
This tendency to undercut the
traditional academic- education
was pointed up in the discussion
as a serious problem. It was em
phasized that, after all, the fun
damental task of the secondary
program is to provide all-'round
education and not just to turn
out locksmiths or welders.
Some of the. delegates at the
meeting suggested that a solu
tion might be to add an eleventh
year onto the school program
given over entirely to technical
training. This would not only
provide more such training than
the existing program does, but
would make it possible for the
Soviet secondary school to grad
uate 18 and 19-year-olds who are
prepared to begin 8 job iromed
